Hola...!

While I'm not some raging Malmsteen fan, I've always respected his talent for arpeggios.

And I've always kinda liked this song...

I found about a dozen attempts by various individuals on youtube to play it, but here's a guy who... in the immortal words of Taylor from Planet of the Apes, ... Finally, Really Did It.

I can tell that the audio is a crappy overdub for humor... but I somehow doubt that the video is photoshopped at all. Malmsteen is just the type of fucking cheeseball to do such a thing. I guess it could be worse though, instead of playing the "faux-classical/baroque composer" look and sound out like a porn star whore exaggerates an orgasm, he could be perpetrating horrible attempts to stay with the times by adopting an emo dress code and hiring rap-rock singers to do all his shitty lyrics.

Geez... has it been eight months already!!!??

I started working on this song back then, and I only know about half of it so far.

But, I figured I'd get down a recording of the progress so far... (same video, two different codecs)

...next time I'll try recording in stereo so it's easier to distinguish my guitar sound from the album track..

Anyway, it's been fun... if I stick with it, I guess in ANOTHER eight months I should know the whole thing.

I started out using this tab http://tastyspleen.net/~quadz/music/FarBeyondTheSun.png

It's got some mistakes here and there, so lately I've been slowing down (time stretch) parts of the song in SoundForge, and looping a few measures at 1/2 speed until I feel I've worked out where the notes are being played and how they're picked.

The part that I'm working on currently has been particularly tough to figure out as far as guessing how it's probably being picked. (That is, I don't have trouble identifying the notes themselves, once I've slowed it down; but then identifying how/where on the fretboard the notes are being played can be difficult for me.)

For most of the song so far, there has turned out to be a particular way of picking things that is super efficient in terms of no wasted energy or movement in carrying the pick momentum across string to string. So that when I find such a way of playing it, I feel, ah! this must be correct. However in the current part I'm working on, the most efficient way I've found to pick it ends up being easy for the right hand but bizarre enough for the left hand I think there is probably a better way I haven't found yet. (Guess I should check the tab, maybe it'll be reasonable... i've gotten to where I don't trust it much...

)

Nice quadz! :>! Most of malmsteens stuff I find boring, though technically he is truly amazing. I just prefer the style of Satriani / Petrucci. I've always really loved that song though! How about some Gilmour to end the work day?

Heh, I was hoping I was filming at too low a resolution for the clutter to be visible.

That corner of my office accumulates stacks of books and boxes. When I can't tolerate it anymore I clean it up, and the cycle begins anew.
