XATRIX & XRAZY

Quadz,

With the recent explosion of new map overrides, I would like to suggest that ALL (including the classic) maps be made available on the XRAZY server and the XATRIX server would have the stock maps.

It's frustrating that a player has to jump from one server to the next to play certain maps.

Some observations:

Fist,
Mutant gets little play compared to Vanilla or DM, however mutant is important enough that it does get play at least once a day to a specific crowd. Players playing mutant are usually DM and Vanilla players who obviously can't play on all 3 servers at once. It's existance provides another play option, no matter how much traffic it gets, it's a great server. One of my favs

Second,
The xatrix community is a smaller subset of the q2 players. Having a xatrix server to regularly play on, regardless of what is played on it, is a big deal and I'm sure that they are extremely happy just to play. I think that this means that there are not enough xatrix players around in order for there to be purists (at least enough to realistically play on a purist server)

Third,
There probably aren't enough untraditional players that they would complain about changing XATRIX by making regular maps only in rotation and everything else mymap only.

Fourth,
XRAZY is already a place with huge download sizes, unconventional maps that have to be learned on the fly, and an overall "every map will be a new experience" situation. So I don't see it being a radical change to make XRAZY into the new map dump.

Fifth,
The normal map upload process for tastyspleen is to upload a map yourself, and then specify where you want it. If you want it on vanilla (this part is by coincidence and probably not by design) then quadz will put it up on mutant for players to test. He'll also put it up on TS500 in order to test it. Good maps will be played on mutant a few days in a row and will often draw people onto TS500 to play it more. After all of this, then conversation is started in irc or the forums to promote the map as being appropriate for vanilla. After all of this, if it is deemed fun and big enough then it is finally placed on vanilla.

Having a 3rd server could provide this kind of process (however loosely followed and coincidental that it may be) to xatrix players.

We have a vanilla2 and other rarely used FFA servers. I honestly don't think that a 3rd server will split users, only provide options for things like this.

I appreciate your input peewee, but I don't entirely understand where you stand. 

We only have 2 servers now.  I don't see what's wrong with wanting to be able to play any map on one of those servers, and leaving one for classic style maps.

I also don't buy into Quadz thinking that all of the maps on XRAZY are 'themed' and hence demand special placement.  There are PLENTY of classic styled maps on that server, and plenty specialized unconventional maps on XATRIX.  It's a friggin mess.
One server, two servers or three servers makes no difference to me.  I just want to be able to play any map from 1 place.

The majority of the players who play XATRIX seem to prefer the newer maps, and most of those maps are on XRAZY.  It's total BS, that we should have to jump to XATRIX to play the other maps.  It's not like there are lots of players playing on both servers at the same time.

Whats the harm in trying what I say.  Try it for a month, and if it doesn't work, change it.

One thing is certain. It sucks the way it is now.  Side note: Too many BIG maps in the rotation on XRAZY.  Too often there are just a couple players playing, and a huge low-action map comes up. It's especially frustrating when it's a huge indoors tunnel type map...

I'm just laying out a giant brain dump on the whole thing. In the end I think that a 3rd server with all of the maps, in which all new maps are placed first, is a good option. Then you guys can decide where to put them if you want the new maps in rotation.

We can only upload new maps to XATRIX, not XRAZY anymore

We should choose which server to upload it to, especially if the map is more "xrazy" style or if its the classic style

There are some outliers, and there are indeed a few that I feel don't belong on there at all.  Even spawngirl had observed that some of her very early map overrides don't really fit on xrazy anymore.

By 'themed', I didn't just mean a homogenous visual style to the maps.  However, I do think for the most part spawngirl took particular care when selecting maps for their visual aesthetic quality. 

The themes are accomplished by combining groups of stylistically similar maps with ambient sounds.  So there is a group of undead-themed maps, horror-themed maps, spaceship-themed maps, nature-themed maps, etc.

Even maps that one might consider classic-styled, like xspasmo6 and xztn2dm4, fit in as part of the spaceship themed group, tied together by the ambient sound treatment.

(And again, I'm aware there are SOME maps on xrazy that are outliers and don't fit with any theme.)

Now, of course, if you're not downloading the ambient sounds, you might not be aware of the themed groups of maps.  Or, the whole concept might not seem interesting or appealing or whatever.

However, in my view, spawngirl has accomplished something rather innovative and unique in Q2.

And as such, I'm disinclined to want to dilute the experience by adding maps or overrides to xrazy that were made without concern for the overarching style of that server.  Or something like that.

I dunno, it could all be a tempest in a tea cup.  But, it seems important to me to attempt to preserve xrazy's uniqueness.

Which is why, given those constraints, all I seem to come up with is the "third server" option.

And Maybe if we host an individual poll every time a map gets uploaded and have people VOTE on wether it should be on xatrix or xrazy. Just a thought
