Is FOV / widescreen considered cheating?

Sorry for the dumb question. It's been a while. My beloved Sony G400 crapped out on me some time ago. I am finally getting around to deal with it (I'm a busy guy), and well....pretty much only thing available are widescreens. I cannot STAND a stretched display, so I grabbed q2Pro, and set it up to my liking.
Anyway, I am so bad at Quake2 I can use all the help I can get (seriously, when u see me play, you will think WTF), but I have read on the web somewhere that some consider increased FOV cheating...
What is the consensus here?
Thanks,
-Alan

increased fov is standard for quake in general, many cpm players play with the max the cpma mod supports (130) but overall in q2/q3/ql youll see the average being around 100-115
i personally use a 16:10 monitor with 110 fov... lot of old schoolers will still rock crt monitors with the 100 or 90 fov though
also, q2pro is kinda cool, but i would suggest running r1q2 with anticheat, it just seems a bit more polished.... not to mention q2pro doesnt support http redirect for game asset downloading, where r1q2 does
if ya dont know that that means, just imagine downloading stuff 30x faster when ya connect to a server rather than having that very slow download speed...

Hmmm, thanks for the info and tip on R1Q2. I did have AprQ2 (I think it was called) on my old laptop, but it was a slideshow on the new laptop (old lappy ATI, new Intel integrated-Should have handled it fine, don't know what was up with it), but maybe R1Q2 will behave on this thing.

bright skins are also standard for every quake, just incase you end up wondering if tahts a cheat too... q2 just happens to be the only quake without a nice way of implementing bright skins
pak file generally does the trick though...

there is probably a thread that's searchable on here that explains setting up fullscreen with a widescreen monitor, just in case you can't find a resolution that works well with the new setup.

r1gl supports wide screen resolutions (most not all) natively, so no need to do custom res strings when ya can just set the appropriate gl_mode

i run an eyefinity triple monitor setup
using a fov of 150 makes it appear as 'normal looking' to me versus the fish-eye appearance sum1 running a fov of 150 on a single monitor would experience
is it an advantage in-game? prob anyone without a similar setup would be at a slight disadvantage i suppose
but it is nothng to worry about as I pretty much suck at quake 2 now lol

the advantage is negligible between better players, its not about what you can see

Now that we're on the topic... I set up the 1920x1080 on my config file, but I can't get this little thing to get out. And on my config it says fullscreen.
How do I get it to fullscreen and take these icons out?
btw: This is on the original config
set gl_driver "opengl32"
set gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
set gl_texturealphamode "default"
set gl_texturesolidmode "default"
But on my autoexec file it says r1gl for gl_driver

Add this to your config if you haven't already: vid_ref "r1gl"

did you see if you could set it from the menu? and then find out the gl_mode that the menu sets and put that in your config instead?
