My hearing aids on the highest setting, using quality headphones i still can't hear the railgun hum in his demo.

I've gone over this myself, and while the BFG does create a hum, the railgun does aswell, but it is  nowhere near audible.  I even did a test having someone else hide in a small map with bfg and rail to see if i can find them simply by sound, I did find them, but not by the sound, just good old fashioned searching.  Even with the map in complete silence, I could not hear the hum coming from the other player, though when I equip them myself, I can hear the hum from both, but it is very suddle.  The only was I can see you being able to hear this hum at all is to have a type of earphones that have HUGE bass in them (they do have them, though their not really safe for your ears) OR hooking up your soundcard with sound out to an amplified bass of about 1000WATTS, which should be able to make the hum more audible.  In my conclusion after extensive testing, I have found this fact of being able to find people hiding in a map due to a low-level hum to be a myth...myth busted mofo! (geekish, but hey, whatcha gonna do right?)  the sounds around the map alone can block out this hum, and if it was even possible to hear it, you would only hear a BFG, and not a railgun.  Only a dog's ears could pick this up, and unless you have your dog helping you out, then your just using that as an excuse to cheat!  other options would be to somehow change these sounds to a louder one, for one or all weapons, and also, there is a way to approximate by the volume of the sound of how far someone is from you correct?  the game already does that, and everyone does it everyday when they hear footsteps slowly fading farther or growing closer.  I doubt there is any of these around, but in theory, you should be able to atleast, in a radius, determine how far someone is away from you, and possibly what direction.  and I can see an operational, undetectable hack, incorporating a .pak aswell, to be able to create a 'sonar' ping type system in a HUD.  though, if its just only the radius you can determine, it will not do much help to a cheater, it will only alert them that there is someone near, and maybe how far, and only work good for certain maps, so don't lose any sleep, and don't flame, because it's just an idea, and that's all, if my imagination has run away with my brain, then forgive them for being in love!

never heard railgun hum either, with speakers or headphones.  played using many diff pc's, setups , etc. never heard it.  heh  bad ears or it doesnt hum?

Don't forget that lots of players use additional #.pak files (they probably even forget they do) and most of those paks contain enhanced/altered sounds. I just checked my own pakfiles and found out I am still using the Q3 version of the railgun hum which I loaded into a custom pak years ago and it's much louder than the original Q2 hum.

If you're familiar with editing pakfiles (I recommend PakScape) and like to test it out to hear the difference, try replacing the original hum with the one I attached here, which is the one from Q3. (The sound, rg_hum.wav can be found in pak0.pak, under sound/weapons )

I use the default paks with default sounds. I can disinctly hear the railgun hum close by when an opponent has it selected. I'm not so sure it can be detected through walls and floors, but I can definately hear it in an opponents hand when they are just around a corner from me or on a ledge above/below me, out of sight. If you can't hear it, you either have a hearing problem, or your soundcard/speakers are not broadcasting it. If you can hear it when YOU have it selected but not when your opponent has it and is close by then I don't know what to tell you.

Just for example..
In the dm map that has the railgun room upstairs...
if there is someone camping at the top of the stairs with rg...
I can hear his rg humm as I approach the bottom of the stairs but before he's in sight.

There are many places you are capable of hearing the opponent rg hum before seeing them, but you have to be close.
I might be neat for some of us to experiment to see if it's acually the sound bouncing around the room or if it can really be heard throung walls/floors. I'd also like to know if the sound is emitted directional or omnidirectional.

Wow, now I know what the hum was, I didnt think a hum sounded like that, so automatically disregarded it as anything important, and just a map sound!

yes, i can only hear the hum when i have it selected, but not from others, even with full volume and bass.  headphones or speakers.  that is from the railgun, BUT i can hear the BFG very easily, it is much louder.  Alot of people don't even notice or pay attention to the hums, but they are there.  personally, i cannot hear the hums coming from any other players railgun while playing, under any setting, and I have very good hearing.  oh well its not that big of a deal though, its use is minimal at best due to the fact that when you do come around any corner, they may be weilding any type of weapon, so it's better to be cautious around any corners, don't follow the corners.  from my experience most players don't really aim at the person half of the time, instead they aim at stationary objects the player will try to pick up or pass over.

Hmmm, gonna have to disagree with you there.

Hearing the railgun humm is extremely useful.  Perhaps not as much in ffa (it helps when there are fewer people playing or it's a closed map), which it sounds like you play - but especially 1vs1 or team.  Like the demo I posted earlier in this thread shows - it alerts you to their presence if they're anywhere near you - through walls and floors (barriers don't mute sounds in q2 - I think - also Art, I'm certain it's omnidirectional because I've never noticed the intensity change when others change their aim around me or when I pass stationary camping teammates)) - and I think is an ingenious addition by ID because the railgun is such a dominant weapon in this game.  I also play with default settings and the rail makes a much more audible buzz than the BFG in my experience. 

As for your sonar HUD plastik... I don't think anything you have in your client or pak or whatever can make someone emit a sound, which is what you'd have to do to hear anything, in my understanding.  If you're talking about a hack that could pick up sounds around you and interpret them for you by telling you direction and distance - that sounds plausible, but not nearly as useful as a wallhack.  You can train your ears to work just as well.

Anyways, instead of discussing the existence of the railgun buzz, maybe we can ask questions to figure out why some people can't hear it and how to fix it.

yeah, i agree with The Crazed about the railgun hum.  It appears(sounds) to me like it is just based on distance, not walls.  i need to go play each dm map, but there are a couple dm maps where the rail is one level above, and when near the cieling of the room below, you can clearly hear the hum of the rail. 

i agree that the rail hum is extremely useful.  When i know my opponent is around the corner with the rail, i choose a weapon where i can inflict extended damage over a period of time, like the chain or rl.  i pop around the corner and back to tease a shot out of him, then pop back around the corner unloading on him bigtime, as i know i have lots of time before he can fire off another shot.  works great.

plastik, i really wonder what pack you are using if you feel the bfg hum is much louder then the railgun's.  the stock bfg hum is very close to inaudible for my hearing, but the railgun is dead simple for me to hear.  i use logiteck headphones, that are kind of cheap, but give exceptional directional sound.

One of the many reasons i still am addicted to quake is its tremendous use of sound in the game.  i play by sound easily as much as i play by sight.  i even aim partially by sound.  i have said it many times before, but i will say it again, a good set of headphones is as good as any stupid wallhack.  i am almost never surprised by wear my opponent is, and feel i know where each one is basically every second of the game.

i use the original sound files, and the bfg hum is far louder than the railgun hum, even by design you could come to this conclusion, due to the fact it is a much higher energy weapon.
