Indeed; although coincidentally having read the essay Free Will by Sam Harris last week, my brain is still grappling with the arguments presented therein, that not only is free will an illusion, but the illusion of free will is itself an illusion.

And yet, as one reader summarizes in the comments, "one of the primary assertions of the book...: the lack of free will in a metaphysical sense doesn't invalidate the concept of choice, whether conscious or unconscious, in a legal or even neurological sense."

So the statement above, "man has no control, even over his own will", would change into something more subtle and bizarre: "the popular concept of free will is neurologically incoherent, the felt sense of free will is an illusion, and yet our brains still make choices based on the state of their contents and sensory inputs."
