Hey all,
I thought I might piggyback on this older thread as I am having issues getting booted off Whale's Eye, and it was recommended that I check in with you guys for technical assistance.

I'm on Mac and have been using the Fruitz of Dojo client for several years. There were some new maps around Christmas and I kept overflowing and getting the boot---2-3 times per round. Now that those maps have cycled out, I am still getting booted. Tried altering config file---nada. Very weird. I wanted to try another client so I downloaded AprQ2 raw files as well as Macports and Xcode and thought maybe rebuilding my install would fix it. The problem: I am not an IT whiz and have no idea what I'm doing.  I read through this thread but it's all Greek to me. :help:

Any advice or suggestions on how to remedy this situation (short of going to Windows)?

I would really appreciate it...I miss getting my frag on...

Hi, maybe you already know this but Yamagi-Q2 is another Mac client: yquake2
"Yamagi Quake II is full 64 bit clean, so it works perfectly on modern 64 bit processors and operating systems. Yamagi Quake II is supported on FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, OpenBSD and Windows (XP or higher)."

Nicotine has never been addictive to me, whatsoever, no matter how many years I've smoked or how many I smoke a day.

Yea, Yamagi is a great vanilla Q2 experience. If you're able to compile my AprQ2 port, you should also be able to compile Q2Pro from source as well. I have a slightly dated fork of it on Github that compiles and runs on Mac:

Jay,
I had to repurchase the mac version of q2 and it took me three tries since ebay knuckleheads kept sending me the windows version. Your directions, while likely helpful to some, are pretty confusing to me. Can you provide additional guidance? Please see below

1. Create your Quake2 directory. [I did this in terminal but it doesn't look like it created a directory. Am I doing something wrong? do i need to add something to the string?]
  mkdir -p ~/.quake2/baseq2

2. Install the Quake2 game data [can't I just copy from the disc and from the extracted 3.20 to the baseq2 folder? Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know how this step works. do I change "path" to the path of where the files to be copied are located?]
  cp /path/to/pak*.pak ~/.quake2/baseq2

3. Compile AprQ2 [same as above. Do I make "path" the location of the aprq2 files?]
  cd /path/to/aprq2/trunk
  make -j3

4. Install the binaries [do i need to do anything else here?]
  install bin/aq2 ~/.quake2
  install bin/game.so ~/.quake2/baseq2

5. Install the optional game data (recommended)
  svn export --force data ~/.quake2

6. Start the game [am i going to have to start the game from terminal every time?]
  cd ~/.quake2
  ./aq2

Jay-

Just a bump of appreciation.  I am finally getting ready to move away from XP, and for various reasons I am so done with Windows.  I'm making the move to Linux, and looking forward to it.  Right after my work related needed packages are installed, Q2 is priority #1.  Going to be a steep learning curve, but I will get there.  Have stuck my big toe in the linux pool a number of times, but now I'm ready to jump in.

Anyway, thanks again for all your hard work!

Sure thing! It's been my pleasure to provide AprQ2 for the Mac and Linux community over the last few years. Tho, I have to say that at this point, my fork is hardly the best option going. When you're ready to tackle Q2 on Linux, I would absolutely look at Q2Pro and Yamagi first. Still, if I can be of any help in getting those going, you can find me in #tastyspleen.

I'm getting ready to try Q2 on Linux. Bought an Acer c720 Chromebook and I'm running Xubuntu with xfce off a USB 3.0 using a tool called crouton that creates a Chroot Environment. People are running Steam on the c720 and playing games like TF2 with decent frame rates, so I'm sure Q2 will work.

Anything I should be looking out for with Xubuntu and xfce? Anyone running that combo with Q2?

Love this thing btw. Chrome OS is fast and easy if you're already using Google products. If you don't use Gmail and Chrome browser as your default, don't bother with it.

It's got USB ports, SSD card slot, hdmi out, bluetooth, as well as being light, portable, and easy to hook up to standard peripherals. And since it's dead simple to add a full running Linux instance, you also have a full blown OS to develop on...ssh, ftp, vim, Sublime Text, etc. Chrome OS and Linux run side by side when you do this to, so it's just a matter of a few key strokes to switch back and forth.

I only wish I had found a new c710, or decent refurbished. Bought a refurb c710 on ebay and it was basically DOA. With the c710, you can upgrade the ram to 16 GB and put in a much bigger SSD than the 16 GB SSD that comes stock. The c720 I have has 2 GB ram, which is soldered on the board, and the SSD is upgradeable but it's one of those card type SSD drives.

Just curious, any reason why?  I have been using the AprQ2 version on my XP machines for a long time, and I have been very happy with it.

It looks like Yamagi will fit the bill for my needs too, though.  The main reason I used AprQ2 under windows was:

1)  Widesceen support
2)  Single player support.  IIRC, I tried R1Q2 since that seems to be the standard, but IIRC single player was broke.
