Directed by... Angelina Jolie? Eh, go figure, a movie with cambodian kids in it, of course.

It's about a what happened to a family, particularly one 5 year old girl, during the post-Cambodian Civil War period when Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia and began the Cambodian genocide under Pol Pot. It's pretty interesting that all the rhetoric the shithead communist Khmer Rouge are using in the movie is the same kinda shit being pushed today by critical race theory and social justice activism. Being that Angelina Jolie is one of the hollywood elite, I wonder if she is FOR or AGAINST all the collectivist rhetoric being bandied about these days, which is clearly what makes the villains in this movie seem so cold and cruel.

Pretty decent movie though. Angelina Jolie did a good job directing and producing it. 8/10.

Had it on my To-Watch list on Netflix for a few months. Finally got to it. Eehhhh. Pretty underwhelming, man. Maybe the proliferation of virtue signaling has conditioned me to view everything now with a skeptical and biased magnifying glass. But the whole side-story of the female Indigenous woman Sokanon fighting to free other women from the oppression of dirty men... seems like a ploy to play to the modern feminist movements. And meanwhile the whole show is about the fur trade in the early American-Canadian frontier. And isn't fur murder? They obviously show NO ONE trapping animals, and with the exception of a brief scene early in season 1, no one is really depicted skinning any animals.

It's not the worst acting, but it isn't good either. The writing feels really shitty, with all the different characters having story arcs that put the characters in potential conflict with each other, a la Game of Thrones kinda shit, and it's what EVERY fucking tv show is doing now, and it this point it doesn't make the show more complicated and unpredictable and dramatic and suspenseful, etc etc... It just makes it tired and unimaginative. I imagine a room full of suits going over the script, making a conscious effort to rewrite the screenplay to make it be this way. Fucking fuckwits. They aren't artists and by meddling in such things and basing story decisions on focus groups and statistics, they make a screenplay, a work of art, FUCKING SUCK.

One of the characters, a crazy Scotsman prone to violence, is CLEARLY stolen from Braveheart.

From season 1 to season 2, they suddenly change two characters to make them gay. Another change issued by the suits in the marketing dept no doubt. It added NOTHING to the story other than making it less believable in the context of TRUE history as we know it.

Long story short / TLDR:
It ain't horrible. But it ain't "good" either. At the end of it, I almost feel betrayed by how below mediocre it was. 3 seasons, 6 episodes each, about 50mins per episode. I kinda want that time back. Who do I need to see about a refund?

And according to this, there shall be no season 4! OH NO! Whatever shall I do!

Too bad for Jason Mamoa. I really like him, he seems like a really swell and normal kinda dude in real life. And he ain't the best actor, but sometimes they put him in good roles.

Started watching Ozark on Netflix last night. Finished season 1 episode 2 this morning so far and it's pretty good. Not surprising though. Pretty much anything with Laura Linney in it is always good. She was great in John Adams and The Life of David Gale. Finally something that doesn't suck!

Okay. So is this what we're gonna do every year? Just up the price a dollar every year? What's fuckin' changed so much that it requires an 8% total increase in funds to sustain it? It's one of two things: mismanagement or just plain old dont-give-a-fuck-about-you greed.

It'd be one thing if I was paying netflix 14 or 15 bucks a month and getting a VAST library of pretty much anything I could think of watching no matter how obscure and unpopular. I could always find something to watch then. But that's not really what you get with ANY of these streaming services. You get... some shit. A portion of select shit, some limitations apply, void where prohibited, see website for details, batteries not included. And if you want other shit, you gotta pay another 15 bucks for the other streaming service.

I'm already paying 200 bucks a month for fucking satellite service. What the fuck, man!

Being John Malkovich.

I'd give it about an 8 out of 10, but I'll say that other people might not agree with that assessment of this movie. This is a strange one. Either you appreciate these kinds of odd and unique movies and scripts, or you don't.

