Increasing CPU Fan speeds permanently.
« on: June 27, 2010, 09:30:16 AM »
yoyo, i'm having major overheat issues in this summer, cpu is getting up to 80-90 degrees playing games then auto shutting down. got a big ass fan blowing "cool" air in and angled so its blowing hot air out as well if that makes any sense (I assume so anyway). looking at the temps on speedfan I see how its only running at like 2500 rpm at those temps, and 1700 ish while idle. is there a way to keep it at 2500 constantly, or even higher? stock cpu hsf btw. AMD Athlon 64 X2 5800

Come to think of it, all my fans (front one sucking in, back one blowing out, cpu fan) all barely feel like they're blowing/sucking much at all! especially the front one!

There are settings in my BIOS that control fan speed. (Auto fan speed, or manual) Did you check yours?

yeah I did, there are voltages and stuff but they're all unaccessible, whether I tried setting the CPU FAN Auto speed to disabled or not. there wasn't a setting for manual though :( I've ordered a new HSF anyway, I suspect the reasoning for these ridiculous temps is the thermal pad has by now likely long needed replacing, and the stock one is pretty garbage anyway. I just hate installing HSF's :(

Thats a pretty hot cpu normally adam and the stock heatsink does stink. Good idea to start with the thermal paste or arctic silver.  Those fan speeds are slow what size are they? Bigger fans (120mm) are generally slower then 80mm fans. My 80mm fans (3) on an old athlon 4600 run over 2500 rpm in a hot room and get up to 60c at idle.

Abooooooout this big: http://www.pacificgeek.com/productimages/xl/AMD-AM2-4200.jpg

As for the thermal gunk, the pad that comes with the arctic cooling unit i've ordered seems to be praised highly in doing a decent job, if it doesent I can always replace at a later date, I just think that since i've had this for well over a year and a half - 2 years now, and the state of my old hsf/cpu and the paste on that when I took it apart, it's pretty safe to assume the thermal pad is fucked on this particular one im using now. I believe the biggest thing to blame is the heat in this room still though, it's absoloutely unbearable at times. when it's 28-30 degrees outside, I can't imagine how bad it is in here! I sweat hella hard just sitting down in here, now it's cooled down though (15 degrees outside, night) the CPU is 25!!! degrees idle (admittedly, got the big ass desk fan blowing on it still), as opposed to almost 50 midday, and doesent go past 50-60 full load (lfd2 on very high settings, for example) but the temp change is so drastic when the air is hotter, it leads me to think that at least partially the problem is the cooling isn't particularly effective either. 50 idle to 90+ safety shutdowns is pretty bad ;P

I meant the other fans lol  believe me I know what the stock amd fan looks like! btw I do have totally stock fan on cpu and 80mm (2) fans venting case. Beyond the paste it sounds like ur fans arent speeding up when under load. I really would expect to see something in the bios for fan control..

meant to add that you can buy fans with power connect to power supply and not mb. these fans usually run fast med and slow speeds or whatever

If fans are blowing faster, keep in mind that means more noise. I don't think having the fans blowing a little faster is really going to cool it enough to make it worth all the noise. Try leaving the side of the tower open to let more air in there. I know all about fans and noise because my piece of shit sounds like a god damn shop vac when I run any games. I just leave the side of the case open now to let more air in there. It seems to make the fans have to run a little slower and cuts down on the fan noise somewhat.

It could also have something to do with where your tower is sitting. If its parked under a desk or in a corner, it obviously doesn't have the ability to move that hot air away and take in cooler air, probably just recirculating that warmer air. Might be a good idea to set it somewhere where it has about a 1 or 2 foot clearance from any walls, maybe get a box fan and have that blowing towards it too in order to move the warmer air away. I tried that and it helps some. But then... you have the extra noise of the box fan.

These are certified redneck computer solutions.
meant to add that you can buy fans with power connect to power supply and not mb. these fans usually run fast med and slow speeds or whatever

Can't remember if the last one I replaced had any connection to the mobo at all. I have 2 fans, the one right over the CPU (and the side of the case has a funnel tunnel that fits over that heatsink), and the one that blows out the back. The one in back crapped out, I believe it only connected to the power supply. When I replaced it, I took the CPU heat sink and fan out, and blew all the dust out of the heatsink and fan. Also took apart the video card and blew the dust out of that fan and heatsink too. It seem to run a little quieter for a while, but still not as silent as I'd like, thus why I leave the side off now. Still makes a good bit of noise. I guess with the size and wattage of power supplies these days, it's getting harder and harder to make systems that run silent and cool like the old days. I think I saw something online once about computers that are liquid cooled with glycol or something. That would be nice, but unfortunately I don't have a money tree in my garden.

ahh, alright. in that case, 2 x 120mm fans. one front, one back. front one goes so slow you can stop it by barely touching it! both are connected by molex to the psu not the motherboard though. I'm not too fussed about noise, nearly always have tunes playing and I have indeed got a big desk fan blowing on it with a side off foc, ill give moving it further from the wall a go since it is pretty close and obstructed. thx for help yall

When I start playing Quake II, my laptop CPU temp rapidly rises from around 50 degrees Centigrade to 92 degrees (within 2 minutes). At that point the thermal sensor throttles the CPU speed WAAAAYYY back to prevent overheating. Is there anything I can do to stop the heat?

on a laptop, you can't do much except for get one of those laptop cradles with additional fans and air flow channels that sets the laptop up off the desk surface a bit. these can drop you a few degrees pretty easily.
