Why can't you have both?  I don't know what kinda budget you're working with or what kinda price line you've come to, but there are all KINDS of boats listed on craigslist for not a whole lot at all and with winter approaching, boat prices will be plummeting.  Then again, I do live only 10 mins away from Lake St. Clair so everyone and their mom has a boat in my area so they are easy to find for steals.  Get yourself a decent boat then go buy your hotroad and put more money towards the car than the boat imo.  Problem solved  :ban:

I'm 30 minutes from a lake and 1hr from the ocean. New boat prices are outrageous. The boat pictured is close to $200,000 new. That's nuts. If I go the boat route, will probably get something a few years old. There is a big boat show in Atlantic City the end of this month. gonna check that out.

I never had a motorcycle. Always wanted a Harley. Just afraid I would kill my self on one. Lots of deer in my area. And the main thing I would do on one is go bar hopping. :-)

Well I wouldn't recommend bar hopping on a motorcycle, especially if you haven't ridden very long. I wouldn't recommend bar hopping in a car either though. No one needs the headache of a DUI, and it's amazingly easy to get slapped with one when you aren't even what you would personally consider to be "drunk". One or two 12 ounce Miller's, and then you catch the attention of a cop for going 6 miles over the speed limit or for slipping through a yellow light or having one headlight or taillight out, and they decide to pull you over... they're gonna come up and ask you questions, and based on how they think you react to them (like "Have you been drinking?"), they're gonna ask you to take a roadside breath test. BAM, you're in cuffs and on the way to jail. You lose your license for a year, you get 3 or 4 grand in fines, one year of probation, 40 hours community service, your insurance goes up or cancels you, etc etc.

Take it from someone who knows. Do yourself a big favor and don't even go there. A couple of beers for an hour or two one night in your life ain't worth the 12 months of bullshit afterwards.

But if someones gonna do it anyway, STAY SMART. Check your headlights and taillights before getting on the road. Make sure your tag is current. Always use your blinkers to signal turns and merges. DO THE SPEED LIMIT AT ALL TIMES. Maintain your lane properly at all times. A cop will usually need a reason to pull you over. DON'T GIVE HIM ONE.

Lots of cyclists and deer where I live.  9 times out of 10, a cycle crash isn't due to deer, it's due to a stupid driver.  An old farmer gave me a tip on avoid deer once and I've only ever had two deer collisions in 13 years, both minor: don't slam on the breaks, gas or swerve unless you're going to hit them.  If they're standing still, they're curious about you.  They'll panic and run if your car makes a sudden change in noise.

Haha! My roommate hit a deer on a motorcycle several years back. Only HE could manage something that fucked up.

He's a mechanic of all sorts, but mainly he works on Harley Davidsons. The place he was working at at the time sold Harley Davidsons and Buells. His old lady was supposed to come pick him up after work that night but she had some kinda meeting or class at the hospital she worked at, so she couldn't pick him up. Instead of calling someone else to give him a ride, he "borrowed" one of the Buells from the showroom. Well he ended up buzzsawing a buck in half doing 60. Amazingly, he was only scraped up kinda bad and bruised when he landed in the ditch on the side of the road, and not one single broken bone. The Buell, however, was obliterated into a billion pieces. He was fired the next day. They tried to sue him for the cost of the bike for years, but his lawyer got it tied up so long that eventually the store changed ownership and the new owner didn't pursue it further. :D

summer home in the woods, because you aren't rich until you have a fucking summer home

LOL, I just sold the summer home. That's where the money is coming from for this. Couldn't handle 2 money pits. I do need to look into the maintenance costs for the boat.

TBH, if you have a ton of money right now, the best thing would be to invest it.  If it's a very sizable lump sum, you can put that in interest-earning accounts and, depending on how much money you have, you can earn anywhere from 7%-25%.  Not sure about the interest-gaining cycle, as some are yearly, bi-yearly, quarterly, etc., but I imagine you have at least 100k, and I'm sure you could get a 10% gaining account on that if you invest.  10% on 100k will get you $10,000 in a single year.

I'm having fun with math today apparently.  ;p  Just figured how long it would take to make 100k @ 10% double; turns out it's ~7.27 years, or 7 years, 3 months and a week.  Hey, I remembered something in math.  rofl

Anyway, just something to consider.   :afro:

hehehe feel free to move this to "The Man Thread". I AM leaning towards the boat. After the Atlantic City Boat Show on 9/28 I will need to discuss boats. Thinking about something around 29ft with a head, can pull 2 skiers and sleeps 1 man 3 women. :-)

Anyway, just something to consider.   :afro:

Your being too sensible. I am curious though. What would you suggest I invest in that's safe, that will get you 10%. Retirement is only a few years away, so can't afford to loose it in the stock market.

If you really wanna know my recommendation, I'd recommend getting a low-risk portfolio set up.  Basically, you get companies who have been here for eons in your portfolio, so you can get guaranteed gains in that fashion as well.  Of course, since it's the stock market, and since those companies have been here for so long, you probably won't see HUGE jumps in stocks.  Take Walmart for example:  it will continue to grow, there is no doubt about it (it's the world's largest company); but since it's so huge as it is, you probably aren't going to see that stock go up 50% in one year.  Lower-risk portfolios are actually designed to do smaller residual gains for people that are like you now (thinking about retirement), and want just some extra money to be able to enjoy life on.

Pretty much a lot of investing is really just a hedge against inflation, but to see the true gains, you'd have to go higher risk, which is where you could see the 7%-25% I was mentioning.  But I guess I was talking from my stance.  I'm 30, so I can take bigger risks, because if I lose out, I still got a while to get it back.  In your situation, high-risk probably isn't the best plan.

I will tell you this though.  If you have 100k to invest in, even with low-risk, you could probably still see 5% a year.  It's not unheard of for low-risk to see some decent returns, especially if you go in and "tweak" it from time to time, ex.:  You hear about Apple releasing the new version of iPad so you get some shares in a few months before it hits when stock prices are lower, and you can get a little boost to your account.

These are all just ideas, though, and I do NOT claim to be an expert on this kind of stuff.  I'd recommend talking with a banker or a stock broker if you can find one; they won't steer you wrong.  They like making money, and are usually more than willing to help others make some too.  :>

Just need a plank or a yardarm.  ;D Just thought of another problem. I get sea sick. It needs to have some sort of stabilizer system.  :mrdead:

If you're going the boat route, then get yourself a tri hull(I have that and mine's a bow rider, but still havent taken it outta storage this year since it's so god damn expensive to put a boat in anymore and keep it docked somewhere.)  But I'm almost the same way, just after awhile of the boat swaying and especially if you have people with you constantly standing or whatnot(kids are a pain with this and them having a short attention span) and it makes the boat constantly bob on each side, the tri hull prevents the boat from swaying/bobbin' very well.  People can stand up and as long as they aren't standing up quickly or being a dick to make the boat sway on purpose, it'll almost be like you're on solid ground and the boat will barely move about.  The tri hull cuts through waves soooo much better than a V boat as well too, a much smoother ride in shitty conditions.  But ya if you have a place to store the fucker in the winter time(NOT outside) then get the boat and make sure it's the tri hull and you'll be nice and stable in the water on that puppy :).  Addin a couple pics for reference and I'm sure you can google stuff up yourself as you're a big boy to look further into things etc:

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
