Looking to get an education.
« on: August 21, 2008, 07:00:49 PM »
Been wanting to go back to school.

I would like to be in the position of technical consulting for businesses looking to utilise new technologies.

What areas are good to look into? Sys Admins, Tech Engineering, Communications? I'm stumped. I'd like to obtain all those areas but I don't want to get lost following one specific trail.

What are your fields of work in this area and is there any pointers you can give for someone who's starting a little behind?

Thanks
Mark.

I've been told once that if you have a business degree, a CS degree, and customer service management experience, you'll be top of the resume list for this kind of position. As far as starting a home business in this field, I've got no clue.

I've been in an all in one IT position before that touched lightly into managing and acquiring new equipment. It's more of an analytical business situation of balancing budgets and cost comparison than it is being tech savvy

Thanks.

I've always been able to talk to the tech guys that visit and maintain our systems here at work. Most of them ask why I haven't ventured into it myself. I haven't been able to provide an answer and want to be able to now.

I've always considered myself computer savvy... so I didn't consider BS in computers. See I'm a very lazy person and my goals in life have always been met by doing as little as possible to succeed so I decided to go with the Associates in computer science at my local college. Through my experience at least in the work world of computers you can get away with that as long as you have experience to back yourself up. I got my first job with my AS as a assistant to a sole Sys Admin at a small company. I was the support guy... involved basic troubleshooting of workstations, printers, shit like that. Eventually as the Sys Admin got to know me and knowledge he started delegating a lot of his tasks onto me that had nothing to do with my job description. Basically this guy became my mentor for the next two years and it got to the point I could do everything he did there as a sys admin. I learned more in that two years then I EVER learned in my two years spent at college. That's what most employers realize and that's why experience under your belt in IT for the most part holds more weight then an expensive piece of paper.

So at this time I've been working at a larger company for the last two years as the system administrator. I've built a data center, configured two cisco routers, built and maintain a windows network involving AD, exchange, iis hosting... I mean the list goes on and on, I do it all and by myself. I for the most part am my own boss. I don't have a IT 'manager', my boss is the owner of the company. I couldn't ask for a better job (of course I could ask for better pay) for what I want to do in life and I'm only 25... accomplished it all on a local college AS... Goes to show you what alcoholics can accomplish in life. ;)

I apologize for off topic posting earlier

on topic ( although I could be way off base here)--

The only things I have ever excelled at were things that I knew exactly what I was endeavoring to do.  Speaking only about myself -- if I had to ask a question as you did then I would tell myself that I didn't really know what I was truly targeting to be.   Therefore my advice would be to find out -- find that specific position( or what is there currently) and talk to those people -- find out what it is about and what you have to do to get there.  You seem to imply that the position is something of a cutting-edge/ rapidly changing vocation indicitive of what the current business environment and technology is; which is the hardest thing to nail down ( how do you train for the future with today's tools) .

I can tell you are a very capable, intelligent person -- you could do the job when you get there -- and the key to that is to get an "in" to the position ( you have to know someone -- or get to know someone ) .

gotta do what you like... if you like technical writing, maybe plan for that, because there's so many different types of jobs in IT.

like I would hate do be a programmer (I would be a pretty bad one at the moment but i'm sure I could do it ), but other people would only want to program, and they would love it.

I like networking voice and data systems, either way I think an AS in Information Systems or something like that could give you a feel for what you like or don't like, then you can learn/do whatever on your own and through other resources.  At the end of a degree like that, I think you see your skills really have improved, and you know where to look to improve your work.

that said i'd stay away from the IT

If your aim is to make money, you don't want to do what all the others are doing. In other words, ignore things like .Net, or VB or PHP.  Look in to VMS, JCL, COBOL, FORTRAN... These are all things that still need to be maintained or ported, but where the skilled labour is diminishing at an alarming rate.

Applied Network Administration and Design

and

Computer Systems and Network Fundamentals (CSNF)

These are the types of programms I am looking at.
