Hmm... Well, i play more quake1 now because of ezquake and its ease of use. What if we make soething like ezquake for quake2?
And...The autoexec.cfg for q2kicker should be fixed to the normal gaming standards, scroll to change weapons, space to jump etc.
What if we link a "I want you to play quake2!" picture on the ts.net firstpage? and maybe have a FAQ which explains the what's and why's of the game?

Maybe we can even get id software and steam to ship q2 with r1q2(read: EXAMPLE!) so that newfags wont think:
"This game is acting all retarded because my pc is too new for this old game! I'll go play cod..."

Happy friar mentioned a complete graphics  overhaul, i personally think that that would make the game look likkewannabe-cod, but what if we have an ezquake option like: Fast graphics,Eycandy,normal, High eyecandy?
Archievements sounds good, what about avig a exp system like Zdaemon? That will also make some people stay longer!

Q2 is kind of dead, etc. etc., small things can still happen though. Either of these seem plausible:

1v1 ladder, 8 team 2v2 tourney, or ffa mini comp.

I don't want to read game manuals either, but this is Q2, once they get in the game and have some comfortable settings, the gameplay consists of picking up a weapon and shooting other people. As far as getting raped, that's a common theme in just about every FPS. I'm willing to bet I'd get raped by trying whatever new FPS there is because there's a lot of experienced people who keep moving on to newer games so it's not like you'd ever find a place without them (I still get raped in TDM on this game though ). You may be right about a plain deathmatch game ever becoming popular again, but I still think Q2 has the best FFA / DM experience which has been pretty much killed off in newer games.

Yes, in every FPS a new player will get whooped, however with games like COD and Halo, the player size is so huge that the newbies stick to themselves and can play each other and have fun. You can't do that in Q2, or even worst, QW. In those games, veterans (if not in skill, time spent playing) are the only active players left. I think that's one of this game's hugest hurdles when trying to attract new players.

I also think though that Q2 aside from QW/Q1 is the best FFA game out of all time!

I was never around before QL, but I'm sure that Q2 was dead way before QL came out. Definitely though, QL took what was left of all the players from the different Quake games. What's worst is who knows if those same players will come back to Q2 when QL inevitably gets it's plug pulled.

The only problem I see with trying to completely update Q2's graphics is that these projects tend to get to a point where they don't want to maintain compatibility with existing clients / servers anymore. When the client basically becomes a separate game I feel that it just creates another division in the playerbase (or it fails to attract players at all).

I'm not talking about making it a completely different game, I'm talking about making the models higher res, updating the skins, weapons, etc.  Berserker does a nice graphics system overhaul that's compatible with stock Q2.  Just git it some better shadow/light support and it's no different then Q3A's renderer.  Heck, just take Q3A's renderer & use Q2's netcode, that might be compatible with Q2 servers & nicer looking graphics.

game would have to be the same to keep what's good, keeping it simple.  nicer textures and what not and configurable graph improvements would be perfect.  just need army of programmers : )

Adding a mouse cursor & interactivity to the menu would make it sooooooooo much more accessible imho.

Not sure it's worth trying to get new blood to play Q2. I would think it would be better to try and focus on getting people who used to play a lot of Q2 back. Surely there's a huge pool of former Q2 players out there. Probably a good chunk of people who don't even know about Tastyspleen...

i hear shit about people not konwing q2 is still active enough to get games all the time when i mention i love quake2 in quakelive

always like "damn i loved ra2..." or "people still play that? cool" or "there is still servers? maybe ill give it a go"

but it doesnt seem to go anywhere as i guess they forget about it or have trouble finding a client it just doesnt have the same set up ease that quakelive does, and thats its downfall...

there was that quake2live project that was in the works, wonder what happened to it lol

I just went in search of Berserker's client and tried it out since I hadn't heard of it before. After trying to read a translated page, and downloading some 180MB .rar, I loaded it up and got an awesome 30-40 FPS. I tried connecting to a server and got an endless cycle of connection attempts. I then uninstalled it.

You have to tell it to use Q2's network protocol. 

See, that's the issue new players have: if you're not even willing to try out a new client and learn how to use it and you already play the Q2, why should new people be willing to go through more effort then install on Steam and hit the "play" button to be in the game?

When Q2 came out it wasn't any harder to run but there were tens of thousands of players.  You had to type "connect" in the the console, or you had to use GameSpy to fing servers.  You had to manually download and install patches, mods, maps, etc.  You had to setup your mouse to use.  Etc..  No goto.  No r1q2 client.  No 3D acceleration for most.  People still played because it was new and bought it because it looked great.  Same reason the new CoD always sells well and is played a lot: it's new and looks great.
