Computer issues
« on: July 31, 2008, 08:11:22 AM »
hi, having a bit of trouble with my pc and i'm wondering if yall have possibily diagnose the pos. if it's a hardware issue it couldn't have come at a better time, I have money for once omg.

anyway, it started happening about a week ago, I applied a registry fix to lower my ping in games using lowerping, it did drop my ping definitely I went from around 200ms to 60 (in WoW), all was well and good but I noticed occasionally I would totally lag out completely forcing a computer reset, fuck this one though and system restored. (whether this did anything or not I dont know, ping is higher again but read on). now my computer is being even gayer, alot of things seem extremely slow to load (World of Warcraft client, winamp, are some), taking up to 2 minutes just to load up, and furthermore i've been getting extremely frequent disconnects from the internet on and off, cant be dc'd for more than 10 seconds, but its enough to knock me off whatever im playing. and finally, there are some lockups im getting that completely stop the picture in any game, but I can still hear sound perfectly fine. in any case I have to alt-f4 and reload or restart PC, or my screen screws up to the point where it looks like my video card has just gone off, everything becomes all low-res and crappy. (800x600, 4 bit colour, all the nvidia options are gone)

system:

windows xp pro sp2
amd athlon 3000+ 64
geforce 6800 GS
1gb ocz performance ram
30gb IDE (loool) hard drive

anything else you might need to know just ask :)

i've run ad-aware, AVG and nothing found btw.

I've determined the problem to be World of Warcraft. Uninstall immediately. ;)

Well hmm... interesting registry edit to say the least. Never heard of that one...

Defrag lately? Run a spyware removal tool? How many processes are running and are they all necessary?

Sometimes even just reseating your memory can help, especially in a laptop.

All in all, when Windows gets that sluggish it's normally best to just clean off the pallet. aka reinstall Windows.

fuck cans of air, just get in there with the hoover :P

I haven't defragged in erm, around 3 weeks. I did notice last time I did the drive was getting fucked in the ass with undefraggable stuff. I tend to end all processes I dont need when I start the PC up like adaware update stuff and crap like that, leaving me with around 25 processes at any one time. Ad-aware = spyware removal so yah :P I'll give reseating the memory a shot later, if i'm going to reinstall I may aswell order an up-to-date drive, anyone that knows from awhile back will know I had a 20gb nearly 10 year old IDE drive for a long long time, and this one isnt much younger ;>

I don't mean to jump in your thread adam, but I have a question regarding reinstalling windows.  I got my puter like 5 years ago, with a windows xp cd.  I am ready to reinstall Windows, due to many issues.  When I pop the cd in and begin the reformat process, I get an error.  Can't recall exactly what it states, but basically 'The version of Windows on the CD is older than the one on your puter, so you can't reformat/reinstall' - something along those lines.

I wouldn't think performing updates and such would make the CD no longer valid.  Anyone have any clue what the fix might be?

Thanks.

Unless anyone can bring forward some more suggestions, its about time I got a new drive anyway so i'm gonna purchase one and just re-do the lot. I'll get a SATA one though. thinking about an OEM one, but I read somewhere that this means it's blank and I have to fuck about with it, what exactly would I haff ter do?

well my experience with new HDs is that you usually run an initial formatting on it, off of the cd it comes with.

My seagate ones both came with a utility to check them out initially and then set them up with an NTFS file system.

Best bet is to initially install it as a slave drive while the other one is still functioning and windows is working in some shape or form, and once it's set up and formatted you just swap it out manually with the master HD and start the windows install procedure as if it was on a brand spanking new computer.

If you do it like that, you've got all your shit sitting on another drive that you aren't booting from, and it will all be accessible to transfer over once you finish reinstalling your OS.

lidz, what version of windows is on the cd?

XP home?
XP Pro?
service pack 2?

I'll second the "are you booting your machine from the cd?" question too..

If it's a legit Windows XP cd with no manufactures logo on it (dell, hp) then you shouldn't have trouble using it... before I reinstall I like to 'zero out' my hard drive by using a free program called Kill Disk... performs a low level format that overwrites all data with 0's. Anything that use to exist on the drive is gone.

but yeah to install windows you need load the cd before windows loads.
