Does anyone here have a Radeon 9600? We have them in our machines at work and I can't get Q2 to look right. It looks like it is running in software mode or something. However, it looks great in UT2004 and Q3. Any thoughts? Is this a known issue?

I've heard all ATI cards have some trouble with quake II, and that they often require a bit of tweakage to get looking right, while I cant address your problem head-on, I suggest looking through the Troubleshooting section, and read a bit in there, many people have posted with ATI problems.. luckily I dont get this problem: 3dfx Voodoo III 16MB.

ati cards have driver issues, there cards dont work right for alot of people and in alot of games
they dont make um as good as nvidia

Anyway, I have a Radeon X800GTO (clocked and pipes opened to be identical to an X850XT), and I have no problems at all with Q2. My framerates are significantly lower than my old 6800, but they're still 350+ or so with timerefresh (6800 was 800-1000), so it's not an issue.

My friend just got an ati 9550 and it plays Quake2 horribly in GL mode. HE gets faster FPS in software mode. He has 2.6ghz P4, but he says warcraft plays very smoothly now, so at least it did what he wanted it to do, fix warcraft!

I bought a Radeon 9600 se card for 40 bucks off my friend, because I wanted a better card than my Geforce 3 Pure, obviously after installing it, my Q2 played worse and slower than what my Gf3 did. So I figured its garbage, and sold it off on craigslist.com for 100 bucks. (fortuately the guy who bought it, wanted it for its dual monitor capabilities)

Lesson Learned: Stick with NVIDIA!

Here is something I forgot to add in my reply :

default opengl driver = set gl_driver "opengl32"
sync every frame = set gl_finish "0"

You can also add these lines in your config.

ATI is fine and dandy in other games, but for some reason (maybe intentional or not), Nvidia stuff generally does a LOT better, or has a lot higher framerates, with the Quake & Doom series (or anything made by iD).
