Connection speed with Q2 freezing up
« on: December 24, 2009, 08:51:39 AM »
Hey hey, I am getting  stuck in the game like it freezes up and starts skipping like a scratched record then bam, it will cut me loose. I ran net graph and got a screen shot of it. It is here i could not link it for some reason.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ethanmilesband/4211479114/

I also did a speed test and line check and all is good, here are them results.
:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 12221 Kbps about 12.22 Mbps (tested with 12288 kB)
Download Speed is:: 1492 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 625 Kbps about 0.6 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 76 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Main)

I was getting so angry at it because it just seemed like some one was like pinging me hard because it only happens say if, I am in first spot, or just after I grab Quad Damage,, It might be just coincidence, but i am getting some wierd stuff in my firewall log about UDMP Ping from a certain address, and every time it happens, I can go to the log of recent events, and that same ip address is there showing it pinged me. Am I crazy or what. Help please!!!  :bigcry:

Did you mean UDP ping or ICMP ping? Some routers use Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) to determine the routing for incoming packets to overcome problems with streaming media using UDP over NAT boundaries. They can sometimes lose track of where a UDP frame is supposed to go and will log it as a UDP ping packet.

It sounds like you are just getting lag. It could be your connection settings or it could be congestion on the network between your location an the server that cannot be controlled. If you are running XP, they could be less than optimum for your broadband service type. Optimum speed is more than just a speed test report, for more detailed information about your connection I recommend http://www.dslreports.com/tools where you can get the information and tools you need to find out if your settings are good. If you are using Vista or Win7, observe the advisory about tweaking.

Based on the screenshot and your description of quake "skipping like a scratched record"...

I've had the same thing happen under both XP Pro, and (a little less) under Win 7 64-bit.

In my case, the culprit was my eSATA drivers.  Whenever I have a drive plugged into an eSATA port, I get periodic freezes like that, which manifest in Q2 just as you've described.

In my case I've never found a solution for the eSATA problem, so I plug the hard drive into the USB port instead.

But anyway, since you mention "skipping like a scratched record", it makes me suspect it may be something on your local system that is causing the periodic freezes, rather than network glitches.

(I don't think just losing network connection makes Q2 sounds start "skipping" ... ?)

Regards,

quadz

Yeah this is definitely not net related, quadz is on the right track - HW freezes like that commonly come from bad sectors, check the Windows Event Log / System for any disk read errors.

Just some thoughts :

Do you have changed something lately (Something like new/other hardware or another virusscanner or firewall) ?
Or new custom quake 2 paks ?
Do you get the same problem at the same spot/map when playing offline ?
Checked your harddrive with scandisk (chkdsk) and defrag ?
Does device manager show some problems ?
Bios settings ?
Cleaned your computer from the inside (dust) ?
Checked the temperature (like fans working, checking the heat from your hardware and computer case) ?
Checked for bad capacitors on the mainboard, videocard, soundcard and harddrive(s) ?
Checked the connectors/cables inside your computer and pulled cards out of the agp/pci/isa slots and put them back in (with power off ofcourse) ?

Did you have done a ping and tracert to tastyspleen ?

Do you use the onboard network card or a expansion slot network card ?
Try another network card.

Some other things you can check :

Low FPS when using NVIDIA drivers and multi-core CPU

If you use the latest NVIDIA drivers on a multi-core system, you may notice a considerable FPS drop when using anticheat. This is due to a multi-core optimization NVIDIA tried to implement that causes problems for some games. To disable this setting, open Display Properties and find Settings, Advanced, Performance and Quality, Advanced Settings, Threaded Optimization. Set it to "Off".

Stable/enough power from the power supply unit ?
Checked memory with memtest86+ ?

Dont have more ideas at the moment  :P

just to test, try running a different OS off a boot CD/DVD & running Q2 off of that.  If there's no issues then it's something with windows & a reinstall may be the best way to take care of it.  If it still happens it's a hardware/ISP issue.
