From the "Sign of the Times" dept.
Canadian women's ice hockey team, the Edmonton Swastikas, from 1916.

OMG....the Edmonton Swastikas. That's amazing. But I guess there was no connotation yet in 1916.

A typical street scene 1913 except for one thing. Those big leaves belong to chestnut trees. A blight which, came from China in the first decade of the 1900s, wiped out virtually all the American chestnut trees in North America. This tree was around 25% of the hardwood forest population. It's estimated the blight killed approximately 3 billion trees. There are less than 100 left. When I was a kid you could buy roasted chestnuts from street vendors. No more.
I like the fact that the bike is left casually out in front of the house. I'll bet it was never stolen.

At the turn of the century all the "easy" lumber had long been harvested and it became necessary to go into the deep bush to obtain prime lumber. There were no roads so the local rivers and lakes became the method of transportation to get to the wood, and transport it back to the mill. The timber was felled in the winter (by saw) so it could be skidded on the snow to the edge of the frozen lake. In spring the logs were floated and herded into large booms and floated down the rivers and lakes to some place where they could be loaded and transported to the mill. Working in the bush to harvest timber was tough and dangerous work.
This shot is from 1915. Note the clear cutting of the hills. If you slipped between these logs you could crush a leg or drown.

Spotted something in this photo. A movie playing at the Eclipse Theater in 1949 with the exciting title "Riders of the Deadline" starring William Boyd. But that poster on the far right looks awfully familiar....

With all the turmoil in the US auto industry, here's a reminder of when the industry was great. The workmanship here is wonderful. And this 1931 chevy is just a utility vehicle, not a passenger vehicle for the showroom. I think seeing these old vehicles photographed new, in their time, does them more justice than a modern photo of the same vehicle, restored.

Also an older 1919 chevrolet. All those curvy parts were hand made.

A few months ago, I got an email from a friend who had some amazing photos of steelworkers in the 1930s building all the highrises in New York, too bad I never saved them, but the photos were really stunning.  There was one photo of a guy having his lunch on a beam 40-50 stories high  :!:
