My cd collection
« on: July 19, 2005, 08:12:24 PM »
Messing around with ms-dos and the ever so popular dir command I decided to make a list of all my CD's I've made mp3s of. Still got a few CDs I've been too lazy to convert, but writing in those long ass songnames gets boring :) Anyway, I have folder for each album, and a playlist for each album with songs sorted by songnumber, and when listening to mp3s I always listens to albums. But I prefer using my fancy stereo with fancy cd-player, but when the neighbours are asleep it's better to play loud on your headphones than on the stereo.

dir /b /ad /on > albums.txt

Didn't start to buy CDs till I was 14 years old or so, but can still listen to about every CD to this very day. Well, most :)

Air - 10000 Hz Legend
Air - Moon Safari
Air - Talkie Walkie
Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Aqua - Aquarium
Ash - Cosmic Debris
Ash - Intergalactic Sonic 7's

Beatles - 1
Beck - Mellow Gold
Beck - Midnite Vultures
Beck - Mutations
Beck - Odelay
Beck - Sea Change
Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Belle & Sebastian - The Boy With the Arab Strap
Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Out Of Season
Beth Orton - Daybreaker
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - B.R.M.C
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Take Them On Your Own
Blur - 13
Blur - The Best Of (Disc 2 - Live At Wembley '99)
Blur - The Best Of (Disc 1)
Bob Dylan - The Best Of Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan - Time Out of Mind
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
Bob Dylan - Live 1975 (Disc 1)

That why you get a ripping program that supports cddb.  All the filenames are looked up and inserted automatically.  The burning program I use supports this, CDBurnerXP Pro, it's free ware and can be found here www.cdburnerxp.se

Ah, cool, gonna check it out. Not as big a problem now though. And I made mp3's of my cd-collection while being offline anyway, so it wouldn't have helped me much back then :D But thanks!

Re: My cd collection
« Reply #7 on: July 20, 2005, 07:02:51 AM »
Most of the U2 cd's came from my brother actually, don't really listen to them that much (bono just gets on my nerves in the long run, and lately they've become more politicians than musicians and that's always bad). The stuff from around Joshua Three -> Achtung Baby is really good, the rest is of varying quality. And the last album really is way overrated.

And old REM > a whole lot of music
Murmur - Reckoning - Fables Of The Reconstruction (one of my alltime favorite albums) = one hell of a winning streak for a new band

I agree the newer stuff is far from being at the same quality (the last 3 albums aren't near the level of their old stuff), allthough New Adventures In Hi-Fi is one of their best albums (leave = one of their best songs ever) but there are some good songs all over. Besides Michael Stipe has one of the best voices in the history. Him being gay doesn't really change the fact. Watched them live a month ago, and they still kick ass.

Sadly there are yet to come any rockbands to take the place of either REM and U2 and Rolling Stones, Oasis had something going on in the to late '90s but lost their heads and lost the touch. Radiohead could been the next best thing, but chose to go their own ways (and think they did the right, Kid A > any other radiohead album). Wilco really could be the greatest band as they have some of the best stuff I've heard in ages, but Jeff Tweedy just isn't the guy who can take that dominant role in the limelight. Strokes aims at a way to narrow audience, the same with most of the alternative bands. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the smaller bands and going to festivals to check them out, but always fun when the big names comes to town and you see people of all ages and genders from any social class showing up at a concert. Metallica is pretty big, but they lack the wide appeal of the bands mentioned.

I have a lots of burned cd's of weird live recordings and just compilations of my dad's record collection. For instance has my own "best of rolling stones" going nonstop in my car. Such a great driving music. But haven't made mp3's out of those.

As for metallica I dunno, the one album I got now I don't listen to much at all. Only at vorspiel when my friends can't stand my other CDs. Heard some other songs here and there and to me it doesn't do that much. And the drumsound is just way overdone, it's almost funny. And btw, buying Jeff Buckley's Grace is one of the best thing I've done, all the chicks dig that CD ;D

Sorta disappointed with the new stuff coming out lately. There are a lot of boring music right now, nothing really can compare to good old Velvet Underground when it comes to noise and sheer honesty about the darker side of life, gansta rap about bitches and killing isn't having the same effect on me as Lou Reed singing about shooting heroin or S&M (Venus in furs!) or whatever. For vorspiel Pixies is as good as any other band, and listening to the nu metal stuff after listening to Doolittle or Bossanova just doesn't cut it for me. And ramones and clash is just as much punk you need. Not saying music today sucks, but it doesn't really add anything more than a few good songs here and there for me. When I'm looking for new music I want to feel like I've discovered a new world, finding artists that influenced that band and check those out. And then it just is a goldmine, you can go on for ages just finding great bands all over.

To me it all started with pink floyd that my older brother got me into. Before I got into Pink Floyd I was just a normal 13 old guy listening to the radio digging whatever was popular. But learning to love Pink Floyd made me realize there are good music from any year between 1965-2005, it's a shame to limit the music you're listening to, to just the newest stuff coming out.

