Jumping higher than normal

Hello all,

First of all i like the server and im from germany.
i was wondering how a few players can jump so high....
In q2dm8 for example they jump from the bottom of the map(the rocketlauncher pit)easy and fast up to
the grenadelauncher and further up to the chaingun in NO TIME.
When i asked one of them if it is a cheat or hack or what he gave me a NO as an answer.
So what is it? Is it a long forgotten client command? Has it something to do with your framerate?
Or maybe it is a hack! ???

Hey m4$!!! Welcome to the forums!!
What you are talking about is called the 'Double Jump'.
Tapping jump twice quickly by some platforms etc. can propell you high into the air. Furthermore, running and jumping can make you move faster and thus allow you to jump further.

Actually, I know what kind of jump he is refering to, a asked someone the same thing and got a response. It has to do with upping your cl_maxfps to 120, and turning off vsync (I had to turn off the vsync in my vidcard for it to work). I did get the jump after doing these things, however I found the play to be really choppy, so I changed it back. But its good to finally know how it was done. (Thanks Flarez!)

though the framerate of my computer never will be above 120.

I used to have trouble with that jump on dm8.  I could only get it (even with cl_maxfps 120) if I timed 2 strafe jumps perfectly to land it just right.  I do not know exactly why, but now I can simply stand on the floor, push against the box and jump, and I make it right up every time. 

Maybe try q2a that seems to be about the time this started for me, dunno though for sure, so try it yourself and test it out

You need at least 100 fps to do the jump I think (and using cl_maxfps 100). Heard people do it on lower fps as well, but you generally need at least above 90, but then they usually need what tr3y said, to do a 2 jump combo, doing a jump before they hit the crate landing just by it then hitting jump again immediately to get up (almost like speedjumping at the wall).

It's not all crates you can jump up using the fps trick, only the ones located in the negative z plane of the map. So there aren't that many maps where it is used.

Try to hold in the jumpbutton while doing the jumps while pressing forward against the crate, if you can do it right away. Maybe even try to strafe it.

majikslug tried teaching me how to do it with 90... like you said he had to kind of double jump...  i don't recall if he could actually get all the way up or just on the top of one crate though...

needless to say... i could never get it and quit trying pretty quickly

You can do it with 90, just have to bounce once off the ground, then push forward, something like that.  I can do it without much problem, but with 100+ it's just push forward then hit jump and you're on.

Well, as I said you need to do a jump before the jump that launch you straight up, not hard at all, but inconventient compared to the fps jump. It's also possible to do some crate jumps on for instance q2dm6 (by the wall near the shotgun for instance, or window by the railgun). Easiest way is by far to use the cl_maxfps 100 or 120 or whatever works for you. Then if not then work on other ways

Its called a frame jump, and yes you must have at least 100 fps to do it, and since my comp just will not do 100 with the onboard graphics chip I have I couldnt tell you how its done!

I have always had crap hardware like 50-70 fps and have done this jump a few times (like 3 times for hundreds of tires).  The 100 fps is a must for every time , but a little luck helps too - in my case its all luck.

you can  pretty much crawl right up the wall on dm8 with min. 100 fps, cl_maxfps 120 even better. some servers cap fps to 90 which makes that fps jump impossible for me.
