Lately I'm getting more and more pissed off by noisy bigmouths on the servers, it's the worst on Vanilla. Especially airheads like Chunk of Duke (aka Floating Turd?), everyonefrom{PIT}, kerkoff and Crusty. To name a few...
It's fag this and fag that, and if they somehow manage to win a game you get treated to a nice "fuck all of u" or "gg fags" Bah, please do something about it. I find people who are constantly swearing and acting like jerks just as annoying as cheaters. Probably more.

Two questions:
-Why not give rcon rights to some of the regulars? One guy can't monitor all servers.
-Why not use the chatban that comes with q2admin? What's there to lose, freedom of speech?

It's not that much work to use chatban commands to make a list of banned messages, like anything with *fuck*, *fag* and *nigg* in them. It will discourage the use of those words because it's pretty annoying to see "message banned" after typing a sentence which has one of the banned words in it.
It doesn't always bother me that much but there are some real creeps who seem only interested in offending people to get a reaction and are trying to get on everyone's nerves.

Please just consider it, chatfilters can always be undone.

ChunkOfDuke is DungFish{PIT}.  But wait - you'd rather play on a server with cheaters??  I'd have to disagree there.  I find cheaters way worse than a few pea-brains with diarrhea of the mouth.

There are several server admins; not just me.  But our primary mission is to keep cheaters off the servers.

We do have one word chatbanned.  Banning that one word was an experiment, and in essence, is intended as a hint to whoever uses it that that category of speech isn't appreciated here.

I don't know how to interpret your question, "What's there to lose, freedom of speech?".  Isn't freedom of speech a pretty important concept?

Since these servers are privately owned, I guess we can legally restrict all the speech we want.  But my preference is to restrict as little as possible.  We make an exception with bindspamming, if it looks like it's being done to disrupt the game.

It's trickier than it seems.  I think there are two methods of speaking to consider: binds, and people typing "freehand".  The kind of chatbans you describe would trip up people who are typing messages in freehand.  People who want to spew annoying binds will just try alternate spellings until they get a bind that passes the filters.

To my way of looking at it, these chatbans would punish the wrong people.  I figure if someone takes the time to actually type something unique, "freehand", then they should pretty much be able to say whatever it is they just typed out.  (Unless it's some horrendous form of hate speech or something, which really is not appreciated here.)  But it's the people with the binds, who just have to press a key to repeat some annoying phrase, who I wouldn't necessarily mind making things difficult for.  But unfortunately I don't think chatbans will work for that, because they'll just work around the bans and fix their binds.

One thing I've thought about coding would be sort of a bind-suppressor.  If a player says the same phrase repeatedly, than that particular phrase will be muted for awhile...  Something to that effect: not limiting speech, but limiting repetition. (aka bindspam)

1) Politely mentioning to a player that you don't appreicate unsportsman-like language can make a difference.

2) The server having a banner, talk-back, or chatban does set the tone for players.

I play CounterStrike without votekick, it takes some psychology to get an avid team killer to stop TKing with words, but you can do it.  I don't mean "hey you are hurting my feelings" which is interpreted as "I'm a wuss, pumbel me!"  And, I don't mean "f*** *** ****** *******  ****" which is interpreted as a flame war.

When a player realizes they are embarassing themselves and will gain face by stopping, everyone gets what they want.

Okay I know they can work around it, good for them but still I think that banning some words would make people realize that some language is not appreciated. And believe it or not, most spamming is done on the fly by hitting the up-arrow in the console. {PITY}clan members not included. (I bet they practise their skills in private flamewars and don't understand why there never is a winner.)
And no, I would rather not play on a server with cheaters lol. But I know how to deal with a cheater better than with some loudmouth who is in your face all the time, calling You a fucking stereotypical ethnic ghetto-style individual and accusing you of whatever he can think of. I'd ban these guys, even if it's temporarily. I started this thread because it seems to be getting worse every day.
Remember that sad "BUSH IS SATAN" dude who did the best he could to ruin the 'mymap' command for others? He did that day after day and spammed his political crap till the majority of players was getting really sick of him. And he gets away with it. Freedom of speech is indeed an important concept but so are respect, sportmanship and having fun. (bleh.. sounds like Gandhi)

Yeah well, play some more then and win a few games in a row;) Ask a few guys who usually win game after game (not me;) why they don't say anything at all while they're playing, no smilies no nothing. It's because they get flamed non-stop and have learned it's best to not respond at all and just frag the whiners senseless. Well... When someone spams something obnoxious at the end of a map, I just sort of feel sorry for them and move on.  I don't see how it would benefit me to get bent out of shape - that's prolly just what they want.

But anyway - maybe some sort of "vote mute" would work?

How about an "stfu" command?
