The good old days.
« on: August 19, 2009, 10:10:50 AM »
There was a time in Quake II when you could have friendly duels with people and neither cared if they won or lost but about having fun and getting better. It seems everyone left in the community now (with a few exceptions) is so worried about their reputation and ego that they don't want to risk losing in a duel. Then you have these players who play in 2v2's and 3v3's and have a good score and think they are great. Here's a news flash, scores in teams and in general don't mean everything. This is because any decent player knows in order to play the best for the team it often requires you to sacrafice your life and die multiple times rushing with weak guns ect.. to reclaim control. This is also the case in a 1v1 (especially on edge) where you may have to die 4-5 times before you can retake control. Then of course they can always hide at upper rocket which is why i've always said edge is a bad duel map once you reach a certain level. However this notion unfortunately was never picked up on by new school players and is why I get so frustrated playing with teammates I don't know. Stop worrying about your score so much and start playing as a team, this is what used to make quake2 fun and not this ego war that is constantly being waged. Any decent player knows that if you go 10-0 and you partner goes 0-10 then either your partner is a terrible player, or your a terrible teammate (most likely the latter). Quake II will never be what it used to but we can at least have some fun games before it completely dies. Sorry for the rant this isn't usually my style. Happy Fragging.

I agree 100percent.  I was playing to get a positive score in a 3vs3 last week, the team got totally raped, like 0-20 scores, and I finished with a positive score.  But there is the other side of the coin to, where if you keep dying and not taking a toll on the enemy in the process, you're not gonna get anywhere either.

And yeah if you get chain spawn and get all the shit, you can pretty much just chill at upper rl and call it a day.  But if the players are equal edge makes for some really fun game sometimes.

The other thing I forgot to mention that goes hand in hand with this ego problem is people joining a team and not playing. I've sat on servers for 20+ minutes jumping around in warmup mode because people are so worried about talking garbage and then never end up readying up. Sometimes it is the case that teams are unfair and people don't ready up. Well, I have no problem teaming with anyone who has good team skills regardless of how well they aim. But don't expect me to switch teams to someone that has no binds, plays for their own score, and talks garbage beacuse it's not going to happen.

This is a common problem when a group of players gets continuously better at the game, and no room is made for newer players to have competitive experiences without playing with the more dedicated loons. This can be seen in the EDL, which has had essentially the same bracket of players for the past several years.

I was thinking during QuakeCon that a tastyspleen open ladder (not tournament) for players could be utilized for several play types, and might help generate some competition that doesn't dwindle down to only the last and best players.

But yeah, these are issues that need to be responded to with some amount of effort, because we can all see what happens when it's left on it's own.

Well when a game gets to be 12 years old the population thins. Quake 2 (and other games in general) have always had players with big egos. So at this point the general population is these left over, washed up Quake 2 players. Most too scared to try a new FPS because of their Q2 ego.

Well unfortunately i dont think anything will change, since most of the time on 2vs2/3vs3 the better players teamup just for the sake of making newer players look silly.

There aint much to do about it and it will not change, many players here have bad attitudes and thats the bottom line. You cant cure a dangerous cancer, and these guys are the same, they will keep on beeing jerks, waste time in warmup, talk trash, teamup to humiliate others, instead of making it more enjoyable for everyone.

I think it's more the case that good players don't want to play with bad teammates. Most of the players in the q2 community have good aim, the problem is their team skills. It has nothing to do with making people feel "silly" after all this is a video game over the internet, the only time you would feel silly is if you had an e-go.

The problem is that the people who know how to team refuse to play. There are always potential for good 2vs2's and sometimes even 3vs3. Theres usually a solid 4 people playing at night, the problem is most just sit around til the other 3 good players leave. I could name off every single one of them but that would just cause drama that isnt even needed. We've talked about doing a randomize teams vote in these forums before, but there are too many loopholes for it to work. There is no solution to the problem, just gotta get lucky and have 4 decent people on that are willing to play. Johnson,Vert,Senz,pyr3x,ah!,kings,xanax,ryu,surich,waff,flarez,striker,neticz are always down to play, just getting them all on at the same time is very difficult. Most of those names arent very active as it is.

Loopholes?

hmmm... newmap changeup of teams by client number, force skins from server to establish teams, server monitors IP and player names to avoid disco/reco aliasing, disallow skin change commands from clients, you could enforce it all server side with a little thought about how to code it for the mod. As long as the same players were connected the server could rotate them. There are only three unique combinations for two-player teams.

0 & 1 vs 3 & 2
0 & 2 vs 1 & 3
0 & 3 vs 2 & 1

But yes, sometimes the best DM players can be very bad team players because they simply don't have the skills to coordinate or read the other player's actions. Voice intercom can be laggy and often too late for fast game action and typing is a real pain unless you have some decent binds.
