Quake / Re: New interview with "Makaveli"
« on: October 02, 2015, 05:06:07 PM »
Thanks for the clarification:
@SgtDick: maybe it was a HEAT server or Mplay, or in Cali on JadeGarden's servers. That's funny he went right to the "1on1 dude" so fast. va-kickr0 aka Camper2Shoes enjoyed doing that on FFAs too.
@bluemeanies: I joined heat.net mid '98, maybe a year later saw him come on a duel server during his tech shift at Heat. Figured if he's famous for throwing a chair, he could probably be a dick (no offense Sgt.!) on a server too.

The "Makaveli" player Sgt. Dick or bluemeanies refers to is NOT the same player D16-Makaveli(Victor Cuadra). Maka never played on a TS server. He was active in Q2 through 2000, possibly 2001. Semi-retired, he was a tech at Sega's HEAT.tv and did some duels. Lately he's dabbled in QL a bit.

1v1 and TDM Demos / Re: naymlis vs ah! q2rdm2 Feb 2009
« on: March 03, 2009, 06:28:23 PM »
-- but you would have to admit there is far too much spamming at openings and lazy play( not cat and mouse just plain non aggressive) and for players of this calibur there should be at least something extraordinary .

maybe I am just spoiled by Damiah's unmatched skill on this map

Bigger picture here: Neither naymlis or pb uploaded their non-official, non-tournament, friendly demos -- Orudie voluntarily cammed and u/l'ed it to youtube, which is GREAT like I previously said: Expand q2's audience with a fast-moving player on an exciting map.
 :bigshades:

Even if you're using the Damiah pov as the benchmark for rdm2 demo appraisal, I still stand by my original analysis and summary. Pretty good considering that Naymlis plays(has played) q2, qw, warsow, cpma q3 and q4 at or near a professional level; whereas Damiah is strictly a q2 player, right? Comparing PLAYERS is not my point here -- comparing demos is, e.g.,

Take Assasin's recent rdm2 match over Careem: Ass is a very active, seasoned, top-tier q2 player...but his pov remarkably resembles Naym's pov...AND coincidentally, ah!'s known for pesky rg/ssg as is Careem. Watch both demos and compare, even though friendly duels widely differ from the official tournament variety.

Lastly hiero, ya I'm spectator -- Gravgon would never send me my forgotten password for my old DS account "GYN"...what's your name there? (btw don't bother with the NA player ad hominems; trolling here with that kind of bait is like fishing with dynamite..zzzz...)

/dev/random / Re: My cd collection
« on: March 02, 2009, 09:06:38 PM »
Messing around with ms-dos and the ever so popular dir command I decided to make a list of all my CD's I've made mp3s of. Still got a few CDs I've been too lazy to convert, but writing in those long ass songnames gets boring :) Anyway, I have folder for each album, and a playlist for each album with songs sorted by songnumber, and when listening to mp3s I always listens to albums. But I prefer using my fancy stereo with fancy cd-player, but when the neighbours are asleep it's better to play loud on your headphones than on the stereo.

dir /b /ad /on > albums.txt

Didn't start to buy CDs till I was 14 years old or so, but can still listen to about every CD to this very day. Well, most :)

1v1 and TDM Demos / Re: naymlis vs ah! q2rdm2 Feb 2009
« on: March 02, 2009, 05:55:50 PM »

and that was the spammiest , sloppiest game of q2rdm2 I have ever watched
:sorry:
 :???:
Just curious hiero, have you seen many skillful rdm2 duels? I beg to differ with your opinion, in terms of context. Naym actually played very conservatively, running a familiar pattern given pb's defensive style. Dealing with each adjective separately:

sloppiest: Naym molded his rdm2 (and much of his q2 dueling) style on Scandie players who traditionally dominate this map. His jumps are crisp, his movement efficient. In fact in this demo, he displays a professional textbook offense[used correctly here since he's previously played Quake for money]on this map. Which leads into the next rebuttal...

spammiest: Chastity comprises two large areas, cornered by YAs. When controlling the map you necessarily spam the YAs from the near-mega position with rox and intermittent slugs -- again, a textbook offensive style when controlling. In fact, I would say Naym fired no more rox than any first-tier regular euro/scandie rdm2 dueler.

 :frustration:
I've repeated this truism before in other demo threads(and very much on display in this pov):

"Your primary goal in a duel is to whore and gather armors, health, weaps and ammo in exactly that order of priority. If your opponent gets in the way of that objective AND you're prepared to frag 'em -- then go for the point; the 'win' will take care of itself."

p.s.  :headbang: Orudie for taking the time&effort getting q2 out to the broader entertain'osphere -- reTRO gamAHZ!

6
 :bigstar:
I was listening to your cast for a bit -- GREAT idea to give TS some "ambience!" Apart from that pun, just awesome music picks, professional station identification clip, and cool that you're speaking between songs sometimes.

