Wanted, Quake 2 server admins

Hi Guys.
My name is Bob and I have been playing Quake2 since year dot .
I have a top end machine that I wish to use as a q2 DM server & possibly a CTF server on the same machine. The problem is I don’t know how to admin q2 and I’m knocking on a bit in age which dont help when you cant retain as good as when you were much younger. (57) lol.. I’m looking for an experienced server admin that can have full control over my machine and really do as they please with it as long as the end result is Quake2. I’m not looking for someone to just set up the server but someone who will keep it running and promote the server as far a field as poss. I live in South Wales, UK and there are not many..if any, servers in my area so I wish to be able to draw as many local peeps as poss.
There would be no running costs to the admin so in effect they would have their own personal server for free.
I was wondering if you or anyone you can recommend, that would be able & want to do the job.?? Or even let me know where I can post the vacancy other than on this forum.
Maybe the Quake 2 admin can use this server for the benifit of its members.
Looking forward to your reply,
Many thanks in advance,
Bob.

running the server is really really easy. it's basically a setup & let go on it's own kind of thing. But you can give control to people you want via a rcon password so that can do things like change maps, gametypes, kick players, etc.

Whatever you do doc, be sure the person you let handle your server is of an adult mind and not some kid with a propensity for porn or warez. Make sure you check your logs and files from time to time, (i.e., DAILY) until you are reasonably confident you are dealing with a straight shooter. Otherwise you might find yourself trying to convince a magistrate that the stuff the police found on your computer for sharing and distribution was not put there by you.
Running a Q2 server is not very difficult and I would encourage you to do it yourself and look at it as a learning opportunity. Promotion is simple, have a decent server and list it on a few web sites and list it here, on R1ch's server and on gametracker.com and a few other places and your server will thrive.
good luck
P.S. I'm 53, so there is hope.

Hi Bob,
A Welsh server would be great if you could populate it. Just a couple of things though - I see you are an ntl customer - If you are going to use your residential broadband service for this server you must realise that you'll be on a dynamic IP address (ie your IP address can change). Secondly, even if you are on the colossal 20mb service your actual upload speed is a small fraction of that, 768 kilobits. I'm no expert but I'm not sure the upload would have enough bandwidth to run a high performance server.
Good luck.

Hi Toxic.
Yes mate, a WELSH server would be a good addition to my area, at the moment most of us Welsh players are playing on Fusters servers only because of the ping factor. I'm sure I could get a server well populated if I advertised it well.
Thanks for the info regarding NTL...yes I am with NTL receiving 10 megs but in the process of upgrading to 20megs.
Can you go a bit further in depth as to what would be the best setup (connection) for Q2 servers with the ability of the server running with no effort with say 15 players. Going back 10 yrs ago I used to play on a server that had half a meg pipe to the outside world and 15 of us used to play with no problems....remember the dial up connections...lol..lol how the world is changing and shrinking.
I know the game and maps inside out but to be able to setup and run a server is way beyond my dreams, Its easy when you know how....but i dont know how...lol..lol. One thing I can do and thats do a basic config
QuazyWabbit
Thanks for the tips regarding where to populate...I will also take into consideration your advise regarding letting an idiot run the server. The server will have nothing on it except windows & quake so it wont be difficult to keep an eye on who's running it.
Happy Friar.

"running the server is really really easy" It sure is when you know how...lol..lol its something I should have learned when I first started to play over 10 yrs ago, but never got round too. My problem is not setting up the server but all the mods that go with it, mod for this...mod for that It would just do my head in trying to figure it all out.
I'm just hoping I can find the right guys who want to do some admin but dont have the server to do it with.
I'm sure glad I found this forum, it makes good reading with all issues regarding Quake....keep the good work going "Admin" your doing such a good job here maybe you can run a server for me too....lol
Thank you all for your advise, it is appreciated.
Bob.

A while back I experimented with setting up a server and I believe it was pretty stable when I tested it with gator and some other BTF guys (though their ping was horrendous, but that was because of USA->UK
). My upload is 512 and it handled it fine so it should be all gravy.

While the upload may be adequate, cable/DSL servers often have higher pings due to the use of an analog modem and the latencies of the encoding schemes. A dynamic IP is also a big setback as it means players will not be able to add your IP to their favorites and anticheat does not work well with dynamic IP servers either. Not to mention any time you download a file or even visit a website with a few large images, the game server will lag
.

Thanks guys for your help.
R1ch,
Can you let me know what the best setup (connection) would be for a server where I would be able to keep a static ip addy.?? The server would be a dedicated server in the way that I will not be using the machine to do anything else other than Quake2, running 24hrs a day. How do all the other servers keep their I.P addys ?? Whatever it takes I will probably do, unless it was way too expensive.
This the part where I need an experienced admin to help & guide me.
Bob.

I use
Escaped Turkey
. It's $10 a month for up to a 32 player server. Runs on a linux server so if the mod doesn't support linux you can't use it. That's how I run my servers (if you use them fell free to use me as a referral!) I then use my domain host (godaddy) to setup the forwarding address so people don't have to worry about ip changes. You can do this with a dynamic server @ your house if you wanted.
