ping problems... no kidding, i need help

now that i have cable i normally have about a fifty ping. lately i've had high 100's, tonight 200. i manipulated this and that back in the phone days to tweek my connection. what besides routing has anything to do with my ping with cable i.e. cookies, stuff running in the background... others?... cuz i've checked this stuff out. one more thing, sometimes my ping is fine, in the fifties, but others...when its high i close q2, run crap cleaner, sometimes spybot, and sometimes  re-boot, but none of this seems to help.... HELp

Is anything using your upload?

Do you share the connection with a router?

If you are using a router are their other people using the second computer at the same time?

As far as I know the only thing that affects your ping on cable is your Upload being used by other things (i.e., p2p) and/or the routing to the server.  Could also be a problem on your ISP's network.

Anyway, the program from AnalogX should work, I've used some of his stuff before, he does a good job.  Although I can't get his HyperTrace prorgram to work for me, I think it has something to do with needing to use UDP packets for traceroutes with my ISP, I believe HyperTrace only uses TCP.

I'm not sure, I don't have anything blocking sites, I even tried logging in to the ftp that the link is to, and it wouldn't connect.  I'm not going to worry about it.

I would NOT tell them that I was having a problem with gaming.  They probably wouldn't pay too much attention to that.  I would phrase it like "I'm having problem with realtime communications on the net, and I've identified routers on your network that are the problem.  This is impacting my business.",  or some such.

Yeah the site itself I can get too and works fine for me, I just can't download their UO Trace program 

But I don't need it anyway.

You should be able to identify the problem routers in your path.

Yeah, all that makes sense. I think if somoenoe suspects a route problem, they ought to post the suspect route ip here and let it be checked by others from different locations that go through the same link to verify it.

Using "traceroute" one will find the routes packages go through, but to think that the first high ping routers are the culprits can be (and most often IS) misleading.

I used the word "normally", which has been my experience with routers.  However, there is no hard and fast "always the case" scenario, for sure. 

For example, if I have a 16 hop path somewhere, and I'm sub-10ms up to hop 8, then hop 9 is 255ms, but hop 10 is 17ms,  hop 11 is 22ms, and then hop 12 is 800ms, and every router after that is over 800ms, obviously I'm not going to identify hop 9 as the culprit. 

My experience has been where one hop is 20ms and the next is 800ms or some such.  Every succeeding router in the path is exceedingly high, as well.  Having someone in Network Ops at whoever owns the router(s) in question has usually solved the issue for me. 

Finding who to email when the routers are outside my IP can be dicey sometimes, but I use "Whois" servers when possible to track down the owners, if it's not obvious.
