Help a brazilian noob whit tips to online gaming.

Hello!

I'm a noob to make settings for online performance for my q2. I need help!

-The speed of my local connection is "100.0 Mbps" as I see at right down corner of my monitor. I use connection via xDSL, I believe. I live in Brazil.
I have a good video card, 1 gb. It's Ge-Force, but can not remember which kind to say at the moment. I have a mouse also reasonable.

-To play Quake Live is a beauty, but I have need of settings to play for my performance q2 satisfactorily.

I usually get to play online with QL 170 (USA), 280 (Euro) ping. Of course I'm slower that my opponents, but I've annoying freezes. In my q2, when I play online at tastyspleen, I get around 190-240ms and I froze several times and it is annoying.

So then I'd like some tips on how to improve my performance with some tips to online accuracies on the mouse settings and adjustments of online gaming. What is the "set rate" I should use? What fps should I use as "cl_maxfps" (I use 120), r_maxfps, cl_async, m_directinput, cl_protocol, etc.. Whether to R1Q2, AprQ2 or EGL.

ps: I can not make many leaps when I use the EGL. I can not even raise any of the boxes RL q2dm8, for example. Not with all the fps in the world. What can I do?

On higher ping connections I would recommend using r1q2 and experiment with the following settings:

set rate 10000 // the server will send updates in smaller chunks when rate is lower
set cl_async 1 // separates network fps (cl_maxfps) from video rendering fps (r_maxfps)
set cl_maxfps 33
set r_maxfps 200
vid_restart
(^ you cannot jump those boxes with these settings, but it could prevent packetloss.)

To jump those boxes with r1q2 you need:
set cl_async 0
set cl_maxfps 100
set gl_swapinterval 0
vid_restart

mmm, ok! I will try it later!

-"set cl_async 1" separates "network fps" (cl_maxfps) from video "rendering fps"(r_maxfps). Then these "fps system" are 2 different things? And even with "r_maxfps 200" I still can not climb in the boxes? What cruel question: Or I climb into boxes or I play without freezing! lol

-These settings for jumping in boxes, like cl_maxfps 100 and gl_swapinterval I already knew and I made many trick jumps with it. And I wore r1q2, aprq2 ... but I can not do trick jumps with the EGL. Why?

Err... you know some tips for mouse settings too?

setting your r_maxfps to 200 will RENDER 200 frames, so the game will play smooth, and the cl_maxfps at 33 will send 33 frame updates to the server per second.... with a higher ping over longer distances less updates per second can mean a more smooth game

to do a box jump you do not need async set to 0, but you do need your physics fps value (cl_maxfps, determining how many frames are sent to the server per second) to be over a certain value that i dont know exactly but i know its over 100... this does not mean you cant double jump, double jumps should actually be a tad easier with a lower fps value, but you might strafe jump slightly slower, the box jump i am referring to is jumping from flat ground up onto a 64 unit crate as tall as a normal model such as the boxes on dm8

as far as mouse input, general guide lines for fps mouse input is use direct input, dont change windows mouse sensitivity from default as it will either skip movement commands to go slower or skip pixels to go faster, and dont use mouse acceleration of any kind... the last one can be a bit tricky as even disabling the "increase pointer accuracy" checkbox in windows which SHOULD control mouse accel, does not actually get rid of it, and often if you are really picky about it you will need to run a registry edit to make your mouse movement a pure 1:1.... with cvars in r1q2 i use m_directinput 1 and m_fixaccel 1 and let everything else stay as default, i believe the fixaccel only really does shit on xp but i could be wrong

if you are running stock q2, just switching over to r1q2 might actually give you some improved performance

and if you are unaware of how the netcode works... NO the rail and all other hitscan do not have projectile speed... if you have 100ms ping, you have to aim 100ms ahead, if you have 160ms ping, you have to aim 160ms ahead... if you didnt know that, knowing that now makes high ping play a lot easier lol

Thanks by tips, dudes! This settings has been worked good for me!  Now i can play with 160/170ms and NO MORE FREEZING! Awesome!

I played in Rogue DM ( i meet with FaderJok0! gg, dude!   ) and Tourney4 opentdm servers and i played well, was fun.

Not sure, but as a guess it may be related to the server-side 10 Hz tick rate.

I just realized how reading what I said by itself could sound a little weird. I am unsure of the minimum fps to do it (I haven't played in over 60 fps in like 4 years anyway), but I'm nearly positive that I have cleared these 64 unit boxes vae speaks of with cl_maxfps 90(software mode). Not every attempt would be successful, so I'm guessing the minimum would be in the high 80's

So me having 60 fps barely disables me from doing it....

I've been playing with 60fps for years as well, but you can have a smooth 60fps or a setup where q2 isn't quite as smooth.  For example you can play with 60fps but your laptop might be running to many processes and introduce a slight delay.  I actually kind of like 60fps, but I"m sure 90,120, or other optimal values play a bit smoother.

as low as 66 can clear a 64 crate?

lol i swear i tried it on 90 awhile back and i wasnt able to do it....

is adren doing side strafe + forward like you do on dm1? cause im talking about ones like the crate in the center of rdm2 and the crates on dm8 where you can just hold forward next to the crate jump up and be on it... i guess ill have to try

EDIT: just tried on a local server, at cl_maxfps 91 it allowed me to jump straight up onto the 64 unit crates on dm8, at 90 it wouldnt let me

It is possible, but it's waaaaay easier with a fps above 100! It's also easier in some maps because of the position the box has in the Z-Axis..
(Not sure if it was high or low that made it easier)

if you have a corner with a 32 unit crate and a 64 unit crate you can just strafe into that corner with two directions like forward and left and you can jump up onto it without the crate needing to be under the origin of the axis and without needing as high of an fps value, this is what you do to get YA on dm1 in two jumps without doing a double jump
