Q2 NA 2v2 tourney - Sign-ups now open
« on: May 14, 2012, 12:37:44 PM »
Sign-ups are now open!

MAPS: q2dm1, q2dm3, ztn2dm3, bloodrun, torment
SERVERS: NADL, KFKC, DFIL, DFLA, TOURNEY4

RULES:

The referee present will flip a coin to determine which team picks the first map to play. This map will be played then the other team will counterpick with their map choice. It's a best of 3, and if it comes to the 3rd map then each team will ban one of the 3 maps remaining. The team who won the coin flip will ban first. The team who lost the coin flip will then have 2 maps to choose from and will ban one. The last map remaining will be played to finish the set.

-timelimit: 15 minutes
-powerups: ON
-timers: NOT ALLOWED
-Double-elimination bracket, 8 teams(possibly more)
-R1Q2 with anticheat is required. You can get R1CH's anticheat module here: http://antiche.at. You can also get quake2 with multiplayer capabilities, r1q2/r1gl, and anticheat(everything you need to participate) by installing the q2starter package through following the steps here: http://q2s.tastyspleen.net/
-You also must idle in IRC on enterthegame.net, #nadl so we can organize the matches properly!!

This is a weekend cup and will take place on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of June! I'll have the bracket up thursday May 31st and will allow letting people play their first matches that night if both teams are ready and agree(especially of it's an opportune time to cast it, as well).

Scheduling should be semi-flexible / easy, but you do have to be readily available for this weekend. It's really important for you to be around friday so we can actually start the tournament.. then we'll keep playing and see how far we get. I am capping the sign-ups at 8 teams as of now, by discretion I could extend it to 12, or even 16 though.

Referees: haunted, claire, Erica, [BTF]Misery

If you wish to sign-up your team, please do so in this format:

teamname(for style points)
player 1, player 2
"I understand and agree to the rules."

If you're looking for a teammate, post in this thread here: http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=15205.0

Additionally, this event will be casted live by QL commentator wonko and our very own [BTF]Jehar. Good luck to all who participate.

Prize pay-outs::

1. 60%
2. 30%
3. 10%

Also, the 2 teams(4 players) tying for 5th will get mouse pads sent to them. I'll update the total money in the prize pool as I organize with those donating in the next few days.

Sign-ups:
1. Chief + barton
2. slugsk!e + kickr0
3. adrenal1ne + haunted
4. man!pulat0r + flesh
5.
6.
7.

"Glad to see all the interest...(and the interest in possible donations).

pretty sure it's going to be a 5 map list, each team throws away one, then the remaining 3 will be the ones you play, if it goes to 3 maps that is..(stage striking/map bans). The person who bans first, will get to choose the first map played. Then the other team gets to counterpick with one of the remaining two... whomever wins the coinflip will decide if they want to ban first or not(you can make the other team do so if not).

the only shoe-ins so far are dm1 and ztn2dm3......after that, likely dm3. so we'll determine the other 2-3 from ppl's input and polls probably. "

I liked these rules better, each team gets to throw a map out. Then a coin toss for who picks first map.

Also, why wouldn't tourney and tourney 2 be on the possible servers list?

Idk why I said that primarily flesh, I definitely meant each team picks their own map, then stage striking/bans happen... it's how all 2v2 tournaments have been done, including the last one I did and in europe. This way is without a doubt more fair; it actually makes balance between the team who picks the first map to be played and the counterpicking team.

Example: team1 wins the coinflip, names a map as the first map to be played. Team 2 afterward win or lose, can counterpick with any of the remaining 4 maps.. Assuming team 2 wins their counterpick, then team 1 bans one of the remaining 3 maps, and team 2 gets to choose the deciding map out of 2 who are left over....

The entire map list will also be utilized better, opposed to the same one's getting banned most of the time... and it's simply just a lot more fair no matter the set count, whether a 2:0 or a 2:1 that had to go to the 3rd map.

tourney and tourney2 are in the same location as NADL man, same server with a different port. I specified nadl because it's the main server for competitive q2 in the US... There's also a different admin pw set there then the other tourney servers, for the main purpose of me being able to give it out to event/league refs. Anyway.. aside from there being 0 difference between tourney/tourney2 and NADL, I don't think we're going to need more than 1 server per location.

Hope that cleared it up for ya little. When teams are able to ban right off the start, it's opens many possibilities for unfairness. Lets say team 1 is better than team 2, team1 being very exceptional on 1 map, and team 2 who is bad on half of them, average on about half. Team 2 bans team 1's best map, and team 1 just bans whatever. Why should team 2's ban be more valuable when they are the worse team? What if team 2 gets lucky and wins the 2nd map somehow, then out of some more luck wins the coin flip afterward? With the current rules, the coinflip in the beginning isn't as randomized because the counterpick(s) actually balance out the coin flip win...

I think flesh is getting at the fact that we might need to use those other servers, since himself and others have experienced packet loss on one port but not the other. It hasn't happened enough to be a real problem and I doubt it will be one when it comes time to play the matches.

I'd prefer though NADL since it has AC enforced though.

I don't think that's too plausible...

If someone was experiencing PL, then it's really unlikely that it was port-specific:

"generally there should be no difference in packetloss between varying ports on the same hardware... it would take some router along the way performing port-specific prioritization rules.. which would be weird for uncommon ports like 27930 vs. 27990"

..past quote from console, confirms what I already thought to begin with.

If y'all have any evidence demonstrating otherwise then take some screenshots the next time you see obvious PL on one server that's in TX, opposed to another(ex: tourney2 v. NADL)... but just know, it's not something that normally happens or is supposed to happen(if it really IS happening.. shed some light on it for everyone).

Side note: we have a whole bevvy of dedicated tournament server ports in Dallas and New York - see the "ts-tournamentXX" servers at the bottom of the list here:

http://tastyspleen.net/quake/servers/list.cgi

So those are available if needed (they're just sitting there idle otherwise.)

Awesome quadz, I hadn't checked up on those servers in awhile(in fact, rumor had it from most that those servers were down). I'll definitely put them to good use and amend the server list where applicable(all except dfil/dfla).

..People were just speaking of the inconvenience of playing on tourney4 for EDL matches opposed to the ts-tournament servers that are "down" but had the play function enabled(timers allowed in edl..).

It was tourney vs tourney2 but I can't say much about it or with any conviction because it didn't happen to me. It was just really a thought more than anything.
