Cursing , Camping, and the Console

I was online tonight and I noticed there was a lot of cursing on the server tonight. I complained and the console made a remark that i should be playing and not reading the comments. I do not know if the console is more then one person or not. I do not like to see the language  on the server. I have a gutter mouth myself, but i do not like to see it in a game. I curse and give the screen the finger at times. I would like to see a language filter. The players tonight seem to be 10 year olds and show their ignorance. I want a good game of fragging and not cursing or camping. The console made a comment about kicking people with zero kills.  That is  good idea, but I am not the best player so I might get kicked myself. I just wat a good server with good players and no bad language. Taunts are fun. The sad part is that none of the people that curses are not the ones who will be reading this. This is a good server and I enjoy playing here. Oh well I have said my peace. Comments pro or con are welcome.

I have to assume the reason for kicking / disconnecting players with 0 kills isn't based on them being bad players but rather on determining who is idling on the server and not actively playing. I have seen the admins do this when the server is at or near player capacity and players go several maps with no activity. This and all servers have a limited capacity and it has to be managed. My .02 worth

Yes the console is multiple volunteer admins.

Regarding kicking players with zero frags... Typically what happens is we notice someone has been idle for several maps.. So we private message them, saying Are you there?  Are you there? ... And eventually if we don't get a response and if the server is full, we disconnect them.

Regarding swearing... I don't f*****g know what the f**k to tell you about this f*****g g*d d**m issue.

If we have a general policy, it's to err on the side of unrestricted speech.  Several admins will probably mute if they see what looks like racially motivated hate speech, for instance... And also for excessive spamming of course... But mainly people can say whatever they want.  

Also, one thing about language filters, is people who want to curse will just f_u_<_|<_1_n_G spell stuff differently to avoid the filters...

Anyway it's a tough issue.  What do you think?  Thanks for your input.

There never is a perfect solution to a problem, but the use of foul language last night was very bad. Even by my standards. That is why I left. The ones who did it the most seen to be people who do not play the server on a regular basis. There is a good community of players on this server and it is no wonder it is often full. The main reason I do not curse in the game is that you do not know the ages of the players in the game.  I don't want to corupt young minds (Ha Ha) with the use of bad language.  
     I was in a game where someone was using racial slurs and the console at the time said he had been warned before and it was in a policy somewhere. I have not seen any poilcy listed anywhere. If it exists, please point me in in the right direction. I would like to read it. Thanks for the quick reply Console.

Regarding policy... We don't have an official document of any sort.  I did manage to find this though:

(Mainly, individual admins have a lot of discretion, but, in general our focus is on stopping cheaters and hackers and obnoxious spammers.  We aren't trying to be the 24-7 potty mouth police.)

Here is how it works from what I've noticed.  If your kinda good u are able to get away with more.  Also if u have somewhat of a basis for what you say that is a plus.  If your just an out and out bastard that can be respected.  Really as long as u dont harp on racial slurs or dont curse someone directly in mean way for an extended period of time then your pretty much ok.  Also, If your racial slurs are just binds and your a stupid pasty white honkey from the middle of oklahoma that shows his PITiful pictures on his web page and includes that as a bind.  Then, we laugh at them in a greeater more real world sense and anything your loser ass says is tolerable becasue your stupid redneck ass dont know any better.

Well Columbo, I respect your anti-cursing theory. But the fact is, it IS to hard to filter the foul language. If you were to pick up Quake II in a store its rating is teen to mature (due to explicit violence and such) meaning those who usually play have heard and said worse both at home and school.

There are few exceptions, I'm sure there are a few kids playing the game and I I'm sorry they have to hear it. But for the most part, most of the players are teenagers and older so the language thing is gonna be a problem one way or another.

We show our age and our intelligence by the words we use. It also reflects on our up bringing from our parents. I am 43 and probably one of the older gamers here.  I started gaming on my 8088 with 512k ram on a 5 1/4 floppy drive. I have seen and heard a lot in my time. From the replies I learn that some of you have a  good sense of humor.
     I have a good sense of humor too, and from some of the messages in the game I have laughed out load. I wear head phones to keep it quiet at times in and the dead of silence i have laughed out real load. I am sure the neighbors wondered what happened.   In a perfect world, I would not have a complaint. Find me a perfect world please. I never would have started this thread if it haden't really been bad the time I was on Saturday night. I know nothing will change. no chat fiter not  Cursing Cop.
I always laugh when one of the cows kill me. the look on that cows face as a rocket turns me into paste. Let's all have a good time. I use thr Dr Freak skin if you don't have it.  I like the remarks he makes when i die.
"Thank God for respawn."  Let's try to keep it clean. Ok?? Ok. Nuff said.

Ya those damn cow's man I tell ya, been trying to make hamburger outta em forever now   And that one player with the CTF-R skin, she is lucky I don't open a can o whoop ass on here :wink: LOL!  as if I could!  But I do agree that at times the cursing can get out of hand, hmmm, like maybe the PIT crew   I understand it will happen and should happen to a point, but when it gets like them spamming over and over, I vote for Mute, which I know console has done at times.  There is a fine line between having fun and free speech and screwing up the game for everyone else, and PIT normally goes over that line.  my 2 cents

There is a certain irony in all of this; that it is ok to revel in killing yet not in swearing.  Yes, I know, it's all in fun and make believe.  But this game is not predicated on throwing dodge balls at each other, heheh.  Just a thought as I get ready to do some killin, er, ah, dodgeballin.

There have been some interesting replies. Quake a violent game????...... yes it is. BUT it is not a violent as the most Voilent show in history "The Three Stooges."    They do a lot of damage to each other, but they keep the words clean. I know I would be using other choice words if some of the things happened to me. Quake like the Three Stooges isn't real. I like the idea of replacing the rocket launcher with a dodge ball. There is a quake 2 mod that shoots chickens at targets. Scoop i believe. There are many wonderful mods to the game and that is one of the reasons that a game as old as Q2 is still popular.                                                                                
          I have both mission packs, I download new maps and skins. I play music cds instead of the Q2 disk.  Its all these things that Keep the game fresh and interesting. I like to get online after work and get into a good game of q2 and wilh all the weapons i can find..... kill kill kill. It is fun, but its not real. It is an enjoyale expeience. The bad language just get into my skin. It seems you can curse and get away it. you make a racial slur and a red flag goes. up.  I am just glad that it doesn't happen all that often. i filter out most of the trash talk. Fun to be had by all.
     Oh yes camping...... Pad killers get to me too. Snipers are anoying but i CHEER when a better player then I gets the sniper. That reminds me. What ever happened to the greatest camper of them all SLOAN???????

i can never get on arena.xquake its always too full!! but i rather play on a server where i can express myself to an extent than going to a rated G server . I guess its kinda like the movies. More people go See a Rated R movie than a Rated G movie.... well maybe john kerry would go.

Heh! I'd play there 'cept when I log on and touch a key, I signal 11 right outta the game.. Wierd, cause the FAS server and one other one (no idea, long time ago) are the only servers where that has ever happened... Currently running Q2 3.21 under CentOS 3.1.
