Operation: "QUAKE2ALIVE"!

Ok...Since this game is starting to rot in hell like all other old games we have to do something!
Squad, i present you operation quake2alive:
Will have a own website With leagues and server info, if you push the forum button you will be redirected to TS forum(if ok!)

Will host servers, arrange leagues worldwide etc.

And another idea is: what if we make a q2 onlinemod for zd and st?
But i would liek to ask: "would ayone help me out with starting this? "

there's many players that would love to get started if they knew how to get that installer, and where to go from there with goto.  trying to get an old game working to be fucked with usually isn't super pleasant.

what does it take to do that??  my first thoughts would be some kind of advertisting, and a larger link for "getting started", with simple content, like get Elysium's or Jehar's kicker, goto these servers, come here for help.

I think a more visible link for a getting started type of page would help. I attached an image of the one they have over at quakeworld.nu for an example.

As far as advertising goes, I'm not really sure what would be the easiest / most effective way to go about it. The only thing I can think of is in trying to spread the word about Q2 on other popular gaming forums.

And, uhm, we should maybe make a Ezq2 client so that ppl wont have to fuck up everytthing, then rip their q2 cd in half of anger?

Also, i got the idea for making quake 2 popular! We Hack into everyones coputer and makes it so that it shows a picutre of "START PLAYING QUAKE2!!!!11111" on the screen every 10th second, just like coca cola did in old cinemas! Brainwash <3

well... the legality really is a blurry line on that ya know...

and honestly, the best thing quake2 could get, is some publicity, and events backing said publicity

the problem though is big duel tourneys or little duel cups, or tdm tourneys, dont get any turn out :/ no one has the drive to go to the players, contact them personally, and make sure they will play... or to advertise it enough and make organizing teams easy enough to even get a roster up

ir500 does well, but its like... a month or more of hype for a 40 minute game... maybe something like an ir300 hat trick event where it goes for 3 maps would do better get it advertised, help people set up quake2, let them practice on railz and such...

also, quakelive had some ffa comps going on that were pretty cool, something similar for quake2 would be cool considering a lot of players like the ffa side giving mutant a boost would help too as people get bored with the dm maps and vanilla maps...

duel cups might work but it would really take a lot of prodding at players to get their damn matches finished in a day or two, cause a league obviously just grinds to a halt :/

a 2v2 cup would probably work out best... maybe even 2v2 insta...

we just need some driving force behind everything, and everyone ends up busy and shit so if osmething is going to go down, it has to adhere to a strict schedule, and get done in a day or two

There's nothing you can do. Deathmatch games don't appeal to the new generation of FPS players, most of which are either CS players or have only played shooters on consoles like Halo. They also tend to have short attention spans, lack patience, and require instant gratification, none of which deathmatch games will most likely supply them. 

Reaching out to other Quake players probably wouldn't be much helpful, either. Most of them seem to me unwilling to play any other Quake games that they don't play.

there is a steep and seemingly infinite learning curve to the game, and jumping someone right into it with people that have been playing for 10 years is hard.  anything to make it easier for them is good.

I think on the link to the kickers and getting started, it might be good to show a couple youtube videos of things like daelmun's shuper jumps and frags, nookie's jumps, or top matches.  just so people get that wow factor, because that's a driving factor for many people - wow that's amazing, especially once you start playing and realize how difficult that is.

The short attention span and lack of patience you mention is more likely to show up when someone is actually trying install and configure the game rather than when they're playing it. BTW, instant gratification is why I love this game, I can go from being at my desktop to being in-game in about 3 seconds. I don't know of any modern FPS that can do this.

By instant gratification, I mean that people wanna hop in the game without really reading the game manual, get a couple of frags and kick ass. They don't wanna get raped by good players for months or years before they actually start to get good enough to win games. That's why I don't think another deathmatch game will ever sell well again. At least a PC one.

If we want new players in to Quake 2 then we should do a complete graphical overhaul so it LOOKS news.   Modify the DM/CTF/TDM mod that allows health handicaps to also include achievements of some sort for doing certain things (I find DN4E's MP achievements kids fun), have it reported on a website for bragging rights, then you'll get people to stay for the achievements and people will stay longer for the fun of the game.  Throw in "Fighting Fire with Fire" in this (if's a lot of fun imho), maybe a CoD style game mode (call it "Real Match" or something) and you'll have something for everyone, for free.  Throw it all up on the WallyFly network, add some menu functionality to r1q2 so instead of typing "goto" it's run via a menu, add mouse curser support to the Q2 menu, then you've got something that's pretty much a little better then modern games.

couldnt you write a little program that would be able to essentially connect to an empty wallfly server as a spectator with no gui for the quake engine itself, and do the goto stuff for you?

have a button that says refresh list, and that would just pm a goto to wallfly in your command line only quake client in the background, give you server list for the goto network, have each entry for a server double click-able so you double click and it will launch your other quake2 client, close the current connection, and connect to the server for you

wait... wouldnt even have to be that complicated, could just use the list on the tastyspleen site (which is updated faster anyway) lol yeah that wouldnt be hard at all
