I'm don't disagree with what you listed, but if 3.20 works perfectly fine and I am happy with it why should I add extra programs.

3.20 has worked bug free since day 1.  I don't have to make exceptions to my antivirus or turn antivirus off when I play.  I just fire up and play.

I've dealt with some nonsense comments in the past about "pretending to be on a Mac," or when I happened to be railing particularly well, people automatically go to the aclist! or versions! to see who is running AC.  I went 7 years without playing the game because I could never find a copy for Mac to begin with, and when I finally found this fruitzofdojo port, I was thrilled because I could finally play.  Depending on how you look at it, people jumping to the AC list could be taken as a compliment or an insult, and if I could reasonably run an AC client I would, but I'm not going to go to the trouble of purchasing/downloading Windows to double boot just to run an AC client.

I'm not even allowed to play on your IRTDM servers because I get auto booted for not running AC.  I don't even know if there are bots or hacks that work on a Mac, and even if there were I have no interest in using them.  I play the game because it brings me a great deal of enjoyment.  Cheating would take the fun out of it because it wouldn't make me any better at the game.  I play to have fun and improve, not to win.  Winning adds to my overall experience but it's not my primary concern.  Players like slugskie take the game so seriously that they kick players for accidentally TKing, when there is an underlying humor in it.  It's a game, it's not that serious.

My computer is a little POS Mac Mini.  I paid $600 for it because my Powerbook from 2003 finally crapped out and I wanted a convenient means of retaining all of my information (transferred the entire user from one computer to the other).  As it is, my computer has it's limitations when playing the game, I can't imagine how shitty it would be to run Windows on the computer.  

I don't mean for this to be argumentative or anything, I just want you to understand my perspective (a mac user).

PS, can you grant me access to IRTDM?

You aren't specifically banned on IRTDM as far as I know, so you're probably caught in the forced ac of another player.
Depending on who they are, who you are behind that alias, and how variable their IP is, chances are slim that I'll grant an exception.
I don't use the ac token system that allows people to get by without it if their IP range is forced, because I really don't trust anyone not to hand out that token to others who have it forced, effectively allowing them a backdoor to get in without ac if they alias and are smart enough not to out themself. there are hundreds of people on my forced list, and I don't have the time in my day to make sure none of them are slipping by as aliases because of a backdoor that I could create for a select few.


My point regarding macs, is that you're already playing on an effectively pirated version of the game unless you bought full version q2 for pc and skimmed out all the resources to go with the fruitz of dojo client you're using on the mac.
that would cost about 50 bucks brand new, and maybe 10 now.

Getting something like xp running in a dual boot situation would not require an incredibly outlandish expenditure of funds, and you'd have more options in terms of the client you could use, not to mention all of the games and software that would become available to you.
For someone who's already playing a game they didn't buy, getting and using an OS they don't own shouldn't be much of a stretch. (piracy is not the only option: I've found oem copies of legit windows xp sp3 for 80 dollars inc. shipping)

I've seen higher bar tabs for a night on the town than the combined cost of both the OS and game.


all told, I expect people who play on my 2 servers to make some effort to be on a level playing field and if that requires that they invest some actual money or effort to play then so be it. there are other server options for insta tdm on the same box, and I invest both money and time to make sure that at the very least those 2 servers are as legit as possible when I log on to play.



Where I'm coming from is pretty simple: Most of the time I play I see maybe 3 people at a time (including me) playing with ac on other servers, and when I go on mine it's usually 95% or more of the people using it.

I could make it so that 100% of the players on IRTDM were using ac with a single command in the server config. Letting in the very few non-PC players already takes lots of time and effort to maintain, where forcing ac on everyone could be done in 15 seconds and a server restart.


I like the difference and I'm willing to go certain lengths to be fair about it, but I won't step on my own dick for the minority that is quite possibly not even playing a game they paid for.

you also have to wait ten minutes for maps to download and put up with the UGLIEST colored lights ever not to mention limited support for chat tokens for tdm binds and limited support for file types in paks

and those are just some of the basic most widely over looked benefits of using aprq2 or r1q2...

Faster downloads I can see as a plus, but there are not that many new maps these days.

I don't play tdm, so limited support for binds don't mean a whole alot to me.

I don't really play around with PAK files, from what I have seen about PAKS, if you don't watch it they can cause more problems than their worth.

