So this idea has been rattling around in my obsessive subconcious about creating a boot menu to load only what I need to play specific games on my PC.

What I would like to see is having an evironment where there are no unneeded programs running so my game executable can use the most out of my PCU, Graphics Card, and RAM.

Does anyone have an Idea? A link that can point me in the right direction?

honestly, I don't think that would help at all. Unless you have programs eating up all the CPU cycles or memory, it won't matter.

unless your machine is older than quake2, i see no real benefit of doing something so extreme

sometimes certain applications will interfere with time sensitivite applications. there are a few ways to fix these issues, on a desktop i'd recommend uninstalling the software that sucks

(R1Q2) win_priority 1 if you have other apps stealing CPU time will set R1Q2 to higher priority. If you have dual core, you should be fine regardless of what's running.

what kind of rig do you have?

Basicly, disable AV. Or, at the very least, disable AV file check-on-access. That's a process sucking machine.

changing the CPU to a core 2 or X2 will greatly increase your performance.

Is a Core Quad more powerful than a Core Duo even in the duo runs at 3.2 and the quad runs at 2.6?

you're not overthinking, it depends on the situation. My Quad Core is 2.3ghz. it's faster then my old X2 4200 @ 2.2ghz. A LOT faster. But lots of my software uses multi-core.

in theory, a 3.2 single core CPU will run LOTS faster then a quad 2.6 if only 1 core is used. But you also get a speed boost because you can have windows use one core while the software uses another instead of all one core/cpu.

generally, quad = better. The Pentium D's weren't good duel cores though. The core 2's & x2's blew them away.

how about unchecking all unnecessary startup services in msconfig?
