We have that type of spider here in Florida as well. Doesn't get as big as it's Australian counterpart though, thank god.

Just to point out that a finch is a relatively small bird (the large versions have yellow chests). The largest that this species would be is about 3 to 3 and 1/2 inches.

Meaning that that photo is most likely actual size of the spider. The article describes that the spider specialist has seen this kind of spider as big as a human hand, and that the tropical type grow bigger. So as big as this spider looks, it being larger than a human hand is based on it's leg span. The torso is probably not much larger than a tarantula that most of you have more than likely seen one up close. The abdomen is unusually large, even for other golden orb weavers. However I think that the main reason why this is being called such a huge spider, compared to the large ones that you've already seen, is due to the perception of the photo and the relative size to a traditional bird. If this spider were eating a canary or humming bird you wouldn't get the same effect.