Smoother and better looking maps would be a plus.

Maybe one day I will consider going with a client other than 3.20.

Vae, I use a Mac by choice with no PC.  In 2000, my parents bought me a PC...PIII 800 MHz if I remember correctly.  It started giving me serious problems after my freshman year of college, and then I started getting blue screens and had to boot in safe mode to even use it.  It was useless to me.  I went and bought an Apple Powerbook and that computer lasted me for 6 years until the screen finally failed on me.  It was less cost effective to get it fixed than it was to just outright buy a new computer.  I prefer the OS X interface to Windows, so I stuck with Apple.  I'm not a retarded scene kid nor am I a film student, I just use the computer for my basic needs - internet, Microsoft Office, playing this one computer game, music, photos, etc.  Windows is not more useful to me.  To each their own.  Who the fuck buys two computers when one suits their needs just fine?  I'm not made of money, I have a mortgage, car payments, bills, etc.  One computer suits me fine.

I would have bought Quake II for Mac if I could find it, but I couldn't.  I even bought it for Playstation to try to get my fix after so many years away from it.  Anyway, the name I play under is "Kapolsky."  I rarely alias, and when I do it's stupid names that I pick up from television shows/movies.  I had connection issues with tastyspleen that quadz resolved when I first got back into the game in October, old ip ban or something of that sort (just moved to NC in July of last year).  It's up to you if you want to grant me an exception, as much as a promise or my word is worth over the internet, I do not cheat nor will I ever cheat playing this game.  I'm happy that there is even a community that still plays it.  

The only places I play regularly are railz, dm and tourney4 with Reflex.  I don't know anybody else on this community, I've only been "active" on here since October (when I realized I could play this on a Mac).  I would appreciate it if I could play on IRTDM, because railing is my favorite thing to do.

So chalk it up to that then.  I am not a tech junkie, and I definitely don't have the prowess that half of the people on here do.  I have no idea what you guys are talking about most of the time with netcode and all that crap.  I don't know how to program, I don't know how to do most things that require an intermediate/advanced computer literacy. 

6 computers seems ridiculous, but as I said, to each their own.

plus you can just vote mode itdm on any opentdm server... no nades and it doesnt feel the same as the osp itdm servers, but its instagib teams in an instant and to switch it back you can vote mode tdm or vote mode 1v1

Don't confuse the surface-level GUI with the OS internals.  Windows is a horrible, inconsistent, inelegant mess internally, and always has been.

(There are occasional exceptions; for instance, I trust John Carmack implicitly when he remarked a few years ago that Microsoft finally managed to evolve a good API for Direct3D.)

But in terms of its core, Windows could not possibly better epitomize this Henry Spencer quote: "Those who don't understand UNIX are doomed to reinvent it, poorly."

i can guarantee some one using mac that had that many problems on windows is not going to take advantage of the solid bsd base....

hence, leaving it as a less useful much less productive computer with too many limitations for the less trained community that uses it...

even linux ends up more useful to new users these days, with all the package managers and crazy simple gui's a linux work station can by far be the most productive even for the computer illiterate, not to mention that linux is still more secure than mac with mac being one of the most targeted os's recently because of the arrogant attitude from apple, and windows just edges out over mac because of its support, the large majority of programs out there are made for windows

I started playing in 1998 when I was a 9th grader.  I used AOL Dialup or Netzero (got better ping with Netzero (200s)), and played in software mode, 320x240 window.  Eventually I got DSL and a VooDoo3, and played off and on until my PC died in 2003.  I was in a few unknown clans at different times, played a little q3a in a clan, I think I had a #1 ranking once on THECLQ for the Lithium mod.

The only players I have seen that I remember, and who remember me, are pepp5 and Optica.  I used to play with pepp5 all the time on a server called "inetarena."  Anyway, I had typed out a longer history but I accidentally deleted it (on my wife's work laptop) and I don't feel like retyping the whole thing.  

As for dueling and TDM, I feel like it's the best way to get better.  I know I still have a long ways to go, but I know I've definitely improved exponentially since I started (again) back in October.  

The best player I remember playing with back in the day was Ram{Xlr8}, not sure if that name rings a bell.  Some dude named mimetic played ra2 a lot, went to high school with me.
