It wouldn't take much to make this "mod". Restrict the weapons and maybe spawn players with rocket launcher in hand.

I guess that was the obvious name for it, because that's what I already set up.

Basically I just cloned the railz server, substituted railgun --> rocket launcher.

i am all for the idea of this server, however after playing on it, in my opinion it needs some tweaking.

What we have now is this:
Spawn unlimited rockets, 100 armor, railz maps, mostly open maps, few walls, obstructions.

What we get:
unlimited spam, about three hits to die, very little emphasis on footwork, movement, just hold the button down and aim at where you think they will land two or three times.  The maps dont lend well in my opinion to rocket fights either.  It is wide open, just aim at areas of large activity and spam away until you are forced into a fight locally.
What i do not like about this, is the current server settings in my opinion just lend to spammy fighting, with no emphasis on strategy, cool shots, or movement.

What i propose:
Spawn with no armor(perhaps armor spawns where they normally do on maps, and that would add some strategy right there.) Spawn with 15 or 20 rockets max.  You better think about pulling that trigger and wasting a shot.  You will need to kill to get more ammo.  A different map list that is more rocket oriented.  Rockets are about SPLASH DAMAGE!  Hallways, walls, corners.  Not open maps, and often single plane fighting.

i am not sure if the current railz mod will support this, as far as allowing armor on the maps.  OSP Tourney will do this just fine, but i know Quadz' opinion on OSP Tourney.    Perhaps Open TDM will support it, but i have zero experience with it.

Thoughts and discussion please?

i have played around... 4-5 games on this mod, today and yesterday total, and it's fun. I am not sure I like the red armor exactly concerning how points are scored, but nevertheless it's fun. That's why ra2 has their point system..... Couldn't help but think how I would have won more marginally the times I played for 2 reasons a) the damage I dealt without leading to a kill would have tremendously affected my score if accounted for and b) if points are scored by damage dealt I would think that things would get less spammy. That's just what I was thinking while playing, but I am also all for what the majority wants / I have fun with it already.

I think there's a few railz maps that could be taken out of the rotation and a few ra2 maps that could be added.

@Gator, just read your post. Yeah, similar gripes to mine. The armor IS the problem... but it becomes not a problem but a good thing even if splash damage / all damage dealt is accounted for. I am unsure as to how hard it would be to incorporate a point system similar to ra2's, though.

There are 2 old maps that were specifically made for rocket launchers. They are:

rocket2u
rockit2

Essentially the same maps with different textures. They both have a cage in which you might spawn into, and would quickly get annihilated by torrents of rockets from everyone outside the cage. It was a fun map.

Yeah that was the second version. In normal Quake mode there would be a railgun and grenade launcher in the cage to give you a bit of a fighting chance. Also invul if I remember. Those would be gone in a rocket-only server I guess.

1. needs better maps... some of the railz maps work... majority dont :/

2. needs some creative point system because the way it stands right now, all the noobs just spam rckets and steal the kills out from under the good players who are actually aiming and doing the majority of damage :/

maybe make it so only direct rockets do damage or something? idk how that would play out...

the mod is really fun with just a few people... but over 4 it just turns into a noob spam fest :/