Thanks for adding thread to your highlight board -- I've got some demos not posted at demosquad to put up in a day or two.
Well done Jehar.

7
Hmm, well in true demo review style: plus/minus format

+ in ffa maps im a big fan of spacious rail areas contrasting with narrow choke points(e.g., near spawn pad). You got that
+ like where you place teleport and some of the catwalks (creating angle shots)

- what's the purpose of the pool? will become a completely unused area...maybe place a teleporter at pool bottom leading to a closed area full of goodies(armor, etc.)?

- in the big area with boxes, maybe add some rock piles to create more obstructions for peek-a-boo rail battles, since the map design suggests rail fights.

nice contribution

1337 Frag Demos / Re: Dm1 - Air rocket to get jeet off my @$$
« on: February 24, 2009, 09:07:34 PM »
 :P
After the air rock hit him, HIS rock went right at the ground like a dud! Nice and just like the pros do it on dm1 -- scale the YA boxes while simultaneously spinning 180 AND firing predict/cover rox.

9
NEXT Demo:

In a best-of-five or even a best-of-three match tournament, the fight begins long before any fragging: map choice.

Picking and kicking maps can help a player advance to the next round. Take q2duel1 aka Aerowalk aka d1. You know, the map where you need to make that speed jump from the top of stairs to RA continuously...and with spectators, without looking completely noobish when you miss a few times while taking rocket fire and bullets!
 :help:
Aaaanyway there's an accomplished Polish player (and graduate of fellow Pole Scooby's
Scooby's School of Strategy!) named Ib0ginE who literally WORKS this map like a rented mule: whores the RG-RL ledge jump, consistently calm aiming, freaky anticipation...ah hell, here's the demo from this regular season and victim Damiah.

p.s. Ibo will most likely be Purri's next opponent in the playoffs where they've met before.

10
...Gerp knew how to hide and play it safe, but thats why he lost..instead of trying to win he was trying to not lose by a large amount...

Good point. There's using that defensive stalling to break your opponent's rhythm SO YOU CAN THEN ATTACK...and there's just plain 'ole defensive stalling. To be fair, Gerp did go with the high percentage attack by whipping out CG, but Purri's flickrail-on-CG has been unreal lately...so what can you really do against that?
 :exqueezeme:

11

I'll begin posting some "choice" demos from EDL #7. Obviously you can d/l all the match demos you want directly, but for your convenience and above all, hopefully, for your limited entertainment time -- I've selected some demos from the regular season and the on-going playoffs.
 :grinelectric:
Let's start with the most familiar name in q2 duels, Purri (with DaHanG a close second *wink*). He's battling a fellow Scandie, Gerppa, on q2rdm2 in a recent playoff match. Gerppa is a solid teamplayer, not so much a 1v1'er, except that he has a monstrous chain on Edge duels. Lately Gerp's displayed a very patient, somewhat sneaky, evasive approach on rdm2 -- after getting a lead, he's able to avoid the main combat areas while circulating the "back half" of the map -- strategic stalling, imho, arguably different than hiding or camping.
 :frustration:

p.s. *NO spoiler ahead* Watch this demo like a chess match, and pay attention at the 2:57-2:50 mark. We've all seen a player sneak up on an opponent looking the other way, BUT this sequence is hilarious, almost like playing that old game Manhunt and thankfully ends in a satisfyingly gibby frag!

To paraphrase DaHanG's opinion of the world's best rdm2 player Damiah, it's not at all that he's got better aim, it's that he thinks faster and predicts better than anybody else: all skills particularly needed on this map.
  (my prose)

12
 :smiley_abyz:

To those fans of duel demos, the 7th EDL season has begun its playoffs. Damiah and Purri already advanced to the quarterfinals, but there's many other exciting players who dominate certain maps.

The resulting demos will probably appear HERE because of some script problem at demosquad. pm me if you want some of the regular season demos; since demosquad's been down, a few of the regular match specs send me the in-eyes demos. There's been some awesome matches NOT involving Purri, Damiah or Provi!

Ya Sgt. -- and there was that rumor, much later, that D.Karn paid Rigg to join clan Karn, because he got tired of getting trammeled by clans like aT,version, a:v and of course demise. I don't think Rigg5 was in Karn long. Other players like naymlis, acidrainn or randy will know more. funny stuff though.

I guess the same could be said for calling people assholes tho.
If I'm an asshole, the next guy is an asshole and we both agree on our relative assholishness, then neither of us would intend to offend the other by calling one another assholes. We might even mean it in an endearing fashion or we might be using the word because it infers a sense of community or kinship between us, since "buddy/friend/pal" isn't very descriptive and really indicates nothing in common but a liking for one another.
