Buzzing in background?

So i recently acquired a sweet pair of high end headphones, and all is good :) im lucky that my motherboard actually has very very good on board sound

The problem though, is that in quake2 i have this irritating background sort of buzzing sound... and its only in quake2, i have no problems what so ever on the desktop, i was literally watching a demo, paused it, alt tabbed to desktop, and it was gone... played some songs, no problem... went back to q2 and instantly it was back... it doesnt happen during loading times though so... idk

Im assuming that it could be a problem with the openAL stuff? maybe? does r1q2 even use openAL? i tried dropping both windows volume down, and ingame s_volume and nothing put a dent in it :/

I really like these headphones, but that damn sound is so irritating and distracting

Sorry I can't be of any help.  ;D

just some jvc ones, i didnt buy em x) 60$ pair was half price so some one else bought em and i have them now :) gotta love people who cant pass up a good deal...

they are very nice compared to my previous broken in half walmart pair lol

ON TOPIC: i just tried with a premade client downloaded from the q2scene forums (the one labled original quake2) and there is no buzzing absolutely what so ever :/

I tried with r1q2 (no openAL) and heard virtually no buzzing/hissing from my Sennheisers.   :humm:

you might want to check your config and fiddle with the sound settings... could be something there if a stock copy of q2 didnt produce the same result.

if you can't reproduce it with the stock install, put r1q2 in there and try that with the stock config.
if you don't get it then, copy your config to the stock q2 folder and try to reproduce it like that.
if that doesn't do it, put one pak at a time into the folder and test more.

Somewhere along the line you will narrow down the possibilities to the point where you can tell what is up.

What sound quality setting are you using? 44khz, 22khz, 11khz?

those all the sound settings? the other client i tried that was running r1q2 also, the only differences were a 0.14 mixahead and primary 1, tried changing them :/ and it basically made no change at all

openAL is basically paired with openGL, just GL is graphics, AL is audio... i dont know much about audio, and i dont know much about how quake2 actually functions :/ but i would assume that i have to use at least some form of openAL

I remember when all my sounds became filled with static. Try this:

  • Load r1q2
  • exec default.cfg
  • quit
  • Comment out all sound settings in autoexec.cfg & other configs (not including config.cfg) with //
  • Remove all configs from various mod folders, or put them in baseq2 (they still work from there)
  • Load r1q2
  • Listen to sounds
  • If they are still broken, quit (if not, you're good, just uncomment the sound settings one by one until you find the bad one)
  • Delete config.cfg
  • Load r1q2
  • exec default.cfg
  • quit
  • Load r1q2
  • Try changing settings one by one until you find the bad one (with me, it was s_khz "44"; it needed to be "22")

Worked for me :) .

That's what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure most of (if not all) the sounds used in Quake2 are sampled at 22khz, so using 44khz causes the 22khz sounds to be converted up to 44khz which will often add fuzzy noise to the higher frequencies that you may not notice through monitor speakers. It really just depends on the construction of the speakers (size of the drivers, etc) as to how noticeable it is.

s_initsound 1 is directsound, only s_initsound 2 loads openal. It isn't effecting you in this case.
