pak8.pak trouble!

guys i use purries pak.8 but i dont like the skins on it so i tried d/l derv's brightskins to put into purries pak- now for some reason when i go in the game i still see purries stuff but i dont see derv's brightskins i see reg skins...........iv tried alot of diff stuff to fix this like deleting all the paks cept pak0 , i did notice there are more than one pak0 in my q2 folder! i have a d/l version of quake2 its not the demo so i dont know what is causing the problem the same  pak im using works for one of my friends , im willin to try nething to get those brightskins workin .

they are in pcx format alright im thinkin the game is reading some other pak but i search though explorer and i get nothing else

actually no their not their in diff format have a look http://dervish.tastyspleen.net/files/brightskinpak.zip  d/l it and open it , the files are named diff i think thats why my game cant read it dunno if vista has nething to do with this but maybe u can help me   out xtryf

i ended up d/l the brightskins of elysium and that worked!!! but i need to figure out how to use the good ones some dude posted how but i need it simplified... remember that post xtryfe

(adam, just add  gl_replacetga 1 and aprq2  will use the png files)

Perhaps you're not familiar with how the pak files function with the game. Pak0 is the original game files. Pak1 contains the 3.21 updates like all the deathmatch maps (q2dm1-q2dm8). Pak2 is also part of the 3.21 update, it contains a couple of model files for weapons I believe. Any pak file higher than pak2 is going to be something added by the player. When the game loads, it searches through the highest numbered pak file first. It searches for the necessary files to run in the game. The highest number you can use for a pak is 9. It will FIRST look in pak9, if the file is not in pak9, it will look in the next highest numbered pak. For example, if you have crosshair 1 in pak8, it will use that file to overwrite the crosshair 1 that is contained in pak0. You've probably just got the paks named wrong or something. If you want to keep all of the items from pak8, but only add brightskins, then you'd need to have ONLY the brightskins for all of the stock player skins in a pak named pak9. Then it will overwrite all the skins contained the /players/male, /players/female, and /players/cyborg folders that are in any other paks. I dunno if I described it well enough, it sounds kind of complicated, but it's really not. Maybe this'll help. If not, holler, I'm sure I can help you straighten it out.

Just edit the pak file itself. I downloaded Purri's pak a while ago and the only things I kept were the rail and grenade sounds, and a few messages on ammo status. Just use any Pak File editor and delete the items you don't want (may be called "nodes"). You can also inserts other items from other paks the same way. Pretty easy, really.

png and tga files will always supersede pcx files in advanced engines
thats what i wanted to know, but i guess thats not the case

elysium knows why its not working i did tons and tons of research until i came accross this link witch http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=1610.0

basically my q2 does not read pgn images!!!!! so i d/l the ones elysium made in pcx format but since its the stock palette colors the skins pritty much almost look stock!!!!!!

if you keep reading from ppl who post on that link u come accross lemonzest post who might know how to fix this problem im having that my q2 dosent read pgn files except that he dosent

explain it in newb terms so i can understand he told adam this (adam, just add  gl_replacetga 1 and aprq2  will use the png files)

can anyone simplify that command for me step by step so my q2 can read png files?????????

i did try r1gl and it read the png files hehe but i dont use nor like r1gl cuz it takes off textures and a number of other things that i use in my paks. so what ill do is look for all the pcx brightskins i can find , already found some in the namlys pak and the color does stand out real nice