Pink Floyd -> got me into any other music than was played on radio -> Dire Straits/U2/REM/Led Zeppelin/Radiohead
REM -> Velvet Underground/grunge(pearl jam/nirvana/soundgarden/alice in chains)/Uncle Tupelo/Grant Lee Buffalo/Madrugada/Neil Young
Radiohead -> Blur/Sigur Ros/Muse/Coldplay/Wilco/Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips/Stone Roses/Grandaddy/Smashing Pumpkins
Velvet Underground -> Sonic Youth/Television/Ramones/Strokes and all those bands/Motorpsycho/Pixies/Pavement/Lou Reed/Tom Waits/Iggy Pop/The Dandy Warhols/
Sigur Ros -> Godspeed You Black Emperor/Mogwai/Low/Cowboy Junkies/Lambchop/Sparklehorse/Spiritualized/Mazzy Star/Spain
Stone Roses -> My Bloody Valentine/Primal Scream/Oasis/Blur/Rolling Stones/The Clash/Beatles/Suede/Joy Division/Interpol
Neil Young -> Jimi Hendrix/Bob Dylan/Beck/Pearl Jam/Lambchop/Nick Cave/Van Morrison/Nick Drake
Primal Scream -> Massive Attack/Portishead/Air/Death In Vegas/Beth Orton/Beth Gibbons/Goldfrapp

That's just roughly how I've ended up with that cd collection. For instance hearing REM covering a bunch of Velvet Underground songs made me want to check them out, then reading that Sonic Youth were heavliy influenced by Velvet Underground (and Thurston Moore played guitar on one song on REM's Monster) so I checked them out. Lots of good stuff just waiting around the corner.

I believe Metallica has had quite a wide appeal. To place contradictions on that is very debatable and we'll go on and on for ages. Metallica is arguably the greatest metal band ever, challenged by the likes of Machine Head, Black Sabbath (difficult to call metal, but it is) and Anthrax. Anyway, my personal favorite is 'Unforgiven II' - its a classic of note, not that other songs of theres are bad - there are loads of other Metallica songs that are amazing (i.e: 'Nothing Else Matters', 'One').

REM, as much as I dislike them, I think they have alot of talent and I respect that. Infact, any artist who puts their heart and soul into there music, I respect.

Something about me is that I can enjoy ANY music, should I choose listen to whatever for a while, I'll learn to love it. I believe that music is far more than it first appears. Music is an expression of one's personal experience/feelings/etc. and as long as it is so, I call it music.

There's alot of impressive music out there. I was personally impressed by Papa Roach's 'Getting Away with Murder' album - I complete change in sound. As much as I prefer their older sound I think they have created something amazing there. You can call it 'nu-metal' crap but not the new album. Metallica, U2 and Offspring have become very dissapointing recently though.

Well, I agree on that any artist who is putting their own personality and feelings into their music are artists deserving to be given some credit, I'm not gonna go around bash the nu metal or rap or even trance (god how I hate trance though). Of course arguing about music is part of the fun, I used to have and still have tons of discussions with some friends of mine who only listens to trance/house/techno and some who only listen to some countrybands or even metal-heads, while I couldn't stand that stuff. But I do actually see that some of the electronic music has stuff that ordinary rock lacks, and the more classical music approach that some of the artists there have. Some good country music is actually worth listening to as well, just don't push the mainstream country on me. And of course some music is better on the dancefloor and should be valued by their effect in the clubs rather than the "sitting in your sofa with a beer" scenario. I try to be open minded, I can listen to most music without getting a disgusted look on my face. And I can actually enjoy a song here and there as well. But I'm really stubborn too, I hate being told that this and that band is great and that I need to check them out, I want to find my own music. But that's not really always the case though, if someone with similar taste as me says I should check out this band, I usuaully give it a try. But if some metal-fanatic tells me to check out that Motor Head album I'll let it pass. No offense but metal music and me doesn't match too well.

I mean, music is something personal, I don't expect others to enjoy exactly the same music as I do. Nor do I really want to, I remember when I discovered Sigur Ros quite some time before they got "big", even before the release of the Ag

Haha, yeah, my dad has them and I've been borrowing them not too long ago actually. He gave me the Real Gone cause he didn't like it that much and I thought it was great (don't go into that barn!), but he wouldn't give away those ;( So I just wait to see them sale so I can nail them.

And yeah, he's simple, he's dumb, he's the pilot (only the title should tell anyone the song is pure genious) is an amazing song. Sends shivers down my spine in a weird way. Always thought it was about some pilot who was unable to keep the plane from crashing with 2000 men inside ("are you giving in 2000 man?" [not men as I thought]) and I thought that was really sad. But then I re-read the lyrics. Still a great song though.

Trust me and buy Tom Wait's Bone Machine.

Mr. Waits exorcised many of his demons on that album.  I can't even describe it in words.  Just get it.

Rain Dogs is amazing too... not quite as amazing as Bone Machine, but still an utter classic, and perhaps (imho) one of the best albums of the 90's.

"There's nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix/
She has that razor sadness that only gets worse/
With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by/
And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet/
til you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin/
And you spill out over the side to anyone who will listen.../"

Brilliance!   ;D

Yeah, I'll get them, it's just a matter of when ;) I haven't bought any CDs for a couple months now, should go and buy some new ones soon. I just wait for the new CDs to get cheap so I don't get ripped up by the fact that the CD is new, but lately there hasn't been many new CDs I've wanted to buy in the first place. Besides I try to not buy too many CDs at once. About 5 at the time I've found is perfect. Then you can circle through them and not get tired of any, while still not forget how they sound like. If you buy too many you wont get the feel for that many of them. But then again you can go back in your collection and re-discover them when you forgot about them.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
