New interview with "Thresh"
« on: September 04, 2015, 01:31:38 PM »
Thorin, esports writer and historian just did an interview with the legendary Quake and Q2 champion Thresh. I'm just linking the interview here in case anyone missed it:

Thresh: "Yeah I pretty much gave birth to the whole WSAD key configuration thing for FPS gaming."

 :dohdohdoh:

Yep. And I saw bigfoot sodomizing a leprechaun with a magic genie lamp.

Haha, I'm sorry to say it was worse than WASD for me. I stood behind Thresh in 1997 at E3 and was dumbfounded at his ability to do insta-180's with the mouse.

I recall speculating to a co-worker: Thresh must have some key-binding that allows him to press an instant-180 (look behind.) But yeah, it was just a flick of the mouse. Totally new concept to me at the time. :(

Thresh - calls himself 'oldsckool gamer' and not known by players now!  Imagine!   :P

Some players here think I'm Thresh in disguise as 'bean$' - easy to make that mistake cos I'm soooo good  ::)

You are good even if i had Thresh q2.cfg back in 1998 only what used from it :( is m_pitch 0.017 and s_mixahead "0.14"

Just 'stuck' with m2 +fwd,  ctrl jump, arrows left, back, right so i was 'able' to 'become' 'amazing' jumper : ;)
When ppl ask me why i have dumb movement binds i defend myself 'explaining' 'how smart im' using both side of brain just for movement  :P

Hi,

I used to practice the jumps on the Edge - hours and hours of my life - no way I could do even a tenth of the trick jumps - rockets jumps up and down (jumping from the bottom back to the top) were amazing etc.  :headbang:   Not just circle and strafe jumping in the Mega room, some seemed just impossible!  And this was with the old style graphics.   :WTF:

Hmm

Even with my weird cfg with Quake2 recommended video card Voodoo2 and CPU Pentium MMX 233mhz i could jump normal edge jumps (Thresh had in that time P2-400mhz and 2 Voodoo2 in SLI)

Played with same CPU and video card 1998-2004 on DialUp  :P

All this new video card, mouse and high definition glow-boy player gameplay - it's just cheating!       Play the game like it was made: hard-core proper - no mouse just a keyboard, 150mhz PC (max), small mono CRT monitor, dial-up and software mode. Standing up too, cos chairs are for weaklings.   :nana:  Party like it's 1997     :headbang:

Joking apart - I remember purchasing my 1st Voodoo card (quite an outlay at the time for me) and then installing it in my PC.  Wow, major difference in graphics   ;D  - never again would I play in Software Mode!  :humm: Then came a better monitor, sound card and finally (I think I've got the year right) in late 1997 / early 1998 internet access (Janet Server) - I was getting 5 to 10 ping compared to the average of about 120+.  Another major jump - from Strogg killing to multiplayer against humans - Catch the Chicken, Jail Break, Admin for Barry's World, (sometime later) Gloom and so many servers on GameSpy.  Great times ...   :-*

So long ago - I can't remember the change with the patch - probably advised by the Clan Members I was in.  However, patching Q2 was my first experience of updating games that needed correction  :rocketright:  Obviously, to play it now V. 3.2 is required.  :miffed:

It was a patch for the actual game/client. All of the jumps you see now, you could easily do 15 years ago.