Saw it back in 99 or somewhere thereabouts when it came out on home video and I rented it. Watched it again tonight on netflix. It's pretty strange and weird, but has a couple of really funny parts. John Cusack finds a hidden doorway in a wall behind a file cabinet at work. Whoever goes into it gets sucked into John Malkovich's consciousness for 15 minutes before being spat out miles away in a ditch beside the New Jersey Turnpike. What happens when John Malkovich goes through John Malkovich's portal?

Me and Quadz once had a small off-topic talk in a cesspool'd Spawngirl thread about an old actor named Harry Dean Stanton. He was born in 1926, and his acting career spanned from 1954 until his death in 2017. He was almost always a supporting actor.

To quote the cesspool'd thread...

I forget what that dudes name is, but I'm pretty sure he's been acting since before movies were in color, and he's still acting. He's been one of those "that guy" actors for pretty much his whole career.

His best movie? The somehow-not-Oscar-nominated Steven Seagal classic Fire Down Below, hands down.

But real talk... I actually kinda like that movie. Steven Seagal and Kris Kristoferson are both awful, but for some reason they don't completely ruin that movie for me.

Aw. I didn't hear about that. That sucks, he was cool ole dude. I knew he was old as fuck though. 204 acting credits since 1954. I was thinking he started acting back in the 40's though, but I guess not. I do remember the times he played on the old westerns Have Gun Will Travel and Bonanza because my grandpa used to watch reruns of those all the time. Cool Hand Luke, Kellys Heroes, apparently he had a small part in the Godfather II (I can't remember his scene even though Ive seen that movie a bazillion times.) Dunno why I wanted to think he had a part in To Kill a Mockingbird, but that must be Robert Duvall I'm thinking of, I dunno.

Probably the best part of Fire Down Below is Harry's song during the closing credits.

I dunno if he ever recorded any albums, but he was always a pretty good mountain/folk/gospel kinda musician. He could play guitar and harmonica and I believe mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, and autoharp too.

Anyway... tonight I was thumbing through the stuff on the Tubi streaming app and came across a Harry Dean Stanton movie from 2017 called Lucky with him in the leading role.

He died at age 91 about 6 months after this was released. Really good movie, though. To kinda quote the synopsis from Tubi, it's about an old man coming to terms with his own mortality. Well written though, the story is kinda philosophical without ever being up it's own ass. The perfect movie for Harry to have done at that time, and he was the perfect guy for the role. If that's gonna be the last movie you make at age 90+, that's a career and legacy you can be proud of.

Really good movie though. One of my new favorite movies. It's leaving from Tubi soon, so if you wanna see it there, hurry the hell up.

And speaking of him singing, he also sings a mariachi ballad in the movie entirely in spanish. Dude was talented.

(I was gonna post the trailer, but it's probably better if you see it without seeing the trailer first. Bob Odenkirk plays a bad ass action star, and the trailer kinda spoils the fun of seeing that unfold so unexpectedly as you watch the movie.)

Pretty good movie. IMDB has it as 7.5/10. I'd agree with that, or maybe even an 8 or 8.5 from me. If you like Better Call Saul, this movie kinda has that vibe to it. A pretty visceral hard-hitting shoot-em-up action movie. Lots of bullets, lots of bones crunching, and... a kitty-cat bracelet.

Finally got around to downloading the 6th/final season of Silicon Valley. It's a half-decent kinda funny 30 min HBO series about a fictional computer tech startup. It's not wall to wall funny, but it has its moments.

Also finally got around to downloading both parts of season 6 of Vikings. I decided to rewatch the whole series from season 1. I got about 5 episodes into season 1 before I remembered that all the episodes I had were the History channel US broadcast versions... so I deleted all of seasons 1 through 5 and redownloaded the uncensored "extended" versions. I thought most of the stuff edited out was nudity, but there's actually LOTS of little pieces all over the place that were cut out, also some kind of important plot points too, like where Lagertha and Aslaug are BOTH in bed with Ragnar.

TURN - Washington's Spies on Netflix.

For someone who liked John Adams on HBO, this depicts the other side of the story. It's all based on a true story too. After watching it I researched the story and I was blown away from the historical accuracy.

Fully recommend. This is up there with Outlander and expanse for our favorite series we've ever watched.
