Wow...one response. I figured I'd get a lot of discussion around Bonham, Moon, Peart and a host of many great rock drummers.
But nuttin. Unlike the posts on guitarists and bassists this one is curiously apathetic.

I'm a big fan of Peart, being a) Canadian (and having spent a fair amount of time at Port Dalhousie (Lakeside Park) and b) having seen him live 3 times. I tend to think of him as more of a percussionist though, based on his work in the 80s.

As far as Buddy Rich is concerned, I think I prefer this as an example of his brilliance

Nah, he has pretty fast rolls, but overall, he's not the fastest I've ear heard. I believe I posted a clip once of Tim "The Missile" Yeung of Hate Eternal winning some kind of fastest double bass pedal competition. As far as speed goes, death metal has some of the best. These days, the only way to gain any recognition in that realm is play faster than everyone else. An awful lot of them are FAST, but they aren't particularly talented and versatile. They can play fast, but they can't keep a decent time at slower speeds and their vocabulary for chops is very limited.

I'd like to point out how crappy of a drummer Lars Ulrich is. I've recently heard some live Metallica recordings. He can't keep a steady time for shit! But surprisingly, even though he changes the bpm's slightly (even between measures when the rhythm SHOULDN'T change at all!), the rest of the band seems to stay right with him.

Igor Cavalera (Sepultura)

Those are my favorites that I can think of off the top of my head. Keith Moon would probably be there too if it weren't for the fact they always seemed to use horrible mic techniques. There was usually never enough tonal contrast between the different toms. Neil Peart is an awesome drummer, but I'm not a huge Rush fan, so....

Gene Hoglan is a relatively little known drummer, which is really a shame, he's damn good. All you have to do is listen to any song from Death's album Symbolic to tell. Death began in the early days of death metal as your typical death metal genre band. Over time, Chuck Shuldiner evolved his music into more of a progressive sound with odd time signatures and tempo changes. All of the drummers he ever used on the later albums had to be very advanced in skill to fit the music well. Gene Hoglan was exceptional for the way he kept the odd timings with difficult, interesting, and intricate patterns that bounced between the bass, snare, and toms with expert precision. He also used tons of different cymbals at the same time. Because of all of the different drums and cymbals he used CONSTANTLY, the sound was HUGE! When listening to his playing, it sounds like he has 8 arms. He's all over the kit! It sounds like track layering tricks on the album, but I saw them live when they touring for that album, I know for a fact that he's the real deal.

Igor Cavalera is another one of my favorites. He always had a bit of a primal tribal sound, which the Sepultura basically patented when they made it the primary focus of the music with the album Roots. Since that album, they've experimented with HUGE percussion ensembles. Every kinda of drum ever invented, he's tried to incorporate it into the sound somehow. With albums like Against, he introduced lots of traditional Japanese drums and sounds into the mix. It sounded like a horrible idea to me on paper, but when I heard it, I was blown away. But even though I like their tribal sound these days, my favorite album will always be Chaos A.D.

Hehe, I tell you what man, the minute someone questions Neil Peart's god status, a die-hard Rush fan is ready to fight to the death bare handed if need be.

well he's definitely an all-time favorite of mine, but its also good to show that you've looked outside what is probably the most successful (best?) rock band of all time.
