i just installed ubuntu(linux) and i need to find ethernet drivers in order to get online,anyone that can help please pm me thx.

I haven't had any linux installed for many months (last was ubuntu) but I'm pretty sure it detected upon install. If not use the device manager (or whatever it's called) & look through there for y our network card. if it's onboard or cheap it should have it. Linux always has for me!

Realtek PHY RTL8201CL=my onboard ethernet card(usb included) but ubuntu i can access my flash drive plugged into my usb? i can! sup wit that?

I have to install my drivers on Windws before it will even detect the ethernet card...

What version of Ubuntu?

We should check to see what kernel modules are being loaded. You can do that by typing 'lsmod' from a command prompt. (Think it's called Terminal under Utilites.)

By "install your windows drivers", do you mean you're using ndiswrapper? Did ubuntu prompt you to install a disk with windows drivers?

There is also a menu item somewhere (I haven't seen ubuntu in a long time) that will allow you to enable restricted drivers... I can check at the office to see what the prompt is.

While I think of it, why don't we go one step back... what kind of computer is this? There may be a howto floating around for that specific model that will simplify life

just enable it in your kernel..

/usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

go to your Device Drivers, Networking Support. enable the realtek drivers if your computer uses that, i would set it as built-in. kinda useless to set it as a module.

oh and one more thing.. if you're going to manually configure your kernel, you need to know everything about your computer.. i think an LSMOD will work to find all your modules and if you do LSPCI, it should show you all the pci elements you have in your computer as well as SATA connections, etc. only do this if you know how to build a kernel.. if you let ubuntu build your kernel then... good luck. i'm not a ubuntu user.

like said above, RTFM. It tells you how to do pretty much everything. Print them out.

You could try google. I'm sure you're not the first person to have problems with that chipset. (I know you're not, in fact)
You could try the ubuntu forums. They're better equipped to help you. But don't expect a warm welcome if you throw a similar tantrum there.

To be honest... the same applies to Windows, and it takes far, far less effort with that to accomplish the same level of damage as a 'rooted' NIX system.

I personally think Ubuntu is as user friendly as it comes. Picking on a new user because they are having problems with an oddball, problematic NIC is ignorant and counterproductive.

Hope you don't consider yourself a linux advocate.
