"Camping," or playing smart/strategically for the mod?

To preface, I'm only speaking with respect to the FFA Railz mod, and no other type of game play.

Do you consider it "camping" to hang out (read this as patrol back and forth) in an area that keeps you less exposed, poking in and out of the main area and taking shots at people engaged in individual/group fights?  I'm not talking about sitting in front of a spawn pad, waiting for people at their most vulnerable, but finding a niche on the map that puts you at a low risk for death and a high probability of getting frags.

Is the "proper" way to play the mod to just run around and look for frags?  With one hit kills and unlimited ammo, it seems silly to just run to the center and let yourself get killed.  I was accused of "camping" earlier as I was strafing back and forth in a hallway and taking one shot towards the open arena and then removing myself from anyone's line of fire.  There are several maps that enable this behavior as a strategic way to easily and quickly get frags while dying less frequently.  I always thought that was the objective, trying to get to 40 frags as quickly as possible (avoiding just outright spawn camping).

Even spawn rape takes an accurate shot....but it gets called camping as well.  If I happen to be running past an area, and someone spawns, I will shoot them.  If they spawn again in the same spot, I shoot them again.  And again.  And again.  I am strafing the whole time watching the spawn pad, not crouching, but in constant movement.  Should I let that player run out and engage me in a fight, or is it not acceptable to engage him as soon as he spawns, understanding that he only spawns because he wanted to respawn, and he has a railgun off the pad? 

I personally think it's hilarious when people get spawn raped, even when I do.  If I respawn and respawn and respawn, and keep getting picked off just coming off the pad, I can't stop laughing, especially when it's by the same person.

Just curious to hear other people's input on this.

usually the only people worth complaining about in railz are the idiots that spam camp... spawn rape is different, acceptable but some idiots complain about it, and yeah there is strong areas on most maps you can stay and get a bunch of frags because you can see a bunch of spawn points and its harder to kill you.. height advantage and stuff...

each map has what i call a stronghold point like for example in q2dm8 the stronghold points are at the bottom of the stairs near the railgun, and where the shotgun is near the crates. some maps may have 2 or just one stronghold point, just depending on the map and spawnpad placements. it's ok to "scout" or "hover" around these points in the map, because most of the time it gives you control of the map. But when no one is comming your way u can either stand in the middle of the action or run around the map looking for frags. It's all in how you prefer to play. i play either way, either hover near the strong points of the map or just run around fraggin people. what i will not do is stand in front of a spawn pad the whole game, there is no point if u want to get better. what i hate is some stupid lame ass fag who squats or stands in front of one particular spawn pad the whole game.

comes down to map knowledge aswell. if you know areas where people will be, i head for those areas

Like Alpha said, most maps have their slow areas and their high action areas.  When I spawn, I head directly to the action area and live there as long as I can, die and repeat.  Occasionally I will meet another player along the way and we fight it out (I hate that when it happens because if it turns into a long rail dance, even if I get the frag I lost valuable time fighting a single target)

On the railz server, sometimes I do exactly what OP describes. Except every time I do, I call myself a camper. No one can do crap after you call yourself a camper. If they call me a camper, It will look akward in the chat. I mean, can you picture that?

I never have the patience to camp, but it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to do it. People do get pissed off from seasoned campers constantly getting cheap frags, but I don't see anything wrong with that.

well if you are bored, you are probably frequenting the wrong areas "camp" an open area witha lot of spawns instead, maybe a ledge with alittle height advantage on that area... i sorta stay in the same spot on a lot of railz maps, but i still hit the frag limit the fastest 9/10 with no effort because i know where people are, i see a lot of people or hear them as they spawn and i usually have a positional advantage while being able to see a large area....

kinda like tltf, its best to be up on the third level on either side because you can hit all the people on jump pads, can see a large area, can see most the spawns, and you have a height advantage so your fights are a little in your favor

there is one map that is REALLY coming to mind on this subject but idk the name of it its fairly large and has been in the railz rotation for awhile, ill have to look up on it

Yeah, there are definitely some maps that promote the strategy more than others....I don't remember the names off the top of my head but maybe I'll try to remember them the next time I play them.

I don't consider them cheap frags just because it takes skill to take out someone with one shot (generally).   One miss & you're dead yourself normally.

But it's like people who are good with nades: bastards!

one map that just came to mind is the kitchen map, there is the counter that you can stand on in the corner where you can get a good amount of spawns and its really the center of everything, controlling that area even if its a bit open will help you get frags faster... however, camping the cabinets is fucking retarded

I remember when I was playing as "Bad Mouse" I would nade spam the counter area and the floor area from the cabinet above the sink 

I remember Vae eating some nades coming to get the "Nade Spammer" 

I died alot more than I got frags, but I was just screwing around anyway.  See Vae no everyone trys to win every map.
I like to spam nades when it is a multi-level map and there are a lot of players, it is skill-less but funny.

Sometimes I try harder with nades when others are tossing the pineapple.
