Hello. Searching for R1Q2?
« on: March 27, 2017, 01:46:16 AM »
Hello all  ;)

I have Quake II already installed in my computer.
Where can I get the R1Q2 client?
Do I need something more to play the game in Tastyspleen servers?
Thank you in advance

I'm not sure if it's still the case with the very latest R1Q2 updated version, but one of the updated versions of R1Q2 in particular had some kinda bug with it where you couldn't play single player anymore and many users opted to revert back to the previous version. I'm pretty sure this is the version (7904) that people were using.

http://ir.tastyspleen.net/files/r1q2_7904.zip

You can try updating it with the updater exe and see what happens. If I recall correctly, there was ANOTHER version released that might've fixed whatever those issues were. Just drop the updater into the same Quake2 folder, run it from there, and it should overwrite the older one. If you update and have any issues, you can always just delete the newly updated r1q2, redownload the 7904 again, drop it in and go.

You can find R1Q2 Version b8012 on this site: https://github.com/tastyspleen/r1q2-tsmod/releases
But I think R1Q2 is kinda outdated these days and most people use Q2Pro client.

What clients do others recommend?

I use R1Q2. As far as I know, most of the graphics in Q2pro are pretty much the same compared to R1Q2. Most of the time, the only thing different clients will give you might be different lighting and shadows, different rocket projectile trails, railgun trails, blaster trails, etc. If you want the game to look more hi-resolution, clients like R1Q2 and Q2pro both support the use of PNG images for textures, and you can add hi-res map texture paks to your game.

This is kinda the official R1Q2 hi-res textures pak. I use it myself.

http://r-1.ch/z6_32bitclr_png_allmaps.7z

I also always use an additional brightskins pak for player models (|iR|Focalor's Camo Brightskins Pak
|iR|Focalor's Camo Brightskins Pak) and a "custom" pak with different sounds, HUD numbers, menus, weapon/item models, etc. I've made several over the years. Currently I'm using my latest one (Focalor's Pak v10
Focalor's Pak v10) that I made 2 or 3 years ago. But I have them all posted on my Tastyspleen page, and with the exception of the earliest ones, I have download pages for each one with lots of pictures showing all the items in them. Even if you don't want to use them, it might be worthwhile to take a look at them anyway just to see what kinds of customizations are possible in case you might want to make your own custom pak.

http://focalor.tastyspleen.net/pakfiles.html

There are other options for Q2 clients out there though. Not all of them work with anti-cheat though. EGL is a pretty neat looking one that I've used a couple of times. But if you're not using a pretty beefy video card, it might not perform so well in multiplayer with many of the graphics options maxed out. And honestly, I wouldn't even know where to find it anymore.

There's some Russian dude I met over on the Q1 forums that's apparently got his own fancy new client. He added some of the remapped and reskinned items I made for my v10 Pak to his official client package. I think it's called Q2xp.

What clients do others recommend?

This link is to the source code repositories and cannot be used to build client binaries that support the anticheat DLL. Only R1ch had the ability to build them since it used special code to obfuscate the anticheat techniques in use. These source code archives can be used to build perfectly suitable servers, however.

Unfortunately, R1ch has dropped all support for r1q2 on his web site and the r1q2updater is non-functional. Many links to R1ch's original r1ch.net site supporting r1q2 are now 404'd.

I don't know if Tastyspleen is keeping an archive of the old binaries. I looked for them but all I found was an old b7387 version.

It would be nice if r1ch would pass the baton to someone who could continue to maintain the client but I don't think that's going to happen.

I'm attaching a b8012 fully functional client and anticheat.dll as published by r1ch to this post to make it available here. Perhaps quadz will copy it into the clients archive in the downloads collection.

If you have installed Quake2 from the CD as the full game and not the demo you can play single player in r1q2. Simply explore to the quake2 directory where you should have placed the r1q2 executable file and double-click that executable. It will launch but probably won't start the single-player scenes at launch. To launch the first SP map simply hit Esc, then enter the Game menu and launch the difficulty level as you would from the original Quake2.exe.

No, you don't need the Steam version. I don't have it and r1q2 works fine for me. There might be some problems with the cinematic features between map sections. If you are interested in the "authentic" Quake II user experience I recommend playing the single player version with the original quake2.exe rather than any other client since those clients are oriented toward enhanced multiplayer experience.

Thank you very much.
Apparently I can't play single player with R1Q2, but it's okay.

Thanks all for the info!

I personally use the 7904 build of R1Q2 and I can play single player with it, although as QwazyWabbit mentioned, using any version of R1Q2 won't play those .CIN cutscenes between each section of maps. If you want to see those between the sections, you'll want to use the quake2.exe instead of R1Q2, AND... it might be easier to create 2 distinct installations of Q2, one with R1Q2/R1gl and all your multiplayer stuff, and another with NOTHING except the original game files from the CD. Thing is... if you tweak your Q2 config settings for online play with R1Q2, then start playing with the quake2.exe in solo mode, it might overwrite all your R1Q2 settings, or might not "feel" comfortable using your R1Q2 settings if it DOESN'T overwrite it. Both clients feel a liitle different, and its best to maintain CFGs for use with each one.

Anyway, as I posted earlier, a copy of R1Q2 build 7904 which works with single player can be found here:
