Like Gator & Crazed, the railgun noise is much, much more audible to me than the bfg.
I find it useful even in ffa. Most people camp with railgun.
I have never made a habit of aiming in the way plastik describes. 99% of the time, I aim at the player with no waiting.
Along with using the default (stock) paks and sound, I also use the last ID compiled executable, version 3.20. (tried all the others, don't like any of'm)
