The only thing I really care about is if this is going to jack up the price of the food, if so, I will take my food less humanely raised.

I think we should all become vegetarians, that way no animals get hurt.  But then, what about the plants, they are living things also.  Oh the dilemma

No. My species did not fight and murder its way to the top of the food chain so that I could eat nothing but plants. In fact, it's probably MORE cruel to eat plants. They are living. They are systematically farmed just like animals. And unlike animals, they can't run away from me when I come after them with a knife. And if one of my squash bushes ever got up and started running, it'd sure make gardening a hell of a lot more interesting.

If chickens aren't penned up, how to do you contain & collect the eggs?  Sure, a couple chickens could be easy to handle but hundreds would be impossible.

Pigs I can understand, you can still just kill & pick them up but chickens will lay eggs everywhere if they're not contained.

I have a cousin who is in the egg business and he recently setup a farm for cage free eggs.  The chickens have bedding areas to lay there eggs and they have areas to walk around.
This a far more expensive way to do this because the square footage required is a lot more.  Sometime I will need to talk with him about this to see what other issues it causes, maybe manual egg collection.
The way they have been doing it has the water, feed, egg collection all automated.  He has over a million chickens in houses connected to the plant.

Whilst I have NO problem at all with eating meat, I do think "kosher" beef is a little cruel and unusual, especially since it's not done for any health reason. Basically they do it... because some book of stories written a long long time ago says some spirit person in the clouds wants it done that way. They take the cow, place hooks into it's nostrils, then proceed to lift the fucking thing off it's front legs and suspend it while some rabbi cuts its throat with a big knife, and lets it choke to death on it's own blood. Ah religion... it tortures humans both physically and psychologically... and even the little harmless animals aren't safe from its horrid tendencies.

Slitting the animals through is a common way to kill something (you decapitate chickens & turkeys).  Many hunters I know do that if the first shot didn't kill the dear.    It's also the best way to get the blood out.  If it's done right it's no less effective then shooting or electrocuting the animal.

Never heard of anyone lifting it by the nostrils though.   Not sure where that came from.  Kosher is, in general, done for a health reason.  It's to make sure the meat is "perfect".  Beef we buy could of been from a sick animal, kosher beef pretty much guaranties it isn't.  A good majority of things today are kosher (you can't use the kosher food symbol w/o having an inspected plant though) anyway.

My animal rights lawyer cousin gets me pretty fired up on this topic...AGAINST animals.  The dumb bitch tried to tell me killing flies is inhumane because they are alive.  I'm having a fruit fly infestation right now...she actually suggested I capture and release them, not knowing that releasing them would merely have them run right back inside, not to mention the ones I can't capture would still be swarming inside.  Fucking stupid bitch.

when I bird hunt, first thing I do when picking them up is either wring their neck, or literally rip their little head right off with my bare hands and toss it in the bushes.

I prefer the second method as it allows for easily bleeding them out: you just turn em upside down after and let it pour out of their neck.

all told, for cows, the most efficient and painless method seems to be walking them into a killing chute where they either drive a steel piston thru their skull with air pressure or hit them with a mechanical sledge hammer right on the noggin. I don't think they stand a chance of not dying with either method, and it's quite quick.

1. I hope you feel sympathy toward animals, as we are primates.

2. There's no evidence of intent in nature, thus the use of 'meant to' in this context is inappropriate.

3. Given that we ourselves are animals, it would seem our compassion toward our numerous cousins should scale based on the capacity for an organism to experience suffering, which we generally assume to be related to the complexity of that organism and its posession (or lack) of a nervous system, etc.


Presumably an instantaneous transition from life -> non-life would imply an absense of suffering in that transition. 

For anything less than an instantaneous transition, point #3 should be considered.

I like bacon and eggs.

I always wanna swith to a vegan diet (for health reasons) but Im too lazy to do some more research and IDK but being vegan seems to be more heavy on the pocket.

As far as "health" goes, it's debatable whether or not being strictly vegan is the most healthy of all possible diets. Unless I'm mistaken, there a few nutrients which are vital for a well-balanced healthy diet which cannot be attained from anything other than meat.

And like quadz mentioned, being that I'm atheist, I don't think there's any reason to say meat was "meant" to be eaten lest I claim that someone in particular designed it to be that way. What it "is" can be talked about plenty though, and what I think it "is" is DELICIOUS! It provides lots of protein and tons of other things, which is GOOD. Being that the animal has never done me any wrong, I have no need to make it suffer for anything. So whatever means gets the job done the quickest and the cheapest is obviously the best. Quite frankly, it's the whole truth that the way most meat is obtained these days is a whole lot more humane than how another animal in nature would obtain it from the animal becoming food. Honestly... how bad would it suck to be a gazelle with a gimpy leg getting your ass and neck chewed to death by 3 or 4 lions? How bad would it suck to be an elk calf being mauled by 8 wolves. Also, seems a lot less stressful of a life for an animal that doesn't roam far and wide in order to find food. They get daily food delivery and a shelter for free.
