Just curious to console, but who was the banned subnet for?  I understand if you're anti-disclosure in this matter, but if not, would be interesting to know who it was... maybe gives insight on who Wherebear might be?  :>
The strange thing is, my subnet has changed, many times. Comcast assigns IP's from different subnets dynamically and I can change that IP anytime by cloning the MAC address in my router.

I tend to think there is some bug in the anticheat.dll flagging my subnet but that's for another discussion.

Thanks for the unban I played in the RA2 event the time before last, I frequently play on Railz server and I will likely be playing in the RA2 event again tonight, if people show up.

I don't remember which name I used, nor does it matter.
information that could help establish that you are not that individual would be useful.

I used to play on Sporbly's Nostromo RA2 servers over a decade ago and that's pretty much it. I don't remember ever playing on tastyspleen servers specifically, only that the last time I tried to play Quake 2 was sometime around 2010 (that was when I built a PC again). I don't even remember if I got any games in or not..I was only trying to state that my current connection/name has nothing to do with the past.

Recently I tried to connect with the alias, "fragor". If there is some way we can set up a situation where you monitor me in the future, I would like to use the alias, "crater". Thanks.

banned for some reason.

My spidey sense is tingling. It tells me that maybe it's a good reason. But maybe not. I really have no evidence to support this "feeling". Other than the fact that he claims he played here back in 2010 and avoided giving any names by saying that he always changed his name. It's a tiny community and people around here tend to get to know people one way or another even if they do use different names all the time.

It might help to know some of the previous names he's used if he can remember one or two of them. It might also help to know if he moved and where.

I lived in a different city, in a different home with a different ISP back then. I don't remember which name I used, nor does it matter. I was only trying to make it clear that my name/connection doesn't have any association with anything from the past. I don't even know if I connected to a tastyspleen server in 2010, that's just my last recollection of anything relating to Quake 2. The RA2 scene was pretty much dead then and so went my interest in Q2

edit: If it's of any use to anyone, I tried to connect with the alias, "fragor" a second ago for testing purposes. Still couldn't connect.

I'm getting kind of sick of these ridiculous accusatory responses. I wouldn't be here asking for help had I done anything wrong. If there's nothing that can be done, I will move on. I just wanted to play some RA2 again. It has been over a decade since I had any decent RA2 action. Thanks for your time, bye!

BTW, just go with r1q2 for the time being if you want to play.  It'll be much better to be able to play, at least, rather than sitting SOL like you are now.

That was the second thing I tried, neither works.

Wow, really?  That's definitely strange.  Make sure you have the latest r1q2 AND the latest AC downloaded and installed.  If not, then yeah it's probably a software issue with your computer.  You and quadz (console) should get on IRC together and troubleshoot.  Probably be quicker.

I tried console's own files linked in this thread, same results as before. I literally don't run any software besides the Q2 client. I have the most up to date Radeon drivers. And my AV log files are empty and the entire Q2 directory excluded.

http://faderjok.tastyspleen.net/aq2.exe
http://faderjok.tastyspleen.net/aprq2_readme.txt
http://faderjok.tastyspleen.net/anticheat.dll

I tried this and got this,

Sometimes you just can't connect to the anti-cheat server. It might be your computer which in case you'll either need to reboot it, or it could be just that you can't get a physical connection to the server, which will only go away with time (hopefully).

I have tried rebooting several times and opening port 27910 TCP/UDP in my router and nothing.

That screenshot is from Q2PRO, which doesn't support anticheat - all of your testing needs to be done with either R1Q2 or AprQ2.

Incorrect. You can use Q2PRO with anticheat but it must be one of the early versions. I think r178 is the version that Euros use to play on servers that use anticheat, but I have no clue where you will find that version online.  I think you'd be better off asking someone online for that.

Let me clarify then:

The version of Q2PRO depicted in the screenshot doesn't support anticheat, nor does any version (that I know of) support it beyond r364, which is 4 years old now.

That's too bad. I greatly prefer the mouse GUI support, the built in server browser and the easy to settings in the Q2Pro client. It also defaults to the proper resolution OOTB, unlike R1Q2

I only even heard about Q2Pro because of http://q2s.tastyspleen.net/ It's their default client.

I just wanna play some Rocket Arena 2...It has been years since I seen a populated RA2 server. I gave up on it and migrated to Quake Live in spite of the fact their arena game sucks, there were people actually playing.

