best alternate q2.exe

I know there are compatable executables that could make Quake2 look less like a symphony of browns.So what  is the best and where cans I gets it,Preciousss?

i prefer aprq2.  It looks better then stock when set up right.  i'll send you my config if you wish. 

It isnt very mod friendly.  i cant even use it at all for ra2. :/

The BEST looking client i have ever laid eyes on is Echon EGL.  i use an older version.  i use 1.7.  It doesnt give great FPS though.  was fine for play more or less though.

EGL indeed has some neat features,  the gore is intense. BLOOD EVERYWHERE!!  nice lookin rails too.
smoke trails, bullet holes...    might just have been my rig at the time,  but too much going on for net play.

might have to have another look at it though.

If yer looking for a neat apearance,  I like the way you can turn off the colored lights in q2a, r_coloredlights 0
(I think) you get the same colors as you would in software mode.  Deff a nice change.

Yeah, EGL definately 'updates' quake2's visuals, the water looks more realistic, better lighting effects, nice gory blood spray, Smoke trails from nades and rockets definately look alot better.  Rail trail is a bit better, but I could of done without it, and would of had a sweeter version of the original rail trail. Also the bullet holes are niice, they also help you to see what went on in certain areas, along with helping you know what potential weapons are waiting around corners, and campers also, the bullet holes tell a story of their own! New high quality sounds and textures also. All in all, I'd recommend it to anyone with a high-end PC.

I still use nocheat since it supports .loc files and has cl_coloredlightmaps to fix the yellow color on dm1.

Here's q2max.  I have never tried it, but my brother had it on his computer for a little while.  It looked pretty cool.

why on earth wouldnt you use the current version gator?   which can be found at a new website http://egl.quakedev.com/
the newest version is supposed to be out this weekend

egl is my client of choice, it supports alot of r1q2 features. so its a great alternative
the new weapon effects to kinda get in the way more then the vanilla ones, but iv used them so much. that i cant the old ones anymore heh
egl really is packed with alot more features the alot of the other clients around

r1q2 just didnt cut it for me, the developer doesnt seem to be very interested in furthering it

i would think so, but probably not all that much my system has been pretty much overkill for quake2 since iv been using it heh
heck i even run AAx8 and AFx16 with it LOL now that slows it down, but not so much that im lagging all the time
