Aren't these high speeds a lie anyway? When I download stuff and it's fast, it's usually never past 2MB/s.

LIke the others said Barton if it issaying 2MB you are actually getting about 16Mb a second according to these speed tests. You also have to be aware of burstable speeds. For instance some ISPs like ours will allow you to burst faster than your contract for X amount of data before you are throttled to your contract. For instance some of our customer's with 20 meg can actually hit 30-40 meg down on speed tests because we allow a short burst of speed. Now that would only come into play if you are getting alot higher of a speed score than what your contract is set for.

As far as getting those speeds in every day use it really relies on where you are downloading from. For instance I always get my full 50Mb down when downloading from Giganews, because they allow me 20 simultaniuos uncapped connections. However I rarely see those speeds anywhere else, simply because noone servers stuff up that fast.

When downloding through IE I can see up around 6.5MB if the site can actually server the files that fast.


That is kind of why I haven't upgraded to 107meg yet , although I would be interested in seeing how quick I can get a 1.5 gig rip. Right now it is about 4-4.5 minutes.

It's not the distance from your house to that location, it's the distance from your closest ISP data center to that location.

http://whatismyipaddress.com/ also lists the data center that you're at according to the rest of the internet.  That's the point all your internet access filters through.