...tried both Q2Pro and R1GL clients...

I did try both q2 starter packages on the tastyspleen site both with and without anticheat.dll before, neither worked. Both gave the same message, as I stated in the OP..

I tested a clean install of the R1Q2 version of the starter package and anticheat works fine for me on Win7 x64 with MSE installed.

I think it has been determined that my subnet was banned. No clue how or why but I haven't played on a tastyspleen server from this connection, ever.

Yes, that's what R1ch's client says, the one you are using and the one I just tried, again. After it says, "loading anticheat" it says the exact same thing as the Q2Pro client about, "not using anticheat" as you can see in the screenshot in my OP.

Only a couple possibilities occur to me at this point:

- Your antivirus software is ignoring your exception. (Others have indeed reported this in the past; I don't recall which AV software they used.)

- anticheat.dll is being blocked by a software firewall, preventing it from connecting to r1ch's AC server. (I think it uses TCP for this connection.)

Which Q2 names did you used to use?

I reviewed my AV logs and they are empty.
I don't run a SW FW
I haven't had a permanent alias in Q2 since around 2000... edit: I mean I haven't used one name in years, they have all been off the top of my head at the time. I could try to connect with a specific name if it helps.

//edit: Do you want me to PM you? I didn't think my topic had to do with your sticky but now it seems like that's how it works.

I extracted and replaced those files in my Quake 2 folder and tried your client but I got the same message.

Odd. When I join a server, r1q2 prints to the console:

"Loading anticheat, this may take a few moments..."

Is any similar information printed in your case?

Yes, that's what R1ch's client says, the one you are using and the one I just tried, again. After it says, "loading anticheat" it says the exact same thing as the Q2Pro client about, "not using anticheat" as you can see in the screenshot in my OP.

Is there anything else I might be overlooking?

Here are the exact r1q2, r1gl, anticheat versions that I use:

http://tastyspleen.net/~quake2/anticheat/r1q2-b7904-with-anticheat-dll.zip

$ sha1sum r1q2.exe anticheat.dll ref_r1gl.dll dbghelp.dll
48ad2af1369c18f740bec660fa568a838a62aff0 *r1q2.exe
fefef88da8ca2b743e9aac14062aa78b7784e47f *anticheat.dll
71ed378dd7cdac7bc478beaee8fd00840ea09b81 *ref_r1gl.dll
16b5d948ed7843576781dc4f2a391607ac0120a4 *dbghelp.dll

Hope this helps!

It's not clear whether Wherebear is someone new, or might possibly be the player for which the ban was originally created.

I tried using an obscure name thinking the name might be banned, didn't work. Wherebear isn't a name that I use for anything but this forum. I couldn't find anywhere else to ask my question. Registration at the only other place I could find was closed.

If you reread my OP you will see I have already done the most common suggestions to get AC working. Is there anything else I might be overlooking?

Everyone who connects to a server without anticheat loaded gets a message asking them to upgrade to an anticheat client. But none of them get kicked for not having it loaded... unless an admin has forced them to use it. So again I ask,...

Why were you forced to use anticheat in the first place?

An admin has never asked me to use anticheat unless you mean the automated message when connecting. I haven't played since around 2010 and I'm on an entirely different machine and connection. I power cycled my router and received a new IP to be sure, makes no difference.

Most of the servers I tried to connect to asked me to download the .dll file located at antiche.at and I did. See the enclosed screenshot?

it's your anti spyware or antivirus program that is limiting it. it deleted or quarantined your anti-cheat.dll most likely. i have windows 7 64 bit and it plays fine.

No, it didn't. I already reviewed my AV log files. They are empty. And I excluded the entire Q2 directory, as I already stated.

Is there anyway to get this working on Win7 x64 ?

I tried excluding the entire Q2 directory from MSE, redownloading the .dll, tried both Q2Pro and R1GL clients, tried opening TCP/UDP port 27910 in my router, tried toggling a bunch of different settings, tried every available server and nothing.

I know it says 32bit only but I read a bunch of people having it work on 64bit Vista/7/8 on other forums but no good solution as to how.

So I pretty much assume that I can't play Quake 2 on any good servers with AC enabled on Win7 x64 then?

It kills me to think about how many people must have tried to play Quake 2 over the years and eventually gave up because of this. Quake 2 is about my favorite game. Unless I'm missing something really obvious. Anyone?
