good idea, ok, if everyones cool with it, it will be officially named the 'Tasty 500' and of course have 500 frags limit.

Sounds fun.  Thanks for making this happen!

1) Suggest there be a "semi-private" IP used for the server.  If you use one of the standard DM servers it might get too full (blaster battles) or overfilled where someone cometiting can't rejoin if accidentally disconnected.  Problem is, that if you limit it to 12 players, then who gets in which set of 12 players?  Maybe random seeding.

2) Personally, I like the idea of playing q2dm1-8.  Perhaps each to 125 frags = 1000 frags.  Might be done in less than two hours.  If you play one map, 500 frags sounds good.  It will be fun to process the server log for stats -- I've got a pretty interesting tool I'd like to apply to it.

3) Might want to set a policy on camping.  It is important to have a rule even if the rule is that there isn't one. 
  • spawn camping -- standing at a spawn simply waiting for frags.  I don't think this is a problem unless there are too many players, because a good player will outscore someone doing this.  In general, should be discouraged.
  • room camping -- hanging out somewhere you have a terrain advantage and typically there is only one narrow angle people enter and attack.  (rail on q2dm1, top of the RA lift on q2dm2, rail on q2dm4, etc..).  I think people are split on wheter this is bad.  I think it is bad because it makes the game less fun and can degrade the quality of everyone's play in reaction to it.  In general should be discouraged.
  • camping in plain sight -- hanging out on the upper ring on q2dm1 with the rail picking people off.  I think this is perfectly fine and is only "camping" in that you aren't moving around much.
  • cycling items -- such as timing the RA on q2dm7 so you always get it.  A good player knows in their head when 20 second has passed (down to the second), but some people complian in frustration.  I think this is part of the game.

4) As punk mentioned, need to decide settings: weap respawn, quad, invuln, and powershield/powerscreen.   Your tourney, your rules.

5) Pick a time or maybe suggest some times/days as a poll.

6) If Elysium, Ax2grind, DEMOn, Ghost9, Punk, Dolphin, Gator, and others I'm forgetting are the competition this is going to be unlike any FFA game in in TS history.

Or maybe even do q2dm1-dm8, or at least some of the more preferred maps, since that's classic DM/FFA right there, I think in most people's view, and everybody knows where the weapons are on those maps, so no real advantages to be had there for anybody. 

How about q2dm18.bsp ?    :evilalien:

(If anyone isn't familiar with that one by name, it's q2dm1 and q2dm8 combined into one map... Can be mymap'd on mutant if you wanna check it out.)

yes, q2dm18 would be a perfect map.

i'd prefer to see it stick to one map.  It makes the drag race to the end much more intensive.

i'd also still like to see 1,000 as i think it will be a true mental test for all.  i myself can play for several hours straight, but that is with countless map changes.  And even then i definately lose my edge after about two hours.  That much time on ONE map with no breaks whatsoever will be brutal mentally.

There are several dm-combo maps.  i have a dm1 + dm8 map(q2dm18), a dm1 + dm3 map (dont recall name) and a dm1 + ztn2dm3 map (dont recall name).  dm18 is definately the biggest of them and is unique in that it has the most power ups.  It has two megas, three yellow armors, one red armor, and a power shield on stock settings(or maybe three megas, i dont recall if the mega spawns on the dm8 powerup area.).

I'd say we kick this thing off big, then make a weekly meeting of it. :)  Have a Tasty500 on a weekly basis, but have BIG ones every so often.  And being a NASCAR fan, you are supposed to start off the year with the SUPER BOWL. :)

Q2DM18 is the best map for this. I think we should have a timelimt set at 500 frags, and then take a break (a day or two) and continue same map timelimit 500 frags, the winner is the winner of the totaly frags.  I think this should be hosted on a Saturday, any other day I doubt most people can play for 4 hours strait!

Just some quick opinions, very changeable.

Some of these stipulations can be taken loosely, and are more recommendations to adhere to when playing.

-Weapon(s) will stay
-Chaingun and Rocket Ammo will be made sparse if possible, if not, we will atleast remove the chaingun.
-You cannot use just one weapon, you must atleast switch to different weapon every 20 frags or so.  Alternating is unacceptable, you must atleast use 2 different weapons before you return to the first
-No powerups of any kind.
-If possible, armor will be made to stay, so everyone has atleast the chance to get some. (maybe not)
-Server will be setup on a anonymous port, of which only the competitors will be told.  This is to keep unwanted people out.
-The max clients will be set only as high as how many have signed up, and a little more to allow ref's/admin's so we can watch the game.
-Demos of the entire game will be required to be taken from match start to finish by each player. These demo's must be sent to me immediately after the game ends and will be uploaded to the demo's section for all to see, after being reviewed.

