I was able to scan both servers with ASE and connect to both of them without trouble.

I didnt see a signature on this article, was this one of your's friar?  :bigshades:

Matrix q2 has a huge learning curve. So lets put it on our radar. Like schedule it for a couple weeks from now. That way we can find all the resources and such and give people a good chance to practice. Last time I played it (circa 2003) It was rough on MP because you obviously can't stop time in a multiplayer game. So it's a lot like KotS with a new weapon set.

I'd definitely be willing to give it a go.  :bananaw00t:

As for now... I was able to connect to your 74.46.11.148:27910. Let's give this wolf game a thorough play test. See how sound the concept is and what needs changed.

A quick guide:

One player is chosen as the wolf and everyone else plays as sheep. The wolf can gain frags by killing anyone, but sheep can only gain frags by killing the wolf. The twist is that there is NOTHING to tell the sheep who the wolf is. They have to figure out who it is by deduction and playing defensively. If a sheep kills another sheep, he receives a huge penalty, so be careful.

Scoring goes like this:
Wolf killing sheep: 1
Sheep Killing wolf: 3
Sheep Killing sheep: -3

When you kill the wolf, you then become the wolf but don't think that the deathmessages will give you a clue. They have been changed to a generic set to prevent from giving away the wolf. Changing skins and traveling in packs is all part of the strategy. Just wait till the paranoia sets in. Mwuhahaha.

NOTE: I think in the future we should add a feature that further punishes sheep that keep shooting other sheep. Like 3 sheep killing sheep in a row will make that player glow and the wolf gets 5 points for killing you or turning yellow and not being allowed to pick anything up for 30 seconds. We'll see how things go. Can't wait to test the concept :D

me & peewee want to test out a new mod we're working on.  It's currently only got a Windows binary
[...]
BTW, if someone knows of a linux distro I can: *run off CD/DVD, *compile C/C++ & *access all my drives then I can start compiling some linux binaries of mods. :)

I definitely would like to encourage the development of new mods for Q2 - so if you would like a shell account on tastyspleen to compile and run your mod(s) you are welcome to it.

Regards,

quadz

If you need help porting your mods to Linux, PM me and I can arrange to exchange email addresses. I can review and test your code and makefiles if you have trouble dealing with GCC's error messages.

thanks quadz & qwazy.  Would make life easier, but I'd also like a distro that fits those needs as I also play with Doom 3 stuff, so it would be helpful anyway.  :D  Running a linux server & all.  :D

BTW, it's 5 to 9, lets' frag!  (good turn out earlier)

So wolf mod.. It definitely needs tweaks/bug fixes but I was so surprised to see that the concept actually worked out. It seemed like too advanced of an idea to make in a 3d shooter, but it really worked.
 :afro:

My favorite kill of the night was on Tokays Towers. QwazzyWabbit was the wolf, friar was sitting on the railgun and I was coming across for the red armor. Friar takes a shot at me so I assume he's the wolf. I blast him with a rocket and jump down to take the ladder. I then look at my console to notice that I had just killed a sheep. Immediately I look up and there is QwazzyWabbit. He watched the whole thing and waited on the top of the ladder to blast me with both barrels of his SSG.

I couldn't stop laughing after that point.

Another kill that was almost as funny. On DM8, I was the wolf and was able to get QwazzyWabbit to follow me to the bottom by the lower box track. Friar jumps down and notices that everyone is in one room and SOMEBODY has to be the the wolf. So he fires a BFG, the laser finishes me off which makes him the wolf, then the blast kills off qwazzy wabbit giving friar an additional point. He had a 50/50 chance and it worked out in his favor LOL

I wrote up a bit about the mod on moddb.com.

it was pretty fun.  More then three people makes the 50/50 chance a little harder.  ;)  If you fired the BFG in a room full of sheep & didn't kill the wolf first, you'd have a nice negative score before you're the wolf.  :D  I got a demo of dsctf.

OK, I thought you didn't have access to a local linux box. I use Fedora Core 8 in a Parallels 4 VM under OS X. Works great for development and I can switch between Windows, OS X and Linux as needed.

I don't have a linux box, just my GSP is linux.   I used to have a linux box but my new machine only has two IDE ports, I've got one drive for Windows & one for DVD, then ~5 IDE drives sitting packed up in the basement I can't use.  :p

A single IDE port can run two drives. You need the two drive ribbon cables and the master/slave jumpers properly set. I am not sure why you are only running two drives on two different IDE ports but it may be for performance reasons on the DVD if you are doing a lot of burning.

If your GSP gives you shell access (as quadz offered) you can probably compile the game there, it's a bit harder to do via ssh and command line interface to gcc and gdb but it can be done. I do all my debugging in the VC++ IDE and write for very clean compiles at highest warning levels, get the Windows version going without bugs and then drop the modified source into the linux box, compile with GCC, handle any new warnings and it's usually good to go. The portability issues disappear for the most part in the game after the first couple of iterations of this process if it's a new project. If you have a local linux box you can take advantage of the newer IDE shells and it's a little less painful. :) I learned to debug on proprietary command line tools back in the day and once I had the VC IDE I never wanted to go back. :)

All of these changes so far are very simple ones. I think that I'll spend some time using the vanilla source as a base and porting the changes over. That should guarantee a clean build.

Sorry, by "ports" I meant a master/slave on the ribbon cable.  Only 1 ide port on the machine.  When I bought the MB I didn't bother looking to see if there was two, I assumed there was, never heard of only one except on store bought machines, so my bad.

The guy behind the EMZ mod for Doom 3 is setting me up with his distro he uses.  Apparently he uses virtual PC with Linux & has no issues with compiling his Doom 3 code.  But it would basicly be peewee e-mailing me code & me trying it out.  :D  But I learned how to debug pretty much with command line in DOS for WWIV BBS.  I should be pulling my hair out again.  :D

Vanilla source is far from clean, unless you are referring to sources that quadz has fixed. The original idSoftware "vanilla" 3.21 sources had all kinds of warnings to mask anything you were doing. There were also a few null-pointer dereferences to crash the game as I recall. In any case, it sounds like you guys are on track so have fun. I look forward to the results.

I mean Quadz'z'z'z'z Vanilla.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
