Quake 3 still worth it?

Had a hankering for some q3 the past few days, but I know quake live is out now, and I had a few games is a lot of fun, should I just continue with QL or is q3 still worth playing?

I dunno,  I went from q1 to q3,  played for a month and went back to q1.

Quake live also played for a bit then I got sucked into mapping,  but it's basically Q3.
tons of people to play too.

I vote you just stick with Quake live,  nobody reached the 250,000 frag count yet,  could be you

I guess I will do, it's actually getting more fun the more I play. but it's just a distraction from my one true heartthrob. q2! and speaking of which, we haven't played in too long

I am not an avid fan of the q3 netcode or gameplay (therefore i suck at it). I will defend quake3 because id tech 3 is the biggest thing to happen to FPS since tech 1. I love quake 2, but there were a limited number of titles based on the engine. Tech 3 has a billion games based on it, with at least one coming out just last year.

So the major difference between q3 and QL is that q3 is mod-able. So if you're going for the same gameplay then stick with QL. But if you ever plan on making your own mod sometime in the future, the Q3 engine is a great place to start. Getting used to it now will just make modding things easier in the future. Well at least that is the fuzzy logic I use to justify the need to keep q3 in mind even though QL has all but replaced it. Basically QL came out as an upgrade of q3 rather than a new game in and of itself. Take that however you want it to mean.

After Q4's lame clone of Q3 deathmatch, taking shots at QL is a wasted insult. It's like calling Danny Devito short when Mickey Rooney is in the same room.



EDIT: According to claims on gossip sites Mickey Rooney is 5'1" and Danny Devito is 5'0". Who knew?

I joined Quake Live last week,and since I also tried theQW:Enemy Territory demo it installed Punkbuster and the conflict has made me get booted out of every game I try playing. I am not sure how many Quake 3 servers are still out there now that Live has streamlined it all,but there may be a few...good luck.

if I want MP I'll either do Q2 or ETQW.  Both a lot of fun to play.  Q3A... while the mods were awesome & so are the graphics (still!), the game itself takes itself TO seriously.

the baseq3 game is crap. so if you have qlive don't change. if you want something closer to q2 movement you gotta try q3 + cpma (cpma took over OSP as popular gameplay mod) and try CPM mode. Double jumps, aircontrol, bunnyhopping etc.... if you did want to try make sure you have q3 + 1.32c patch + latest version of CPMA +maps....  cpma + maps are located at www.promode.org.... any other questions just im me.