Camping Policy:
---------------
The only camping not allowed is hiding and waiting for people to pass by, and of course, spawn camping.  It may be hard to keep track of, but for every spawn rape you do, even if on accident, will deduct 2pts from your total score.  Room camping will be acceptable, but if the person is hanging around there for more than a minute or two, you will also have 10pts decucted from your score.

NOTE: Deducting points may not work, as if this person reaches 500 first, these point degrades will have to be taken into consideration.  Possibly the person will be kicked and allowed to return to the game, but losing their entire score for that map, if there is more than one map.
This will only be enacted under extreme situations.

Gator: yes, I plan on having a tourney like this once a month or so..I just want to see how this turns out.  But I doubt it will be for prizes then, just like 'Player Of The Month' or something.  It may take us a couple of Tasty 500's to actually configure everything to everyones liking.

What the... ???????  Just an opinion, i.e. as a player not as an admin, but this seems maybe over-engineered a bit.  :)  "Let quake2 be quake2" I always say.  (OK it's the first time I've said that, but as of now, it's what I always say. ;) )

Interesting idea... At present we don't have the ability to make armor stay like weapons.  Just armor on/off.

Something like that would be fine.  Probably a password-protected server.

The servers have spawn-protect shields already... we could adjust the timing on that if needed?

help me out here console!  hehe.  good ideas though.  I just know alot of people get frustrated and defiant requested a camping policy.  I'd wish we could spawn without weapons(blaster), and the person could be protected until they are able to pick up a weapon.  But a 2-3 sec spawn protect would be nice.  The reason why I am biased against the chaingun is because of how fast it kills.  And if we have ammo stay, it might make it too easy.  Password protection would suffice.    I guess your right though, let quake 2 be what it is.  Gotta simplify everything.

Yeah, definitely not trying to be negative; I think this tourney is a splendiferous idea  !    :bananaw00t:

Currently none of our existing mods has anything like "ammo stay" or "armor stay", that I know of.  I don't know if there are other mods with those options?

Just brainstorming, how would "ammo stay" work?  Everytime you run over some ammo you... get some?  Or you don't get any if you already have some?  If you stand on top the ammo and fire the weapon, do you effectively get infinite ammo as long as you stand there? 

I guess "ammo stay" would have to remember each player picking up each ammo entity.  So for an individual player, you could only pick up a given ammo entity once every 30 secs anyway, but everyone else could too, independently.  (But you'd probably want some visual cue whether you were allowed to pick up the ammo or not... Seems like a hard option to make work properly (same with armor stay.))

But maybe it's been done before?  Just rambling.........

Anyway unless someone has more info about a mod that implements ammo/armor stay, it's probably safe to say we wouldn't have those options.

Hehe, have to agree with console on this one, some of the ideas have good intention, but is virtually impossible to implement very well. If someone camping for instance a spawnspot always will win, there is something wrong with the map, not the settings/rules. If the players are good, they will play q2 as effective as they can. Use default ffa settings with weapon stay and inf ammo off and see how it turns out. I'm more intrested in seeing how people rack up maximum amount of frags within the standard rules of q2, than seeing how they can do the same with weird forced settings :)

I remember reading how Dimmo plays ffa somewhere, and it was pretty much simple tactics like camp rail on dm1, camp rl on dm2, rail by dm3, bfg on dm4, ssg on dm7 etc, each map had it's strong key area to get frags when 16+ players were playing.



My idea for a good ffa map would be q2dm8 with powershiled disabled (mega+red armor spawning would be nice though, if possible). It's a classic q2 ffa map, and seen quite a few FFA competitions held on that map. I dunno, also depends on number of players playing.


Anyway great idea. I suggested holding FFA tournies a while back instead of tdm since this is a FFA based community, but nothing happened back then. Hoping to see some good demos from the top fragger ;)

Rail and Rocket launcher atleast require some form of skill on aiming...even a person with less than mediocre skills with a chaingun, with unlimited ammo, can take out loads of people.  I dont care much for the powerups, because not everyone knows where they are at on every map...and Ive seen some people use them continuously through out whole maps, essentially giving them a HUGE edge over other players.  definately forced spawning should be off.  I know at some point in time everyone will need to make a 'pit stop'  ;)

you can probably gues who's who by how they play...and If i were playing I go 'muahaha' alot, so Id give myself away..hehe

is there a way we could incorporate all of the weapons from all the mods into one game?  probably not.

maybe for now, we should just have classic FFA, weapons stay, and let them fight over the ammo.  500 fraglimit, map of everyones choosing, and whatever weapons people want/dont want.  if not, we will have every single wepon we can possibly make available.

Camping allowed. This is stupid if you think you can enforce no camping.  For everyone that camps theres always someone who kills the camper.
Allow 2 seconds of invurnability upon spawning, if you shoot a weapon during this time your invurnabilty disappears.  This will ensure nobody can camp at the spawn spot.
Timelimit 0
Fraglimit 500 (or 1000)
If you disconnect, you can rejoin but your frag count will restart at 0.

This how I think it should be.
