Finally got a graphics card

hopefully this will be the answer to my troubleshooting.  can't wait to start playing some q2 again. what you guys think of this deal?

great price for that card.  I remember when it was $500, and that was a little over a year ago.    but it's a nvidia, don't expect your problems to go away.

That card was never $500.

Nvidia released the 8800 GT cards near the end of the 8 series. It was a hit since it was pretty decent card for a low price. I believe when that card was released it was around $250 but that may of been the 512 MB version so this 256 MB could of been even cheaper.

All in all good deal. My only gripe I would have with it is that it's not EVGA and it doesn't look very pretty. Compared to say... this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130318

Oh and I don't experience problems with Nvidia cards... perhaps you should learn to properly install drivers Friar.

nvidia broke lots of old games with driver updates back in the 6xxx series.    I even talked to a rep about it & it was a "don't worry, if it's aproblem it WILL be fixed".  People still report problems with old games 3 years later.  :/  (anything pre-DX8 is pretty much broken).  Q2 works (of course) because it's OGL/software.

i think your thinkin about ATI there friar they always have shitty drivers

on the other hand, i do agree with the fact that it broke some old games
i havent been able to play the old NWN because of it

honestly, I've never had any issues with my ATI's.  Ever.  Period.  I got my parents an nvidia card a while back, they had issues with it.  A client of mine has embedded nvidia in her laptop, issues.   Intel+Nvidia seems to have issues with some video editing apps.  :/

Meh. Never had an issue myself nor has any of my friends I've suggested and installed Nvidia cards for.

As long as I completely removed the drivers from the previous gfx card prior to installation, the nvidia cards I've used have been pretty reliable.

I've always stuck with a company like PNY, and had no problems.
(used a geforce 4 mx440, a fx5200, and a 7600gs which I have now)

that's a nice 8800 for the dough, but I agree with jager on only getting a high end card from a company you've used before or that has a broad segment of the market. (usually this can imply that they're reliable, and that they don't fuck their customers around too much)

BFG tech, EVGA and PNY all seem to make reasonably solid geforce cards.
