Screwy Internet
« on: August 03, 2009, 05:49:05 PM »
Hey, i'm at the end of my tether now with this. For the past 2-3 days my internet has been flaky as hell, I haven't been able to play Aion, WoW, Q2, browse youtube videos, even load webpages with normal and acceptable speed, often with flat out disconnects from games or unplayable lag with delays of 2-3 seconds on EVERYTHING. As I said, this is the same with browsing as well. I was going to try and download the latest drivers for my new card then I saw 10.4kbs and said fuck that. >_> All downloads are very very slow.

Here's what i've tried:

"Repair"ing using the windows repair tool.
Checking the hardware I have, all seems correct and in place.
Patience, turned router off for hours to see if it did anything, same case.
Complete system reinstall, though it was due for one its still shit.

The strange thing is, downstairs all the laptops and the wireless PC are fine, and have been for months, they are all wireless and although the wireless sucks up here (hence why im wired) they have acceptable speeds and whatnot.

If it matters, the following PC's are connected like so:

Downstairs: BT Home Hub router

2 Wireless connections - 1 laptop 1 desktop
1 Long ethernet cable to my room - 1 desktop.

Any ideas? : :please:

This is a wired PC? Doing a complete system reinstall would seem to rule out a malware infection unless you didn't wipe the hard drive with the OS installation and merely did a repair. I'd do a complete Spybot S&D scans and Adaware scans on the machine followed by an Anti-virus scan to be sure it's not infected with something.

It's quite possible the network card is bad or you have a broken or intermittent patch cable to the router.

If the computer has wireless and hard wire network capability, make sure you are using only one of them.

Yes, the problem PC in question is mine the wired one. I completely wiped, reformatted and installed so the malware is absoloutely not an issue, besides I gave it a good scan before I decided to reinstall and it found nothing.

Hmm :/ my network card is inbuilt, part of the motherboard. Why would it just break? I don't know what an intermittent patch cable is, unless you mean the Ethernet cable trailing up to my room.

This desktop is only capable of wired.

GRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAWWWWWWUUUUUGH firefox just took 15 minutes to download like 7mb.

Just a couple of other things I have noticed. I have more packets recieved than sent, wtf.

also, when my net was working peachy in my network connections it would look like this:

"Internet Gateway"
 Disconnected
 Internet Connection

then underneath

1394 Connection                Local Area Connection
Connected                          Connected

but now (although its weird right? how before when it said it was "disconected" it worked.

it just says on the internet gateway bit: Unavailable: Device Disabled where "Disconnected" was.

It sounds to me like the Ethernet cable is bad or the network interface is bad. The cable can fail at the crimp connectors or even break in the middle and cause these symptoms. A patch cable is usually about 1 to 6 meters long and in small offices they can cause problems with 10/100 routers when they are too short but this is less frequent now.

Troubleshoot by substitution.
A. Replace the cable between the computer and the router to see if there is improvement.
B. Use another computer on the suspect cable to see if it works OK.

If A shows improvement on the flakey computer, cable is bad, problem solved.

If B shows improvement on a substitute computer while A shows no improvement on suspect computer then the Ethernet interface is bad on the MOBO. Bad news. Get an Ethernet card for the computer and disable the built-in one.

Yes, MOBO Ethernet interfaces go bad sometimes.

Tracert's can show timeouts on hops that don't respond to ICMP frames so this test can sometimes need interpretation. If the thing still shows nothing after 30 hops there may be other problems with the router.

Did you block your computer's IP in the router configuration?
Did you turn on parental controls in the router so that computer is now blocked?

These would completely stop access to the outside, not just slow it down.

Do ping routerip -t and if ping consistently works then it's probably not the Ethernet cable or interface.
ctrl-c stops the ping -t command.

Is your little brother downloading torrents on another machine and hogging all the bandwidth? :)

Is your neighbor stealing your bandwidth off the wireless? :)

Seems I was wrong, every computer is suffering from it. went down and tested them.

I haven't messed with the router config in months and I don't even think my router has parental controls :P

ping 192.168.1.66 -t returns pings consistently.

and finally nope, he uses a school laptop he'd get thrashed for doing so (by me and them), only I really download torrents every now and again, unsure on the neighbor thing but considering there are like 7-8 other routers that are useable (seriously my neighbors are dumb, no security at all except for on like 2-3 of them, prolly default passwords anyway) - I would doubt it. and the keys and stuff for our wireless are weird as fuck, would imagine they arent too guessable.

I have only one idea other than the router is fucked. (in which case, sigh, hours on an expensive British Telecom in queues to get an indian that trys to get me to do stuff like "test microfeelter" and "turn pc on and off" and "search for virusssss" before I finally talk to someone british who tells me the SAME THING and finally they offer to send an engineer out and charge me and i'll be like er no just send me a new home hub thanks. which they'll prolly try and charge me for anyway despite router being free with this package - BT customer support is terrible)

anyway, perhaps my sister has yanked one of the wires out as she has done oh so many times before in the extension lead, I'll check it tommorow but its a new one so it shouldnt have been yanked already  :dohdohdoh:

Strange configuration. The routers are usually 192.168.1.1 or at least consistently in the low numbers in most small home routers. IPconfig /all will show where you got your gateway information and who the DHCP server was. These should be the same IP if the router was doing the DHCP and it is also the default gateway.

I thought this was a US ISP phenomenon. Sorry to hear you have the same problems with outsourcing as we do. I work like crazy to avoid having to call any technical support. I guess outsourcing really works. ;)

Problem not solved and I have reason to believe he was talking out his arse but still: Rang up, spent an hour on the phone with this indian guy telling me to try basic and stuff ive done 2000 times over to rectify, then he did a line test and said apparently they are migrating or something with the exchange and "to wait 10 days", if still not back up to speed then call back. TEN. DAYS. OF. THIS. SHIT. NOOOOOOO. FML.

one thing: I suspect its the 3 year old router thats always running too hot to touch, not this migration crap the clueless guy on the end of the phone gave me, if I were to buy a new router - a Buffalo AirStation 125Mbps Wireless-G Router - that says it has a "4-port integrated switch", that means I can run a wired connection in addition to the wireless ones yeah?

Hi Adam,
Test with the wireless off on your router, and nothing else plugged in but your PC with a new ethernet cable.  See if you have good connectivity locally, and not remotely, or even if local connectivity is bad.

Sometimes when people are on your wireless, or someone on your LAN has torrents running it uses all the bandwidth.

Verify your gateway (ipconfig/all) is the right router, connect to the router through a browser like http://ip_of_your_gateway, then turn it off, make sure it's the right router.

Try the ping -t routerip, with disconnecting things above, and try "pathping www.google.com".

If it's good to the router, but bad to google. I believe your ISP is responsible for the router they hand you and everything past that.  But you might want to verify what's setup.  Do you have a cable modem/router that your ISP hands you off?  Or do you have your own router?  If so you might want to plug directly into their equipment.

Will try, done some of those things already tho. It's a router provided by the ISP, called BT Home Hub 10-EC.

BT Homehub haha :)

It's 1 of 2 things as you probably already realise

1. The router/access point is goosed.

or

2. Either low SNR or high utilisation on the internet line.  BT should be able to tell you about any network issues - don't be fobbed off with 'migrating' bollocks or call back in 10 days shit.  Make them give you a remedy number or reference code to the specific outage affecting your line.  If they can't give you one then it's not an outage.  In that case they have to replace the access point - it's really that simple :)

Sounds like low SNR to me.  Migrations don't 'flake' their way from UBR to UBR they get systematically switched over segment by segment.  They're bullshitting you :)
