Heyo guys, I'm originally a Quake 3 player right...and using the Quake 2 rail is so much harder
Anyways..was playing some games and was practicing with the rail, note I have about 30-50 ping on the TS servers and yet I couldnt hit a thing..So, went back to my beloved Quake 3 and joined a european server pinging about 130ish..Pulled out the rail, and was hitting about every single rail...now what the hell is up with that?? I can hit rails better in Quake 3 with 130 ping, while I cant hit a thing in Quake 2? btw, if it matters im using stock Quake 2, no paks or anything. Now to all you pro railers, are you using paks or anything? Would it help me? ~ b 0 n Z a 1

Differences in ping and maybe some differences in lagging hitboxes. To me, even on LAN, I need to aim Q3 rails behind the person slightly.

err, well when I'm playing quake 2 i have about..30-50 ping..was playing quake 3 with 130 ping and was railing better than with a 30 ping..odd...

Maybe i would rail better with paks? In quake 3 I'm using the CPMA mod, bright green tank jr :-o..quake 2 i use default models although i have it very bright so visibility is not the problem, im hitting the player dead on and I'm missing! Whats up with that!?

It's been a long time since I played Q3, but I remember the railing was much easier than Q2. Don't know if it was hitbox size or what, but what would normaly be a close miss in Q2 registered as a hit in Q3.

try a lower sensitivity to make your aim a bit more consistent and lead your opponent a bit to counteract the slight delay when it fires.
other than that, practiceÂ
you might also try using a newer client if you're using regular q2 v 3.20..

iv just started playing q3 freeze railz and id have to say its made me better , i do awsome in q2 and i sometimes win at q3 freeze railz the only diff i noticed is that its slower but i keep my mouse speed to the q3 speeds and its worked ( q2 is slower so u really have to slow ur aim down with nuff practice u should be good)

try using r1q2 client, get some bright skins, get your quake2 to a point where it runs as smooth as possible, get a new mouse if you think you need one, figure out a sensitivity that's right for you, play some railz and practice.

I remember talking to some guys at a q2 LAN some years ago and they were discussing how q2 has a .2 second delay in rail as standard. Even with a 2 ping. Also, if you'll notice, at least on my q2, the crosshair is slightly above where the ammo will hit when you're up close.

the position and size of your cross hair is most likely dictated by the pak you're using.

the hand setting seems to change where the shot originates from as well.
With a perfectly centered crosshair image and the hand set to centered (no gun) the rail travels about as close to straight as it will get from the center of your character to the position that the crosshair points at.
(you almost can't even see the trail)
if you have the gun showing it seems to travel diagonally through the position of the crosshair from whichever side the gun model is displayed.
