but i dont like the idea of Kill the trap...

To clarify, I wasn't suggesting to make it easy to kill the trap.  If you are trapped and someone is trying to kill you, you won't have time to try to kill the trap. You will have to fight and dodge your opponent, just like now.

But I agree with toxic (what!!!!! did hell freeze over??) as far as... "some of the maps are HUGE you can be caught in a trap and spend the next 30 seconds of your life waiting for it to expire without seeing another player".

I have had the same experience, so for a long time I've been wondering if there might be a way to make those situations seem slightly less tedious.  But I'm not talking about making drastic changes to the gameplay.


traps are part of xatrix

To be fair, some of that is my fault. :evilgrin:

Some xatrix maps didn't used to have traps (for example, xdm1, xktdm3, etc.)  I thought traps were such a unique and fun feature, that I added overrides so all maps have at least 1 trap.

Also, I added quad traps.  And I increased the amount of time one can "hold" a trap before throwing, so that it's possible to throw traps long distances.

Beyond that, the xatrix code we run came from a sourceforge project, and the authors there had also made some changes, for example, the ripper gun did not used to cause self-damage.  (They also completely removed the BFG from the source code, which I wish they hadn't.  They should have allowed it to be enabled or disabled via a config setting, not permanently remove it.)

But anyway...

The xatrix on tastyspleen is already modified in some ways from the original.

In my opinion it is probably possible to help the case of "some of the maps are HUGE you can be caught in a trap and spend the next 30 seconds of your life waiting for it to expire without seeing another player", without affecting the regular gameplay where you are trapped and still fighting opponents.

Just a thought... (maybe I'm wrong :))

I actually like pantaloons' idea of combining the two solutions, but I think it would make it easier to get away from traps than having to destroy them completely would..

I have The Reckoning installed, and traps work like traps in xatrix of tastyspleen :raincloud:
I dont understand....
I can make the overrides for mutant...
Why ruin the traps fun?

If you are stuck because a trap you can suicide and continue playing thats the fun of traps are "TRAps"

Having to suicide when you have the mega and 2 sets of RA, just to get away from something that a newbie can pickup and throw down on the ground without aiming, when you aren't even in sight, is NOT fun.

Another possible solution to the poisonous monkey cat's complaint about traps.  Make them ALL quad traps, and he won't have to be held captive by them for more than a second. :nana:

I notice that those who hate traps, typically gravitate towards the rail gun, and don't even use the ripper or phalanx all that much.  So... why not play Vanilla.  I'm sure the 'newbs' aren't as bothersome over there.  :LAME:

I like the Xatrix mod and the community of players who choose to play it regularly.  The added overrides have helped keep me interested too.

Those that see no skill in traps, simply have no imagination.

Leave the traps BE! :)

Annoying trap whoring is the reason that so many regular DM players do not bother with xatrix.
There's nothing quite as boring and stupid as watching someone who cannot move or shoot well, racking up kills on the rest of the people who can, just because he/she was the first person to find where the damn trap spawn is (or is the one who made the override and thus knows before everyone else where to find it and camp).

Bingo.

I've started playing xatrix a little more recently. I don't really mind the traps as long as there aren't LOTS of them on maps. It makes the game really boring. I hate having to sit there half the game waiting for the damn thing to expire. They're probably talking about ME suiciding. I didn't have "kill" bound to a key before I started playing xatrix. It's not quite so bad on the xatrix server. It IS quite so bad on the xrazy server, because there are WAY too many of them. On one map in particular, the orchard one, there are 2 (maybe even 3) traps located around the map. The map is ridiculously small compared to other maps on the xatrix server where are there more than 1 trap. Inevitably, one numb nuts has to make the rounds collecting them all and spams them in a line to cut the map in half.

I'd settle for a nice compromise of reducing the number of collectable traps on a map, making them destroyable by a handful of shots, and also making them able to reduce a players health points while he is caught in its field so that it can go ahead and finish off any players with low enough health before they are able to escape.

I agree with Exterminader......and, traps do bring people to xatrix,  as well as keep them out. The people that dont like them are usually the rail pros. Limiting the number of traps per size of the map would not be bad, as some do have an excess amount. Whoever said there is no skill in throwing a trap hasnt played Termi!!!

umm..when you have quad you glow blue....sooo..hiding in a corner won't do much good unless everyone you play is dangerously colorblind.

I play xatrix plenty. Maybe I don't use a name YOU recognize. You have your little xrazy server where you can make all your overrides and toss in a million traps in hidden places, where you can hide power armor for yourself, stick 3 or 4 red armors on one map, etc. No one is suggesting you change the format of YOUR server. Take a pill, calm down.

provided you have enough room behind you, you can back out of any trap before it expires.
limiting the trap time because of whiners is the same as people selecting maps and leaving out the bfg.
it's usually railers or better players who can't stand playing a map when an equalizer is present.
