I think the main issue is that AC is required on many servers nowadays, so the Win8 issue is a quite annoying one for that reason.  Someone seriously needs to contact R1CH about this issue for a rebuild, OR someone really good at coding (maybe quadz? ) should help the community out and do a rebuild themselves.

We can rebuild r1q2. We have the technology. But when we rebuild it, AC will detect it as a modified client (as it must, for anticheat to make any sense at all.)

Then what it's going to really take is a new system again, if R1CH has completely lost interest.  Someone is going to have to completely rehaul the entire system and make a new "r1q2" and new "AC" to go along with it.  That does suck, but a lot of people are on Win8 now, and I'm hearing nothing but grief on this issue, which sucks because as old as it is, Q2 is still a worthwhile game to play.

How worthwhile it is can be proven by the players who are on it now.  There's a complete newb on the servers under the name "SysAdmin", which is a great thing seeing how old this game is.  Dude can barely move and shoot at the same time.  In the old days, everyone would groan, but nowadays, it almost brings a tear to my eye that Q2 is alive enough to have someone brand new connect and try the game out.  We need more people like that.

My only sadness is that I don't know coding.  If I did, I'd dedicate tons of time to the idea of a complete overhaul.  Otherwise, I fear that Q2's days are sadly numbered.

anticheat is a first line of defense against casual cheaters.

As an admin I definitely find AC useful!

But Q2 can survive without it. It means going back to more players recording demos and more admins reviewing demos, but we did it before as a community. We can do it again if necessary...

I'd say running anything by Apple or *nix for games is retarted but there the people are...

Why is that? It's exceedingly common for OpenGL performance on Linux to vastly exceed that of Windows -- for both AMD and NVidia. Look it up. Steam has been available on OS X for over a year, and in beta for Ubuntu for as long. Works great.

But alas, I don't run any OS for games. I run Lion because I'm a software professional. I run games on it because it can.

My c was very rusty (frankly poor) and I didn't know the OpenGL API at all when I started working on Quetoo / Quake2World.

Not knowing how to do something isn't by itself an excuse for not taking action.

Well damn. For the most part, even though I hate Win8, Q2 is the only reason why I'm using Win7 atm. :*(

7 was not a bad OS, for Windows. If I had to run Windows, I would still be on 7 and not 8 as well. My comments re: XP were not directed at you

Yeah, as far as Windows goes I think its best releases were 7, XP and 2000. Dual-booting Win7 and Linux though spending more time in Linux nowadays since 64-bit Win7 won't run many games that 32-bit Win7 will. Blah.

I'm not sure what the future of AC is going to be, but things are looking fairly good as far as a new client goes (Q2PRO), there's just not many people giving it a chance yet.

q2pro is not new client just skuller continued to work on it (ty skuller) and (ty Elysium for info)

today q2pro http://skuller.net/q2pro/nightly/q2pro-client_win32_x86.zip is smoothest q2client i ever played (ofc winXP and nvidia 6600 :p)

If q2pro supports AC with Win8 and I make a customizable hud (with it) with capabilities similar to QL or QW, then I'd play on that client. Until then, it will be R1Q2 till the end!

The HD3000 and HD4000 chipsets on the Intel Core series are totally sufficient for casual gaming.

No, like Quake4, CoD:MW3, Battlefield3.. If I were building a new rig today, I would probably skip a discrete GPU and just use the integrated stuff. The most demanding games I play are OpenGL 2 and DX9, heh.
